Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

Nora Hale was arrested at 6:42 the following morning.
She did not resist.
According to the officers who stopped her outside New Haven, she had been carrying three thousand dollars in cash, a prepaid phone, and a photograph of her children.
She had also been carrying a loaded flash drive.
By noon, Richard was sitting across from her inside a secure interview room.
Detective Monroe had agreed to let him observe part of the interview from behind a glass partition.
Adrian stood beside him.
Neither man spoke when Nora entered.
She looked older than her photographs.
Her hair had gone almost completely gray.
Her face was thin.
Her hands shook as she sat down.
Monroe placed a recording device on the table.
"Ms. Hale, do you understand your rights?"
Nora nodded.
"Yes."
"Are you willing to speak with us?"
"Yes."
"Let's begin with Elizabeth Whitmore."
Nora closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she didn't answer.
Then she whispered, "She was the best person I ever knew."
Richard pressed his palm against the glass.
Monroe waited.
Nora opened her eyes.
"I was hired to monitor Elizabeth's medication and assist with her recovery."
"Who hired you?"
"Leonard Price."
"Did he tell you to alter her medication?"
Nora's face crumpled.
"He gave me new bottles."
"What did he say they contained?"
"The prescriptions from Dr. Benton."
"Did you believe him?"
"At first."
"Then what changed?"
"Elizabeth became much sicker after the new bottles arrived."
Nora twisted her fingers.
"She was improving before that."
Monroe leaned forward.
"Did you ever administer medication you knew had been altered?"
Nora shook her head fiercely.
"No."
"I need you to be precise."
"I gave her the pills believing they were prescribed."
Nora began crying.
"When I became suspicious, I stopped."
"Did Elizabeth know?"
"Yes."
"What did she do?"
"She asked me to help her collect evidence."
Richard closed his eyes.
His wife had trusted a nurse more than she trusted her own husband.
The realization hurt.
But he understood why.
Nora continued.
"We began copying records."
"Which records?"
"Prescriptions, deliveries, foundation payments."
"Why foundation payments?"
"Because Leonard was using foundation money to pay for the fraudulent medical services."
Monroe wrote something down.
"Did you discover who was altering the medication?"
Nora hesitated.
"I believed Dr. Benton was involved."
"Did you have proof?"
"No."
"What happened the night Elizabeth died?"
Nora stared at the recording device.
Then she looked up.
"Leonard called me."
"What did he say?"
"He said Elizabeth had taken Lily."
Richard stiffened.
Monroe noticed.
"Did Elizabeth take her daughter?"
"No."
Nora shook her head.
"Lily was upstairs asleep."
"Then why did Leonard say that?"
"He wanted me to panic."
"Why?"
"Because he knew I would call Elizabeth."
Nora's voice trembled.
"I called her and told her someone was using Lily to lure her somewhere."
Monroe leaned forward.
"What did Elizabeth say?"
"She said she was already on her way home."
"And then?"
Nora covered her face.
"I heard a crash."
Richard gripped the edge of the observation counter.
"A crash?"
Monroe's voice remained steady.
"Did she say anything afterward?"
Nora nodded.
"She said, 'They found me.'"
Richard's breath caught.
Nora was crying openly now.
"Then I heard a man tell her to give him the drive."
Monroe stopped writing.
"Did you recognize his voice?"
Nora nodded.
"Leonard."
Richard stared at Adrian.
His face had gone rigid.
"What happened next?" Monroe asked.
"Elizabeth screamed."
Nora wiped her eyes.
"Then the call ended."
Silence filled the room.
Monroe waited before asking the next question.
"Why didn't you report this?"
"I tried."
"To whom?"
"Dr. Benton."
Richard felt something inside him break.
Nora continued.
"He told me Elizabeth had suffered a medical crisis."
"What did he say about the phone call?"
"He said I was confused."
"Did you believe him?"
"No."
Nora shook her head.
"I went to the hospital."
"What happened there?"
"Leonard found me in the parking garage."
Her voice dropped.
"He showed me photographs of Vanessa and Daniel."
Monroe leaned forward.
"Threatening photographs?"
Nora nodded.
"He said my children would disappear if I spoke."
