Chapter 15 - The Child Before Maya

Richard thought Victoria was lying.
Caroline had never had another child.
Not according to any medical record he had ever seen.
But the necklace contained a tiny memory card.
Martin had copied the files before destroying it.
Digital investigators recovered the backup from his cloud account.
The first photograph showed Caroline holding a newborn boy.
The date was thirteen years earlier.
During her marriage to Martin.
Richard sat down.
Caroline had been a mother before Maya.
The baby’s name was Nicholas.
He was born prematurely.
Hospital records said he died after four days.
But Caroline’s private file contained another story.
Nicholas survived.
Caroline had discovered Martin was involved in dangerous financial crimes.
She feared he would use the baby to control her.
With help from a physician, she arranged a private adoption.
Martin was told the child died.
Richard listened to Caroline’s recording.
“Nicholas is alive.”
“I did the cruelest thing I have ever done to save him.”
“I let Martin believe our son was dead.”
“I signed the papers.”
“I watched another family take him.”
“And every day since then, I have wondered whether I had the right.”
Richard understood why Martin had cried.
He had spent thirteen years believing his son was dead.
Now he knew Caroline had hidden him.
And somewhere in America was a thirteen-year-old boy Martin desperately wanted to find.
Richard felt another kind of fear.
Martin’s obsession was no longer about money.
It was personal.
Federal investigators located the sealed adoption record.
Nicholas had been renamed Noah Bennett.
He lived with adoptive parents in Vermont.
Richard refused to learn the address.
The fewer people who knew, the safer Noah would be.
But Martin was already ahead.
A surveillance camera captured him at a gas station seventy miles from the Bennett family.
Police rushed to protect them.
The house was empty.
The Bennetts had disappeared.
At first, everyone feared Martin had taken them.
Then agents found a note.
WE KNOW WHO HE IS.
WE LEFT BEFORE HE ARRIVED.
Noah’s adoptive parents had received a warning.
The warning came from Caroline.
Thirteen years earlier.
She had left instructions with the adoption attorney.
If anyone named Martin Cross ever searched for Noah, the family was to activate an emergency relocation plan.
Caroline had anticipated even this.
Richard felt admiration and heartbreak.
She had spent years constructing protections for everyone she loved.
And no one had protected her.
Martin called Richard again.
“You knew.”
“I learned yesterday.”
“She stole my son.”
“She protected him from you.”
“He is my blood.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“That sentence destroyed Victoria too.”
Martin’s breathing sharpened.
“Tell me where he is.”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“I deliberately refused to learn.”
Silence.
Then Martin said something that frightened Richard more than any threat.
“I’ll trade Maya for him.”
Richard’s voice turned cold.
“You will never get near Maya again.”
Martin laughed.
“You still think this is about getting near her.”
The line ended.
Richard immediately called Grant.
“What did he mean?”
Grant did not know.
Three hours later, Rachel Kim arrived with emergency papers.
“Martin filed something.”
Richard stared.
“Filed what?”
“A petition claiming parental rights.”
“To Noah?”
Rachel shook her head.
“To Maya.”
Richard almost laughed.
“He has no biological connection to Maya.”
Rachel placed a DNA report on the desk.
According to the report, Martin did.
Richard stared at the numbers.
Probability of paternity: 99.98%.
Victoria had donated the egg.
Martin Cross had donated the sperm.
Maya’s biological parents were brother and sister.
Richard recoiled.
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“The report is fraudulent.”
Richard looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because the clinic’s archived donor file identifies a different male donor.”
“Who?”
Rachel slid another document forward.
Richard read the name.
Edmund Hale.
His father.
Richard stopped breathing.
May you like
Maya was biologically Richard’s half-sister.
