Chapter 14 - The Hammer of Justice

Judge Calder picked up his fountain pen and signed the thick decree lying before him.
He adjusted his robes, sat upright, and looked across the courtroom with supreme authority.
"This court finds overwhelming evidence of intentional parental alienation, psychological coercion, and gross financial misconduct committed by the defendant, Adrian Hollis."
The judge tapped the papers in front of him.
"It is hereby ordered that sole legal and sole physical custody of Samuel Hollis and Owen Hollis is awarded exclusively to their mother, Elena Vance Lane."
"Mr. Hollis shall have no physical contact with the children for a minimum period of twelve months."
"Any future visitation will be strictly contingent upon the completion of a comprehensive psychological evaluation, fifty hours of anger management therapy, and the supervised consent of the custodial parent."
Adrian flinched as though he had been struck with an iron bar.
"Regarding the division of marital property," Judge Calder continued, "the prenuptial agreement drafted and submitted by Mr. Hollis’s counsel is affirmed and enforced in its entirety."
"Under the express terms of paragraph fourteen, all pre-marital trusts, capital foundations, and business entities bearing the Lane family name are confirmed as the sole separate property of Elena Vance Lane."
"Hollis Transit Systems, being capitalized entirely by Lane Logistics Capital Trust, remains under the absolute control of the trustee."
"Furthermore, because Mr. Hollis committed willful marital waste and fraudulent diversion of assets, he is ordered to return thirteen million two hundred thousand dollars to the corporate treasury immediately."
"All personal accounts, luxury vehicles, and real estate acquired using diverted corporate funds are hereby surrendered to the trust to satisfy this judgment."
"Finally, Mr. Hollis is ordered to pay all legal fees, forensic accounting costs, and child support arrears within thirty days."
Judge Calder slammed his gavel onto the wood block with a final, definitive crack.
"Court is adjourned."
Adrian remained frozen in his chair, staring blankly ahead as two armed federal marshals stepped up behind him.
"Mr. Hollis," the senior marshal said, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder.
"You are under arrest pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court for wire fraud, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement."
"Please stand up and place your hands behind your back."
Adrian rose slowly, mechanically, like a hollow shell of a man.
The metal handcuffs clicked around his wrists in plain view of the courtroom gallery.
He turned his head to look at me one last time, his eyes searching for mercy, for pity, for some remnant of the quiet woman who had stood beside him for twelve years.
I looked back at him with steady, calm eyes.
I felt no hatred.

I felt no triumph.
I felt only the profound, peaceful weight of absolute freedom.
