Chapter 17 - No More Secrets

Richard’s decision changed the case.

Former employees began contacting investigators.

Some had been afraid of Edmund.

Others had been paid by David.

Several had information about Martin.

A retired accountant provided bank statements.

A former driver remembered suspicious meetings.

A nurse remembered Victoria visiting Caroline days before her death.

Evidence accumulated rapidly.

Martin had nowhere left to hide.

David managed to escape him.

He walked into a police station in Pennsylvania with a broken hand and information about Martin’s safe houses.

“How did you escape?” Grant asked.

David laughed bitterly.

“Martin underestimated how badly I want to stay alive.”

David was transferred under heavy protection.

He confessed everything.

Not for forgiveness.

He knew Richard would never give that.

For survival.

Martin’s locations were raided.

Empty.

Until agents found one room containing photographs of Richard.

Every photograph had been taken after the press conference.

Martin was following him.

Grant insisted Richard relocate.

Richard refused to run indefinitely.

But he did move Maya to a secure school campus temporarily.

Before she left, he told her the truth in age-appropriate terms.

“Victoria did something very wrong.”

“So did other people.”

“They wanted money.”

“And Mommy discovered it.”

Maya listened.

“Did Mommy die because of them?”

Richard paused.

“Yes.”

Maya’s eyes filled.

Richard did not lie.

He held her while she cried.

Afterward Maya whispered, “I hate Victoria.”

Richard understood.

“You’re allowed to be angry.”

“But don’t let what she did decide who you become.”

Maya nodded.

Then asked, “Did Mommy hate her?”

Richard remembered Caroline’s recordings.

“I think Mommy was more afraid for you than angry for herself.”

That night Richard listened to the final unopened recording.

Caroline sounded tired.

“Richard, if we survive this, I want us to leave.”

“Sell the house.”

“Forget the Hale expectations.”

“Give Maya a life where nobody cares about her last name.”

Richard smiled through tears.

Caroline had wanted the same thing Maya asked for.

A new house.

No giant staircase.

A treehouse.

Richard decided he would honor that.

But first Martin had to be stopped.

The break came from Noah.

His adoptive parents contacted authorities.

Noah had remembered receiving anonymous emails months earlier from someone claiming to know his birth mother.

The sender used the name M.Cross.

Agents traced an old recovery address.

It connected to an isolated property in Maine.

Police surrounded it.

Martin was inside.

So was David’s stolen federal identification.

And enough documents to prove dozens of crimes.

But Martin escaped through the woods before agents entered.

For two days teams searched.

Nothing.

On the third night Richard returned from a legal meeting.

His driver opened the rear door.

Richard stepped toward the car.

Then he saw the driver’s face.

Not his driver.

Martin.

Richard moved backward.

Too late.

Martin pressed something against Richard’s side.

“Get in.”

Richard obeyed.

The vehicle moved.

Martin drove alone.

No guards.

No backup.

Nothing left.

“You lost,” Richard said.

Martin smiled.

“You think losing money is losing?”

“You lost Victoria.”

“She was weak.”

“David.”

“A coward.”

“Your accounts.”

“Numbers.”

“Your freedom.”

Martin looked at Richard.

“I never had freedom.”

Richard realized this was not about escape anymore.

Martin wanted one final confrontation.

They drove to a cemetery.

Caroline’s grave.

Martin stopped.

“Get out.”

Richard stepped into the rain.

Martin followed.

For a moment both men stood before Caroline’s headstone.

Martin stared at it.

“I loved her first.”

Richard answered quietly.

“No.”

Martin looked at him.

“You owned her first.”

Martin’s face twisted.

Richard continued.

“That is why she ran.”

Martin raised the gun.

Then a voice came from behind him.

“Drop it.”

Detective Grant.

Martin spun.

Agents emerged from darkness.

Richard understood.

His new driver had triggered a silent distress signal before Martin attacked.

Police had tracked the vehicle.

Martin looked around.

No exit.

He smiled strangely.

Then lowered the weapon.

For the first time in years, Martin Cross surrendered.

But as Grant placed him in handcuffs, Martin looked at Richard and whispered.

May you like

“You still don’t know Caroline’s last secret.”
