Chapter 4 - Eighty-Three Percent

Daniel tried to interrupt before the first motion.
"This meeting is ridiculous."
I opened my folder.
"Your objection is recorded."
"You can't just walk in here and take control."
"I didn't walk in and take control, Daniel."
I looked directly at him.
"I came to exercise the control I already had."
One director, Richard Bell, shifted uncomfortably.
He had worked with my father for twenty-three years.
"Claire, perhaps we should handle this privately."
I turned toward him.
"Richard, were you at yesterday's engagement celebration?"
He looked down.
"Yes."
"Did you know Daniel was still married to me?"
Nobody spoke.
I nodded.
"Then I think we've handled enough things privately."
Miriam distributed the audit proposal.
The motion called for an independent forensic review of financial transactions, related-party contracts, executive reimbursements, and major vendor agreements.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"This is a hostile action against management."
"No," I replied.
"It's an oversight action by the board."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You're going to destroy the stock value."
"Then I suggest everyone cooperate."
The directors reviewed the documents.
Miriam explained the legal framework.
My controlling shares gave me substantial voting power, but corporate decisions still had to follow the company's governing documents and applicable law.
I couldn't simply take money from the company's bank accounts.
I couldn't erase other shareholders.
And I couldn't fire everyone because my husband had betrayed me.
But I could demand accountability.
I could replace directors through lawful procedures.
I could revoke delegated voting authority where the trust permitted it.
And I could refuse to support transactions that threatened the company my father built.
The first motion passed.
Five votes to two.
The second motion temporarily restricted extraordinary related-party payments pending review.
It passed unanimously.
The third motion concerned Daniel.
Miriam read the language.
"Pending the outcome of the independent investigation, Daniel Whitmore shall be placed on administrative leave from his executive position, with access to financial systems suspended."
Daniel shot to his feet.
"You cannot be serious."
I remained seated.
"Sit down."
He stared at me.
I had never spoken to him that way.
"Claire, you're humiliating me."
I felt a strange calm.
"Now you know what that feels like."
The vote passed.
Four to three.
Daniel stood motionless.
For the first time in our marriage, he had no immediate answer.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"This isn't over."
I looked at her.
"No."
Then I closed the folder.
"It's just beginning."
As the directors began leaving, Richard Bell approached me.
His face was pale.
"Claire, I need to speak with you."
"Go ahead."
"Not here."
He glanced toward Daniel.
"Your father asked me to keep something."
My heartbeat quickened.
"What?"
Richard swallowed.
"A recording."
"Of whom?"
"Daniel."
May you like
He looked toward the closed conference room door.
"And someone who was supposed to be dead."
