Chapter 15 - THE SECOND RECORDING

The plan was dangerous.

That was the first thing every law enforcement officer said.

The second was that it might work.

Elena agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration at sentencing.

No guarantees.

She had participated in financial fraud.

Drugging Arthur.

Evidence manipulation.

Possibly conspiracy.

But Harold was wanted for murder.

Prosecutors wanted him more.

Elena called from a monitored room.

Harold didn't answer.

She left a message.

“Dad.”

Arthur listened from the observation booth.

It was the first time he had heard Elena call Harold that.

“Lucas found Claire's second recording.”

She paused.

“It names you.”

Another pause.

“I have it.”

She ended the call.

Nothing happened for three hours.

Then a text arrived.

WHERE?

Elena replied.

YOU KNOW WHERE SHE SAID GOODBYE.

Arthur frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Elena looked through the glass.

“Claire's old hospice cottage.”

Arthur's chest tightened.

During Claire's final month, before she unexpectedly stabilized enough to return home, the family had rented a small coastal cottage near Rockport.

Claire called it goodbye because she'd believed she would die there.

Arthur hated that Elena knew.

“How?”

“Harold knew everything about Claire's estate planning.”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

The trap was set for the next evening.

Elena would carry a fake recorder.

Federal agents would surround the cottage.

Arthur would not be there.

At least that was the plan.

Then Lucas disappeared from school.

Again.

For eleven minutes.

Eleven minutes that nearly destroyed Arthur.

The new security team locked down the building.

Police searched classrooms.

Arthur drove there like a man possessed.

They found Lucas inside the school auditorium.

Alone.

Safe.

He had received a handwritten note asking him to meet Maria backstage.

Maria had never written it.

Someone had entered the school.

No cameras captured the person clearly.

Lucas held the note.

Arthur stared at the handwriting.

YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHERE YOUR MOTHER LEFT IT.

This wasn't a kidnapping attempt.

It was a message.

Harold knew they were bluffing about the recording.

Or suspected it.

Lucas looked at Arthur.

“What recording?”

Arthur hesitated.

Then told him.

Lucas frowned.

“Mom did leave another one.”

Arthur froze.

“What?”

Lucas looked confused by everyone's reaction.

“She made videos.”

Arthur knelt.

“What videos?”

“For birthdays.”

His chest tightened.

Claire had recorded future messages for Lucas.

Arthur knew about those.

One for age ten.

Thirteen.

Sixteen.

Eighteen.

Stored in a secure archive.

But Lucas continued.

“There was another one.”

“What?”

“The angry one.”

Arthur stared.

“What angry one?”

Lucas thought.

“I saw it by accident.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“How?”

“Elena was looking at Mom's videos.”

Arthur's heart pounded.

“Where?”

“The old tablet.”

“What old tablet?”

Lucas ran to his backpack.

From the bottom, he pulled a scratched blue tablet.

Arthur recognized it.

Claire's.

“I thought it didn't work.”

“I fixed it.”

Of course he had.

Lucas loved electronics.

Arthur almost laughed.

“Show me.”

Lucas opened a hidden folder.

Locked.

He entered a password.

“What password?”

“Mom's birthday.”

The folder opened.

One file.

FOR ARTHUR ONLY.

Arthur's hands began shaking.

The recording dated six days before Claire's death.

He pressed play.

Claire appeared on screen.

Thin.

Head scarf.

Angry.

More alive than Arthur had seen her in his memory for years.

“Arthur.”

She stared into the camera.

“I hope I never have to show you this.”

Arthur sat down.

“I confronted Harold today.”

She continued.

“He admitted Richard used him to hide payments.”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“He also admitted he helped Victor create new shell companies.”

Claire breathed carefully.

“But that isn't why I'm recording.”

Her expression hardened.

“Harold told me I could either change Lucas's trust or risk leaving Lucas without a mother.”

Arthur stopped breathing.

There it was.

A threat.

Claire continued.

“I asked whether he was threatening me.”

Her voice shook.

“He said, ‘I'm warning you what happens to people who make themselves inconvenient.’”

Arthur covered his face.

Lucas held his hand.

Claire looked straight into the camera.

“If something happens to me, do not let Harold touch Lucas's money.”

The video ended.

No murder confession.

But powerful evidence of motive.

Arthur looked at Lucas.

“How long have you had this?”

“I forgot.”

Arthur almost laughed and cried at the same time.

Of course he forgot.

He was eight.

It wasn't his job to solve murder cases.

Arthur hugged him.

“You did good.”

“Am I in trouble for taking Mom's tablet?”

“No.”

“Even though I wasn't supposed to?”

“Especially because you weren't supposed to.”

Daniel immediately copied the video.

Federal agents changed the plan.

Now they had something Harold would genuinely want destroyed.

Elena carried the original tablet.

Or appeared to.

The real one went into evidence.

The cottage sat dark beside the Atlantic.

Wind shook the windows.

Elena waited inside.

Hidden microphones transmitted every breath.

Arthur watched remotely from an operations van miles away.

He hated not being there.

At 9:12 p.m., headlights appeared.

One car.

A man stepped out.

Not Harold.

Michael Wynn's younger brother, Jason.

Agents tensed.

He entered.

Elena stared.

“Where's my father?”

Jason smiled.

“He sent me.”

“He needs to come himself.”

“No.”

Elena held the fake tablet.

“He wants this?”

Jason reached.

She pulled back.

“I talk to Harold.”

Jason's expression hardened.

“You don't make rules anymore.”

Elena stood.

Neither noticed the movement outside.

Then another car appeared.

Black sedan.

Arthur leaned toward the monitor.

A rear door opened.

Harold Wynn stepped out.

Seventy-two years old.

Silver hair.

Camel coat.

He looked like a retired judge arriving for dinner.

Arthur felt rage surge.

The man who had threatened Claire.

Ordered her death.

Manipulated Elena.

Targeted Lucas.

Walked toward the cottage calmly.

Harold entered.

“Elena.”

Her face crumpled.

“Dad.”

He looked at the tablet.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

“Give it to me.”

“Tell me why you killed Claire.”

Arthur stopped breathing.

Harold stared at his daughter.

Then smiled.

“You always were too emotional.”

“Did you?”

“Elena.”

“Did you order Michael to cut her brake line?”

The room was silent.

Arthur leaned toward the speaker.

Harold removed his gloves.

“Claire created problems she didn't understand.”

Arthur clenched his fist.

Elena's voice shook.

“So you killed her?”

Harold sighed.

“I solved Richard's problem.”

That was enough.

Agents moved.

But Harold heard something outside.

He turned.

Jason drew a gun.

Everything exploded.

Agents shouted.

Elena screamed.

A shot shattered the window.

Arthur watched the video feed jerk sideways.

Then go black.

“What's happening?”

No one answered.

“What's happening?”

Radio chatter filled the van.

Shots fired.

Suspect moving.

Officer down.

Arthur stared at the dead monitor.

Then one transmission came through.

“Harold is fleeing toward the cliffs.”

Arthur stood.

Another voice.

“Female witness is down.”

Arthur froze.

“Elena?”

No answer.

The radio crackled.

Then:

“Gunshot wound.”

For the first time since discovering her betrayal, Arthur felt something unexpected.

Fear for her.

Not because she was innocent.

May you like

She wasn't.

But because Elena might die before ever having the chance to face what she had done.
