Chapter 2 - The Boy Behind the Locked Door

For three seconds, darkness swallowed the ballroom.

Then the emergency lights came on.

Red strips glowed along the baseboards.

The chandeliers remained dark.

Guests shouted over one another.

Someone near the entrance began pounding on the doors.

Richard's first thought was Lily.

His second was that somebody had deliberately cut the power.

"Lily!"

"I'm here!"

Her voice came from beside Margaret.

Richard pushed through the crowd.

He found Margaret crouched against a wall with one arm wrapped around Lily's shoulders.

The little girl looked terrified.

But she was safe.

Richard reached for her.

Then remembered her stepping away from him.

He stopped.

"Are you hurt?"

Lily shook her head.

"Where did the boy go?"

Richard looked at Margaret.

"What boy?"

"The one who screamed."

Vanessa stumbled toward them.

"Daniel."

She caught herself against a chair.

"That was Daniel."

Margaret took charge.

"Richard, call the police."

Richard pulled out his phone.

No service.

He checked again.

The screen displayed the same warning.

Margaret's phone was useless too.

Thomas Reed stood near the stage.

He was speaking rapidly into his radio.

Richard marched toward him.

"Give me that."

Thomas moved backward.

"Sir, you don't understand."

"Then explain it."

"It's a security situation."

"My daughter has been threatened."

"I'm trying to contain it."

Richard grabbed the radio.

Thomas caught his wrist.

For a moment, the two men stood motionless.

Then Richard said something he had never said to his security director before.

"Take your hand off me."

Thomas released him.

Richard lifted the radio.

"Whoever you are, listen carefully."

Static crackled.

"This is Richard Whitmore."

A familiar voice answered.

"Hello, Richard."

It belonged to the man from the ballroom.

Richard had never heard him speak before.

Yet the casual confidence in his tone made Richard feel as though the stranger had known him for years.

"Who are you?"

"Someone you should have listened to long ago."

"What do you want?"

"A conversation."

"Then come back inside."

The man chuckled.

"You're still giving orders."

Richard gripped the radio.

"You threatened my daughter."

"No, Richard."

The voice hardened.

"I asked for her."

"Why?"

"Because she knows something you don't."

The radio went silent.

Richard turned toward Thomas.

"Who hired him?"

Thomas swallowed.

"I didn't hire anybody."

"You opened the gate."

"His access was authorized."

"By whom?"

Thomas looked toward Margaret.

Margaret's expression changed.

"Don't even try."

Thomas raised both hands.

"The authorization came from the family office."

Richard frowned.

"That's impossible."

The family office handled his investments, property holdings, trusts, and charitable foundations.

Its director was Leonard Price.

Leonard had worked for Richard for twenty-six years.

He was also standing twenty feet away, beside the wedding cake.

Richard looked at him.

Leonard didn't look surprised.

That was the first thing Richard noticed.

While guests panicked and security guards moved toward the doors, Leonard stood quietly with his hands folded.

"Leonard."

The older man looked up.

"Yes, Richard?"

"Did you authorize that man?"

Leonard's face remained composed.

"I approved several outside contractors for today's event."

"Was one wearing a black fedora?"

"I couldn't say."

"You couldn't say?"

"Richard, this is not the time."

A crash interrupted them.

A service door at the far side of the ballroom burst open.

A small boy stumbled through.

He looked about nine years old.

His white dress shirt was dirty.

A strip of silver tape hung from one wrist.

Vanessa screamed his name.

"Daniel!"

The boy ran toward her.

She dropped to her knees and caught him.

He buried his face against her shoulder.

"They locked me in the flower room."

Vanessa held him tightly.

"Who?"

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

His eyes widened.

He pointed at Thomas.

"Him."

Thomas froze.

Richard turned.

"Explain yourself."

Thomas drew a sharp breath.

"I was following instructions."

"Whose instructions?"

Before he could answer, two guards appeared behind him.

Both looked confused.

Thomas glanced between them.

Then he abruptly reached into his jacket.

Richard expected a gun.

Instead, Thomas pulled out a folded piece of paper.

