Chapter 11 - BENEATH THE OLD HOUSE

The old Cole estate stood forty miles west of Chicago.
Three stories.
Stone exterior.
Broken windows.
Dead gardens.
Adrian had not returned since his father moved away.
Police insisted he stay behind during the initial search.
He refused.
Clara came too.
He tried once to discourage her.
She stared at him.
He stopped trying.
The basement door remained hidden behind oak paneling in Thomas Cole’s former study.
Adrian remembered it from childhood.
His father called it the archive.
Adrian had never been allowed inside.
Investigators opened it.
A staircase descended beneath the foundation.
The smell of dust and damp concrete filled the air.
At the bottom was a steel door.
Behind it, shelves.
Hundreds of boxes.
Financial ledgers.
Videotapes.
Photographs.
Personnel files.
Thomas Cole had documented everything.
Not merely company finances.
People.
Judges.
Executives.
Politicians.
Competitors.
Employees.
Affairs.
Debts.
Addictions.
Secrets.
Leverage.
Clara looked around.
“This wasn’t an archive.”
Daniel, who had joined investigators, answered.
“It was a control room.”
Thomas Cole had built his empire using information.
Not simply business skill.
He collected secrets and used them.
Bellweather was not one criminal operation.
It was a system.
A network designed to compromise people and make them useful.
After Thomas’s death, somebody had continued operating it.
Investigators located a ledger containing initials.
S.C.
M.H.
V.M.
D.V.
M.B.
Rachel’s initials appeared too.
Not as an operative.
As a threat.
Next to R.C. was written:
DISCOVERED FOUNDATION CHANNEL.
CONTAIN.
Adrian stared until the word blurred.
Contain.
His father’s system had marked his wife for containment.
Clara searched Megan’s entries.
M.B. appeared repeatedly.
Then one final entry.
M.B. RETAINED COPIES.
RISK LEVEL CRITICAL.
Clara’s eyes filled.
“They killed her.”
Daniel did not answer.
He did not need to.
Another file contained photographs from the river where Megan’s body was found.
Investigators had possessed some.
Others had never been given to police.
Someone from Bellweather had been present before authorities arrived.
Clara sat on the floor.
Adrian crouched several feet away.
“Do you want me here?”
She looked at him.
Then nodded.
He moved closer.
Not touching.
Just there.
After several minutes, Clara reached for his hand.
Adrian froze.
She held it because she needed something solid.
He did not interpret it as forgiveness.
He simply held on.
Across the room, Olivia noticed.
She said nothing.
The archive contained one final shock.
Thomas Cole’s medical records.
The official cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
But a private memo showed that months before his death he had transferred operational authority for Bellweather to another individual.
The successor’s identity appeared only as a code.
WREN.
Marcus searched.
No direct name.
But there were clues.
WREN had attended Northwestern University.
WREN had legal training.
WREN had personal access to the Cole family.
WREN had overseen the cleanup after Megan’s death.
And WREN had communicated directly with Stephen.
Adrian went through every person he knew.
Nobody fit.
Then Olivia found an old photograph.
Thomas stood at a company holiday party.
Beside him was a young woman.
Adrian recognized her immediately.
Detective Leah Monroe.
The detective investigating them now.
Clara stared.
“No.”
Marcus went still.
Adrian looked at the date.
Seventeen years earlier.
Monroe appeared to be in her early twenties.
He turned the photograph over.
Handwritten caption.
Leah Wren Monroe.
Adrian’s stomach dropped.
Wren was her middle name.
Before anyone could react, the basement door slammed shut above them.
Lights died.
A voice came through the intercom.
Detective Monroe.
May you like
“You should have left the dead buried.”
