Chapter 4 - The Emergency Injunction

Russell Crane remained frozen on his feet while the court reporter’s fingers flew across the stenotype machine.
Judge Calder leaned forward, resting both forearms heavily on the mahogany bench.
The room held its breath as the gravity of the situation settled over the attorneys.
"Mr. Crane, does your client dispute the authenticity of the commonwealth filing bearing the official corporate seal?" the judge asked.
Russell frantically leafed through the thick blue binder in front of him.
His hands were visibly shaking as he scanned the incorporation annexes.
Adrian leaned over, his eyes bloodshot with sudden panic.
"Tell him it’s forged, Russell," Adrian whispered frantically under his breath.
"Tell him she signed away her rights during the restructuring five years ago."
Russell paused at a specific page and swallowed audibly.
"Your Honor, we... we do not have immediate evidence of forgery at this precise moment," Russell admitted, his voice cracking slightly.
"However, my client has functioned as the sole chief executive and public guarantor of all corporate debts and municipal bonds for twelve consecutive years."
"Operational management does not confer equitable title, Mr. Crane," Judge Calder countered sharply.
"Particularly when the prenuptial agreement your own office filed explicitly protects pre-marital capital trusts from equitable distribution."
"The irony is not lost on this court."
I reached into my handbag once more and pulled out a second document stamped by the clerk of the court.
"Your Honor," I stated, keeping my voice level and deliberate.
"I have submitted an emergency petition for an ex parte temporary restraining order."
"It enjoins Mr. Hollis from accessing corporate treasury accounts, liquidating lines of credit, or entering company headquarters without an escort."
Adrian shoved his chair back violently, the wooden legs screeching against the floor.
"You cannot lock me out of my own building, Elena!" he bellowed.
"I built that company with my bare hands while you sat in the nursery!"
"Mr. Hollis, sit down or I will hold you in contempt and have you remanded into custody immediately," Judge Calder warned, his eyes flashing with fury.
Adrian dropped back into his seat, his chest heaving under his tailored vest.
"Given the substantial evidence of unilateral asset diversion presented in these preliminary affidavits," the judge continued, "the emergency injunction is granted in full."
"Mr. Hollis is barred from all company financial systems effective twelve noon today."
"Furthermore, temporary physical and legal custody of Samuel and Owen Hollis is awarded exclusively to Mrs. Elena Lane."
May you like
Samuel squeezed my left hand, and Owen leaned his forehead softly against my shoulder.
For the first time in six months, the suffocating terror that had lived in our home began to dissipate.
