Chapter 12 - The Woman They Underestimated

The press conference took place on a Thursday morning.
Every major business outlet had sent a reporter.
The room was packed.
I stood behind a simple podium.
No expensive jewelry.
No dramatic entrance.
No husband beside me.
Just a navy suit, my father's photograph, and a prepared statement.
"Eight years ago, I inherited a controlling interest in Whitmore Dynamics."
Cameras flashed.
"For most of that time, I delegated management responsibilities to people I trusted."
I paused.
"Recent events have shown that trust was misplaced."
The room became quiet.
"An independent investigation has identified serious financial irregularities and potential conflicts of interest."
I kept my voice steady.
"Those matters are being referred to the appropriate authorities."
A reporter raised her hand.
"Mrs. Whitmore, is this revenge against your husband?"
I looked directly at her.
"No."
"Then why did you act immediately after his engagement announcement?"
"Because that event exposed information that caused me to review arrangements I should have examined years earlier."
Another reporter spoke.
"Are you planning to liquidate your shares?"
"No."
"Are you withdrawing $558 million from the company?"
"No."
I leaned slightly toward the microphone.
"My ownership interest is not a checking account."
Several reporters smiled.
"I intend to protect the company's assets, employees, and long-term future."
A third reporter asked about Vanessa.
"Do you believe Ms. Cole committed fraud?"
"That determination belongs to the evidence and the appropriate legal process."
"Do you still love your husband?"
The room went silent.
I had expected the question.
But hearing it still hurt.
I thought about our wedding.
Our anniversary dinners.
The vacations.
The years I had spent believing we were building a life together.
Then I thought about the engagement ring on Vanessa's finger.
"I loved the man I believed I married."
I paused.
"I am still learning who he actually was."
Nobody spoke.
I continued.
"Today, Whitmore Dynamics is announcing an independent governance review, stronger financial controls, and a commitment to protecting the people who make this company valuable."
I looked toward the employees standing at the back of the room.
"To everyone who has spent years building this business, I want you to hear one thing."
I swallowed.
"You are not responsible for the misconduct of the people above you."
Several employees began crying.
Emily stood near the rear wall.
She nodded at me.
I nodded back.
For the first time since Valentine's Day, I felt something other than anger.
Purpose.
After the press conference, Miriam approached me.
"That went well."
"Good."
She hesitated.
"There's been a development."
My stomach tightened.
"Daniel?"
"No."
"Vanessa?"
Miriam handed me her phone.
An emergency court filing had been submitted.
Vanessa was seeking to block her removal as CEO.
She alleged that the board had acted improperly.
And she claimed to possess evidence that could invalidate my controlling shares.
I stared at the filing.
"On what grounds?"
May you like
Miriam's expression darkened.
"She says your father's final trust amendment was fraudulent."