"Then what?"
"He gave me a new identity."
"Did you leave voluntarily?"
Nora hesitated.
"I made the decision to leave because I believed my children would be killed."
Richard pressed his forehead against the glass.
Two children had lost their mother because Leonard wanted silence.
And Elizabeth had died trying to stop him.
Monroe placed another photograph on the table.
It showed Nora outside Lily's school.
"Why did you return?"
Nora's face changed.
"Because Leonard came after Vanessa."
"What did you know about the wedding?"
"Everything."
Monroe waited.
Nora continued.
"He told Vanessa that I was dead."
Her eyes filled.
"He used my disappearance to make her believe she had nobody left."
"Did you contact your daughter?"
"I tried."
"How?"
"I sent letters."
"Did she receive them?"
"I don't know."
Monroe looked at the flash drive recovered during the arrest.
"What is on this?"
Nora swallowed.
"Records from Elizabeth's final month."
"Anything else?"
"A recording."
"What recording?"
Nora looked directly toward the observation glass.
She couldn't see Richard clearly through the reflection.
But she seemed to know he was there.
"The night Elizabeth died, Leonard didn't call me from his own phone."
Monroe frowned.
"Whose phone did he use?"
"Richard's private office line."
Richard stiffened.
Monroe leaned forward.
"Are you certain?"
Nora nodded.
"I recognized the number."
Richard turned toward Adrian.
"Someone used my office?"
Adrian said nothing.
Inside the interview room, Nora continued.
"Leonard wanted Elizabeth to believe Richard had authorized the meeting."
Monroe looked up.
"Did Elizabeth believe it?"
Nora's voice broke.
"I don't know."
She reached for the photograph of her children.
"But she told me one thing before the call ended."
"What?"
"She said, 'Tell Richard I never stopped trying to come home.'"
Richard sank into a chair.
He couldn't breathe.
He had spent two years believing his wife had died in a hospital after an unpredictable medical emergency.
Now he understood that she may have spent her final conscious moments trying to escape people he trusted.
Monroe turned off the recorder for a short break.
Richard barely noticed.
Adrian watched him silently.
Then he said, "There's something you should know."
Richard looked up.
Adrian's expression was grave.
"I saw Nora outside Lily's school."
Richard stared.
"When?"
"Last month."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"I didn't know it was Nora until I saw the warehouse photograph."
Richard stood.
"Did you know my daughter was being watched?"
"I suspected."
Richard's voice rose.
"You suspected?"
Adrian stepped back.
"Richard—"
"You knew there was danger around her."
"I was trying to determine who was involved."
Richard shook with anger.
"You used my family to force Leonard into the open."
Adrian didn't deny it.
Richard stared at him.
"Did you know Lily would find out about the fake pregnancy?"
Adrian looked away.
"Yes."
Richard felt cold.
"Did you arrange for her to see it?"
"No."
"Did you encourage her to tell me?"
Adrian hesitated.
"She had already seen the costume."
Richard stepped closer.
"Answer the question."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"I told her the truth matters."
Richard stared at him in disbelief.
"You made her part of your investigation."
"I thought you'd believe your daughter."
The words struck like a blow.
Richard went silent.
Adrian continued.
"I thought you'd cancel the wedding."
Richard looked away.
He wanted to blame Adrian for everything.
For the danger.
For the humiliation.
For the blood-red mark on Lily's cheek.
But the last act belonged to him.
He was the one who had struck his daughter.
He was the one who had refused to listen.
Adrian's deception didn't excuse his violence.
Richard said quietly, "You had no right to use her."
Adrian looked down.
"You're right."
Richard turned toward the interview room.
"And I had no right to hurt her."
Neither man spoke.
Then Detective Monroe opened the door.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Richard looked up.
"What?"
"We've examined the flash drive."
Her expression was deeply troubled.
"There's a second recording."
"Of Elizabeth?"
Monroe nodded.
Richard felt his heart race.
"What does she say?"
The detective hesitated.
"She names the person who arranged the meeting at the warehouse."
Richard stood.
"Who?"
Monroe looked toward Adrian.
May you like
Then back at Richard.
"Margaret Ellis."
