Chapter 14 - The House Under Siege

Martin had returned to destroy the last evidence he believed remained inside the estate.

He had four armed men with him.

Richard contacted police through the safe room’s independent emergency line.

Response teams were eleven minutes away.

Martin knew he had limited time.

He moved through the house with frightening familiarity.

Study.

Library.

Caroline’s room.

He knew exactly where to look.

Richard watched through the monitors.

“What does he want?” Maya whispered.

“Something that doesn’t belong to him.”

“Mommy’s things?”

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.”

Martin entered Caroline’s bedroom.

He overturned drawers.

Destroyed the dollhouse.

Then he found the compartment where the blue key had been hidden.

Empty.

His face changed.

He turned toward the camera.

“You found it.”

Richard heard his voice through the intercom.

“Good for you.”

Richard picked up the microphone.

“It’s over, Martin.”

Martin laughed.

“You have always misunderstood the word over.”

“Federal agents have everything.”

“Accounts.”

“Recordings.”

“David.”

“Victoria.”

Martin’s smile disappeared.

“You think I care about prison?”

Richard believed him.

Martin had lost control.

That made him more dangerous.

Police sirens approached.

Martin ordered his men to leave.

Two ran.

One was captured outside.

Another exchanged gunfire with police before surrendering.

Martin remained.

He walked toward the safe room.

Richard watched him descend the stairs.

“Daddy,” Maya whispered.

Richard positioned himself between her and the door.

Martin stopped outside.

“You know what Caroline never understood?”

Richard remained silent.

“She thought evidence mattered.”

“She thought truth automatically wins.”

Martin tapped the steel door.

“Truth only matters if someone survives long enough to tell it.”

He placed something beside the lock.

Richard recognized explosive material.

He pulled Maya behind reinforced shelving.

Then another voice came through the corridor.

“Martin!”

Victoria.

Richard stared at the monitor.

Police had brought Victoria to identify one of Martin’s emergency properties earlier that evening.

She had apparently convinced an officer she knew an alternate tunnel beneath the estate.

Now she stood at the bottom of the stairs wearing a bulletproof vest.

Martin slowly turned.

“You.”

Victoria looked terrified.

But she did not retreat.

“You ruined everything.”

Martin laughed.

“You pushed the child in front of a camera.”

“You killed Caroline without permission.”

“You were always the problem.”

Victoria’s face changed.

“You used me.”

“I paid you.”

“You told me Maya would be mine.”

“She was never yours.”

Richard watched Victoria absorb the words.

For the first time, her obsession met the truth.

Martin had never planned to give her Maya.

Maya was an asset to him.

Just as Victoria had been.

Martin raised his weapon.

Victoria stepped backward.

Police shouted from the corridor.

Martin fired toward the ceiling and ran through a maintenance passage.

Richard heard officers follow.

Minutes later the safe-room door opened.

Detective Grant appeared.

“You’re safe.”

Richard carried Maya upstairs.

Victoria sat against a wall in handcuffs.

Their eyes met.

For once, Victoria had nothing to say.

Martin escaped through a storm tunnel beneath the property.

But he left something behind.

The detonator.

Forensic analysis revealed the explosives were never connected.

Martin had been bluffing.

Richard wondered why.

Then Grant showed him a hidden transmitter inside the device.

Martin had not come primarily to destroy evidence.

He had come to plant a listening device.

He still believed Richard knew something he needed.

Something Caroline had hidden.

Richard went through Caroline’s letters again.

The answer appeared in a sentence he had read repeatedly.

Protect Maya, and Maya will protect the truth.

Richard had assumed it was emotional.

Now he wondered whether it was literal.

He asked Maya about Caroline’s old belongings.

Her stuffed animals.

Books.

Jewelry.

Then Maya remembered.

“Mommy gave me something before the hospital.”

“What?”

“A necklace.”

Richard froze.

“Where is it?”

Maya looked worried.

“Victoria took it.”

“When?”

“The day before the stairs.”

Richard immediately informed Grant.

Police searched Victoria’s possessions.

The necklace was not there.

Victoria finally admitted the truth.

She had given it to Martin.

“What was inside it?” Richard asked.

Victoria looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.”

“Martin opened it.”

“And?”

Victoria stared at Richard.

“He started crying.”

Richard felt a chill.

“Why?”

Victoria whispered.

May you like

“Because it proved Caroline had a son.”
