Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM

Franklin Meade denied everything.
He claimed his signature had been forged.
Arthur no longer accepted convenient denials.
Neither did federal investigators.
The board meeting began at nine.
Arthur walked in at 9:07.
Eleven directors stared at him.
Franklin sat near the end.
He looked insulted rather than nervous.
Board chair Margaret Sloan cleared her throat.
“Arthur, this meeting concerns your temporary removal.”
Arthur placed a folder on the table.
“No.”
Margaret frowned.
“No?”
“This meeting concerns all of you.”
Silence.
Arthur looked around the room.
“For six years, people inside this company knew my father's financial records contained fraud.”
Owen's seat was empty.
Arthur continued.
“Some helped hide it.”
Franklin leaned back.
“Careful.”
Arthur looked at him.
“You should be the last person giving me advice.”
Franklin's face tightened.
Arthur connected his laptop to the screen.
A scanned psychiatric report appeared.
ARTHUR VANCE.
Diagnosis: early cognitive decline.
The board murmured.
Arthur turned toward Franklin.
“Your signature.”
Franklin stood.
“Forgery.”
“Federal investigators will decide that.”
Margaret stared at the report.
“What is this?”
Arthur told them.
Drugging.
Fake records.
Trust removal.
Custody strategy.
Corporate control.
By the time he finished, nobody spoke.
Then Arthur showed the payment records.
A consulting company connected to Franklin had received $600,000 from one of Harold's shell corporations.
Franklin's face turned red.
“That was legitimate consulting.”
“For what?”
“Healthcare strategy.”
“Show us the work product.”
Franklin said nothing.
Arthur looked at Margaret.
“You wanted to vote me out because my family scandal threatened the company.”
Margaret remained silent.
Arthur nodded toward Franklin.
“The scandal is the company.”
He placed a resignation letter on the table.
Everyone stared.
Margaret looked stunned.
“What is that?”
“My resignation as CEO.”
Silence.
Franklin almost smiled.
Arthur noticed.
Then continued.
“Effective once an independent management committee is appointed.”
Franklin's smile vanished.
Arthur had no intention of handing the company to Harold's allies.
“I am also requesting a full federal forensic audit of every Vance Meridian transaction going back twenty-five years.”
One director swore under his breath.
Arthur looked at him.
“Problem?”
“This could destroy shareholder value.”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
“You cannot intentionally damage the company.”
“I am intentionally stopping criminal concealment.”
“It is the same thing if the market reacts.”
“No.”
Arthur's voice hardened.
“It isn't.”
He remembered Claire.
Protect Lucas before you protect the company.
Arthur finally understood the sentence completely.
A company wasn't a person.
It didn't cry.
It didn't get kidnapped.
It didn't die in a car with a cut brake line.
People mattered.
Not the name on the building.
The board postponed the vote.
Franklin left early.
Federal agents arrested him in the parking garage.
By noon, the media explosion had become national.
VANCE CEO RESIGNS AMID FRAUD PROBE.
BOARD MEMBER ARRESTED.
MURDER INVESTIGATION CONNECTED TO CORPORATE SCANDAL.
Arthur returned to the hotel.
Lucas saw the headline.
“Did you lose your job?”
Arthur sat beside him.
“I quit.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to fix some things.”
Lucas thought.
“Do we still have money?”
Arthur laughed.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough for pizza.”
Lucas smiled.
“Then we're okay.”
Maria covered a laugh.
Arthur looked at them.
Maybe everything really had become that simple.
Then Elena called from jail.
Arthur almost declined.
Daniel advised him to answer because calls were recorded.
“Elena.”
Her voice sounded different.
Smaller.
“Harold will kill me.”
Arthur didn't respond.
“Arthur, please.”
“You poisoned me.”
“I followed instructions.”
“That isn't a defense.”
“I didn't know how far he would go.”
“You tried to steal Lucas's trust.”
“I thought the money would be returned.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Do you hear yourself?”
“I was trapped.”
“For four years?”
Silence.
Arthur continued.
“Were you sent to meet me?”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt despite everything.
“Did you marry me because Harold told you to?”
“At first, I met you because he asked me to.”
Arthur's jaw tightened.
“That wasn't my question.”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I didn't marry you because he told me to.”
Arthur said nothing.
“I loved you.”
“Don't.”
“I did.”
“You drugged me.”
“Later.”
Arthur almost laughed at the absurdity.
Elena started crying.
“He told me you were going to destroy everything.”
“What?”
“Our family.”
“What family, Elena?”
“Mine.”
There it was.
Not Arthur.
Not Lucas.
Harold.
Victor.
The hidden network.
Blood and resentment disguised as family loyalty.
“What does Harold want?”
“Control.”
“Of Vance Meridian?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he thinks the company should have belonged to Victor.”
Arthur frowned.
“Harold isn't Victor's father.”
“No.”
“But he hated Richard.”
“Why?”
Elena hesitated.
“My mother loved Richard.”
Arthur stared.
The old affair.
Victor's mother was Owen's sister.
Elena's mother was someone else.
So what did she mean?
“Your mother?”
Elena whispered.
“Harold married her after Richard refused to.”
Arthur understood.
Harold had spent decades cleaning Richard's scandals while resenting him personally.
Victor had become useful.
A weapon against the legitimate Vance family.
Elena continued.
“He told me marrying you would put our family where Richard's family had always kept us out.”
Arthur felt sick.
“You were raised to see my life as something stolen from you.”
“Yes.”
“And Lucas?”
Silence.
“Elena.”
“He wasn't supposed to get hurt.”
Arthur stood.
“He was kidnapped.”
“I didn't authorize it.”
“He almost died in a fire.”
“I didn't know.”
“You tried to take his inheritance.”
Her voice cracked.
“I know.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
There would be no redemption hidden inside explanations.
Maybe Elena had been manipulated.
She had still made choices.
“What do you want from me?”
“Protection.”
“Talk to prosecutors.”
“I will.”
Arthur stopped.
“What will you give them?”
“Harold.”
Arthur's attention sharpened.
“You know where he is?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I know how to make him come to me.”
Arthur felt a chill.
“How?”
Elena whispered.
“Tell him Lucas found Claire's second recording.”
Arthur stared.
“We don't have it.”
“No.”
May you like
Elena's voice became almost inaudible.
“But Harold doesn't know that.”
