Chapter 11 - THE HEARING

The courtroom was smaller than Arthur expected.
That made everything worse.
Elena sat twenty feet away wearing navy blue.
No jewelry.
Minimal makeup.
Her attorney had transformed her into the picture of a frightened wife.
Arthur almost admired the strategy.
Almost.
Lucas was not present.
Daniel had insisted.
Maria waited outside with him.
The judge entered.
Elena's lawyer began.
For forty minutes, Arthur listened to himself described as reckless, emotionally unstable, professionally compromised, and responsible for exposing Lucas to “violent corporate retaliation.”
Every statement contained enough truth to be dangerous.
Arthur had kept questionable company records.
His house had burned.
Lucas had been kidnapped.
Millions had vanished from the trust while Arthur was trustee.
Context was optional when fear sounded convincing.
Then Elena testified.
“I love Lucas.”
Arthur stared at her.
“I have raised him since he was four.”
Her voice broke at exactly the right moment.
“I tried to warn Arthur that his obsession with protecting the Vance company was dangerous.”
Arthur almost stood.
Daniel touched his arm.
“Don't.”
Elena continued.
“When I discovered irregularities in the trust, I contacted people I believed could help.”
Her attorney asked.
“Did you steal from Lucas?”
“No.”
“Did you forge Arthur's signature?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Did you arrange Lucas's kidnapping?”
Elena looked horrified.
“No.”
“Did you burn the home?”
“No.”
“Then why does your husband accuse you?”
Elena looked at Arthur.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because he needs someone to blame.”
Arthur understood why Daniel had warned him.
Elena was good.
Very good.
Then her attorney asked.
“Why did you file for emergency custody?”
Elena lowered her voice.
“Because last night Lucas almost died in a fire.”
She wiped her cheek.
“And Arthur still refuses to admit his business has brought danger into our home.”
Arthur felt the words land around the room.
Then Daniel stood.
“Mrs. Vance.”
Elena looked at him.
“Did you know Victor Hale before marrying Arthur?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Several years.”
Arthur watched the judge.
She made a note.
“Did you tell Arthur?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“It wasn't relevant.”
“Victor Hale has a federal fraud conviction.”
“Yes.”
“And you consulted him regarding Lucas's trust?”
“Yes.”
“Without telling Arthur?”
“Yes.”
“Was Victor Hale present at the warehouse where Lucas was held after being kidnapped?”
Elena's attorney objected.
The judge allowed the question.
Elena swallowed.
“I don't know.”
Daniel placed a photograph on the screen.
Victor kneeling in handcuffs.
Elena's expression tightened.
“Does that refresh your memory?”
“I wasn't there.”
“Did you know Victor was Arthur's half brother?”
The courtroom changed.
Elena stared at Daniel.
Arthur hadn't expected the question so soon.
“Answer.”
“I learned later.”
“When?”
“I don't remember.”
“Before your marriage?”
“No.”
Daniel opened another file.
“Police recovered messages between you and Victor from five years ago.”
Elena's attorney stood.
“Authentication has not been established.”
Daniel nodded.
“We have a forensic declaration.”
The judge reviewed it.
Objection overruled.
Daniel read one message.
HE STILL DOESN'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
Arthur stared at Elena.
The message had been sent six months before their wedding.
Daniel asked.
“Who was ‘he’?”
Elena's mouth tightened.
“I don't remember.”
“Arthur?”
“I said I don't remember.”
Daniel displayed another.
HAROLD SAYS MARRIAGE MAKES THE NEXT PART EASIER.
The courtroom went silent.
Arthur couldn't breathe.
Elena's attorney requested a recess.
Denied.
Daniel walked closer.
“Is Harold Wynn your father?”
Elena looked at him.
Then at Arthur.
Finally.
“Yes.”
Arthur had known since Sarah told him.
Hearing Elena admit it still felt like betrayal happening again in real time.
“Did Arthur know?”
“No.”
“Did Lucas know?”
“No.”
“Did you marry Arthur under instructions from Harold?”
“No.”
“What did ‘the next part’ mean?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel returned to the table.
“Nothing further.”
The judge didn't grant Elena custody.
But she didn't fully dismiss the petition either.
She ordered Lucas to remain with Arthur under professional security.
She froze all trust activity.
And she appointed an independent temporary trust monitor.
It was a partial victory.
Arthur felt no relief.
Outside, reporters had already gathered.
Someone leaked the hearing.
Headlines appeared within an hour.
VANCE FAMILY WAR ERUPTS OVER CHILD'S MILLIONS.
CEO'S WIFE CLAIMS HUSBAND ENDANGERED SON.
SECRET HALF BROTHER TIED TO FINANCIAL SCANDAL.
Vance Meridian stock dropped eleven percent before lunch.
Board members called emergency meetings.
Investors demanded Arthur step aside.
He ignored them.
Then his board chair called.
“Arthur, this is larger than your family now.”
“No.”
Arthur watched Lucas through the window of Daniel's office.
“It isn't.”
“If you don't resign temporarily, the board may vote.”
“Then vote.”
“You could lose control.”
“I know.”
“Think about what Richard built.”
Arthur almost laughed.
“I finally am.”
He hung up.
Maria entered.
“Lucas wants you.”
Arthur walked to him.
The boy sat on the floor.
“What happened in court?”
Arthur sat beside him.
“Elena won't be taking you anywhere.”
Lucas relaxed.
“Okay.”
“But there will be security around us.”
“I hate security.”
“I know.”
Lucas looked at him carefully.
“Are you losing the company?”
Arthur hesitated.
“Maybe.”
“Because of me?”
“No.”
“Because of Mom?”
Arthur thought.
“Because adults made choices and hid them.”
Lucas stared at his shoes.
“Can I tell you something?”
“Always.”
“The man who took me said Elena didn't know about the fire.”
Arthur's attention sharpened.
“What?”
“Michael.”
“You know his name?”
“The police showed me pictures.”
Arthur nodded.
“What exactly did he say?”
Lucas thought.
“When we were in the van, the other man asked if Elena knew they took me.”
Arthur held still.
“And Michael said?”
“He said, ‘Elena only knows what Harold wants her to know.’”
Arthur's pulse quickened.
Elena might be guilty of fraud.
Possibly conspiracy.
But she might not control the entire operation.
“What else?”
Lucas swallowed.
“He said Harold was going to make you sick.”
Arthur stared.
“Sick?”
Lucas nodded.
“He said after you got sick, Elena would finally get everything.”
Arthur felt cold.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Arthur.”
He had heard.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Your incapacity clause.”
Arthur remembered.
PHASE TWO BEGINS ONCE A.V. IS DECLARED UNAVAILABLE.
Someone wasn't planning simply to discredit him.
They were planning to incapacitate him.
Maria went pale.
Then said.
“Arthur.”
He turned.
“What?”
“You've been sick.”
He frowned.
“No, I haven't.”
“Yes.”
She looked frightened.
“Headaches.”
Arthur remembered.
“Exhaustion.”
“I work too much.”
“Nausea.”
“Stress.”
“You nearly fainted at breakfast three weeks ago.”
Arthur stopped.
May you like
Maria continued quietly.
“And it always happened after Elena made your coffee.”