He threw it onto the floor.

"That's why."

Margaret picked it up.

She unfolded it.

Her eyes moved rapidly across the page.

"Richard."

"What?"

"This is a payment schedule."

"From whom?"

Margaret looked at Thomas.

"Twenty thousand dollars to keep Daniel inside the estate until the wedding ceremony was completed."

Richard stared.

"For what?"

Thomas shook his head.

"I don't know."

Margaret continued reading.

"Another hundred thousand upon execution of the marriage certificate and the revised family trust."

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

"The revised trust?"

Leonard Price moved.

It was a small movement.

One step toward the service exit.

Margaret saw it.

"Leonard."

He stopped.

"Where are you going?"

"To find the police."

"You can stay right there."

Richard took the document from her.

He read the final line.

The authorization bore his electronic signature.

His name.

His private approval code.

But he had never seen it.

"This is forged."

Leonard adjusted his glasses.

"Perhaps an administrative misunderstanding."

Margaret turned toward Richard.

"When was the last time you reviewed your trust?"

"Six months ago."

"Before Vanessa?"

"Yes."

Margaret's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Did Leonard ask you to sign anything this week?"

Richard thought back.

Three days earlier, Leonard had brought a thick folder to his study.

Wedding insurance.

Tax planning.

Estate restructuring.

Routine paperwork.

Richard had signed where Leonard placed the colored tabs.

He remembered asking whether everything was standard.

Leonard had smiled.

Completely standard, Richard.

Now Richard looked at his longtime adviser.

"What did I sign?"

Leonard said nothing.

Margaret stepped closer.

"What did he sign, Leonard?"

The older man finally spoke.

"A man in his position should understand the consequences of his decisions."

Richard stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you should have read the documents."

Margaret pulled out her tablet.

She had saved copies of Richard's previous estate documents.

She began searching.

Richard turned toward Vanessa.

"How much did you know?"

Vanessa was still holding Daniel.

"Not everything."

"That's not an answer."

She looked at Lily.

Then at the red mark on the child's cheek.

"I knew I was supposed to wear the fake belly."

"Why?"

"Because they needed everyone to believe I was pregnant."

"Who needed it?"

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"Leonard."

Richard turned sharply.

Leonard didn't deny it.

Margaret found the file.

She opened it.

Then stood perfectly still.

"Oh, God."

Richard looked at her.

"What?"

She raised the screen.

"Richard, there's a clause in the amended trust."

"What clause?"

"It transfers emergency voting control of Whitmore Holdings to your spouse upon certification of a pregnancy involving a potential beneficiary."

Richard couldn't speak.

Margaret continued.

"And after the marriage, Vanessa would have become your spouse."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I wasn't supposed to get anything."

Margaret looked directly at Leonard.

"She was never meant to."

Richard felt cold.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret scrolled farther.

"There's a power-of-attorney provision attached."

She stopped reading.

Her face drained of color.

"Leonard was appointed the interim financial agent."

Richard slowly turned toward him.

"Why?"

Leonard smiled for the first time.

It was tired.

Almost disappointed.

"Because you were too sentimental to give me what I earned."

Richard stepped forward.

"What did you do?"

Leonard looked at the little girl standing against Margaret's side.

"Your daughter was supposed to stay upstairs."

Lily tightened her grip on Margaret's jacket.

Leonard continued.

"The ceremony would have taken fifteen minutes."

Richard's voice shook with anger.

"You threatened children to steal my company?"

Leonard tilted his head.

"You still think this is about money."

Before Richard could respond, Margaret's tablet chimed.

An encrypted email had arrived through the estate's internal network.

There was no sender's name.

Only a subject line.

ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED TO ELIZABETH.

Margaret opened the message.

Attached was a photograph.

Richard's late wife stood outside a small medical clinic.

Beside her was Leonard Price.

Between them stood the man in the black fedora.

The photograph was dated eleven days before Elizabeth Whitmore died.

Richard stared at the screen.

Then he whispered the only question that mattered.

"Why was my wife meeting him?"
