Chapter 1 - The Question That Froze the Room

Judge Calder held the yellowed parchment between his weathered fingers.

The courtroom fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.

Across the aisle, Adrian still wore the faint traces of his arrogant smirk.

Beside him, Paige leaned forward, her glossy lips parted in mild curiosity.

Russell Crane adjusted his gold cufflink, completely unaware of the trap closing around them.

The judge slowly looked over the rims of his glasses.

His gaze did not land on me.

It pinned my husband directly to his high-backed leather chair.

"Mr. Hollis," Judge Calder said, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls.

"Could you state for the record the exact legal entity that owns seventy percent of Hollis Transit Systems?"

Adrian’s smirk faltered slightly.

He cleared his throat and adjusted his silk tie.

"Your Honor, Hollis Transit Systems is a public utility corporation formed under my executive leadership twelve years ago."

"I did not ask who formed it, Mr. Hollis," the judge replied, his tone chillingly dry.

"I asked who owns the controlling interest according to the original, unamended certificate of incorporation filed with the State Corporation Commission."

Adrian blinked.

He looked toward Russell, expecting his high-priced lawyer to jump up with an objection.

Russell stood, buttoning his tailored suit jacket.

"Your Honor, if this pertains to marital asset division, the prenuptial agreement explicitly protects my client’s separate corporate equity—"

"Sit down, counselor," Judge Calder said without looking up.

Russell sat down instantly.

The judge turned the document around and laid it flat on the desk.

"The primary holding entity listed here is Lane Logistics Capital Trust."

A quiet murmur rippled through the spectators behind the bar.

Adrian’s face lost every shred of warmth.

The blood visibly drained from his cheeks, leaving behind an ashen, hollow mask.

"And the sole trustee and irrevocable beneficiary of Lane Logistics Capital Trust," Judge Calder continued, reading directly from the notarized seal, "is Elena Vance Lane."

The judge looked straight into Adrian's stunned eyes.

"Mr. Hollis, are you aware that the company you claim as your private empire was capitalized entirely by your wife's trust before your marriage, and that your title as Chief Executive Officer exists strictly at the pleasure of the trust's majority vote?"

The courtroom froze.

Paige’s designer pen slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor.

Neither she nor Adrian moved to pick it up.
