Chapter 9 - Nine O'Clock

At 8:15 the next morning, Miriam filed an emergency application seeking to prevent the disputed patent transfer.
At 8:30, the board received a formal notice describing the apparent conflicts of interest.
At 8:42, Vanessa called me.
I answered with Miriam beside me.
"Claire, what have you done?"
"Good morning, Vanessa."
"You've interfered with a legitimate transaction."
"Then I'm sure you'll welcome an independent review."
She laughed sharply.
"You have no idea how business works."
"Perhaps."
I glanced at the documents.
"But I understand that selling patents valued at more than $190 million for $14 million deserves an explanation."
Silence.
Then Vanessa said, "Daniel told me you were harmless."
I looked out the window.
"He was wrong."
"You think this makes you powerful?"
"No."
I paused.
"My father made me a shareholder."
"Then why did you let Daniel run everything?"
The question struck harder than I expected.
Because I loved him.
Because I trusted him.
Because after losing my father, I couldn't bear the thought of losing my marriage too.
But I wasn't going to explain my grief to the woman who had helped exploit it.
"That's a question I've been asking myself," I said.
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"You should have stayed home."
I ended the call.
At 8:57, Miriam received confirmation that the court had issued a temporary order preserving the disputed assets pending further proceedings.
The transfer did not close.
For the first time, Vanessa's plan had failed publicly.
But Daniel was preparing his own attack.
At noon, an anonymous source leaked allegations that I had improperly withdrawn millions from Whitmore Dynamics.
Business reporters began calling.
Social media filled with speculation.
One headline described me as an "embittered heiress."
Another suggested I was destroying the company over a personal dispute.
I wanted to respond immediately.
Miriam advised restraint.
"Facts first."
The audit team worked through the afternoon.
By evening, they identified the source of the supposed withdrawals.
The transactions were distributions and reimbursements that had been recorded under my name without my authorization.
Several carried the same suspicious signature as the alleged voting agreement.
Daniel had apparently prepared a financial story in which I was the thief.
I sat alone in my father's office after everyone left.
For years, I had believed that avoiding conflict was a form of strength.
I had mistaken patience for wisdom.
And I had confused loyalty with surrender.
My phone vibrated.
A text from Daniel.
We can still fix this.
I stared at the words.
Then another arrived.
Vanessa is not who you think she is.
I almost deleted it.
Instead, I forwarded it to Miriam.
A third message appeared.
She's been using me.
For the first time, Daniel was claiming to be the victim.

I didn't believe him.
But I wanted to know why he was suddenly afraid.
