Chapter 12 - The Door Nobody Could Open

The hospital's pediatric wing went into lockdown at 3:18 p.m.

By the time Richard arrived, police officers had sealed the third floor.

Nurses stood behind a security checkpoint.

A doctor was speaking into a radio.

Richard pushed toward the elevators.

A uniformed officer stopped him.

"Sir, you can't go through."

"My daughter is inside."

The officer held his ground.

"What's her name?"

"Lily Whitmore."

The officer's expression changed.

"Wait here."

Richard nearly shouted.

But Margaret caught his arm.

"Richard."

He turned sharply.

"Don't tell me to calm down."

"I'm not."

Margaret held his gaze.

"I'm telling you to listen."

He stopped.

She pointed toward the police officers.

"They're trying to keep Lily safe."

Richard took a trembling breath.

The officer returned.

"Your daughter is secure."

Richard almost collapsed.

"Where?"

"She's in a locked treatment room with two hospital staff members."

"Is she hurt?"

"Not according to the latest report."

Richard covered his mouth.

He couldn't speak.

The officer continued.

"An adult male attempted to enter the pediatric unit using a fraudulent visitor authorization."

"Victor Mercer?"

"We're confirming his identity."

"Where is he?"

"Security detained a suspect near the east stairwell."

Richard closed his eyes.

Relief hit him so suddenly he had to lean against the wall.

Then anger followed.

He wanted to find Mercer.

He wanted to demand answers.

He wanted to do a thousand things that would make him feel powerful again.

But none of them mattered as much as the small girl behind the locked door.

"Can I see Lily?"

The officer hesitated.

"The child-protection team is coordinating access."

Richard nodded.

"All right."

The officer looked surprised.

Richard swallowed.

"I'll follow their instructions."

Twenty minutes later, a social worker named Claire Dawson led him into a private consultation room.

She was gentle but direct.

"Mr. Whitmore, Lily has experienced several frightening events in a very short period."

Richard nodded.

"I know."

"She witnessed the wedding confrontation."

"Yes."

"She was struck by you."

Richard's eyes filled.

"Yes."

"And now someone has attempted to approach her using a false authorization."

Richard covered his face.

Claire waited.

Finally, he spoke.

"I want to fix this."

"I understand."

She leaned forward.

"But we need to focus on what Lily needs, not what would make you feel better."

Richard lowered his hands.

"Tell me."

"Predictability."

He nodded.

"Honesty."

"Yes."

"Adults who do not pressure her."

Richard swallowed.

"I understand."

Claire studied him.

"She has asked to speak with you."

Richard's breath caught.

"She has?"

"Yes."

"But she also asked that I remain in the room."

Richard nodded immediately.

"Of course."

A few minutes later, Lily entered with a nurse.

She wore blue pajamas covered in little white stars.

Her cheek was still faintly swollen.

Richard felt tears rising.

He remained seated.

He didn't rush toward her.

He didn't open his arms.

He waited.

Lily stopped near the doorway.

"Daddy?"

"Hi, sweetheart."

She looked at Claire.

Then back at Richard.

"Are you mad?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"At me?"

"Never for telling the truth."

Lily studied him.

"You were mad yesterday."

Richard swallowed.

"Yes."

"And you hit me."

His voice broke.

"Yes."

Lily looked at the floor.

"It hurt."

Richard felt as if his heart were being torn apart.

"I know."

She shook her head.

"No, Daddy."

Her eyes filled.

"You don't."

He went silent.

She was right.

He couldn't know exactly what that moment had done to her.

He could only accept it.

"You're right," he said.

"I don't know how much it hurt."

Lily looked up.

"But I know I was wrong."

He took a breath.

"I should never have hit you."

"Even if I was lying?"

"Even then."

Lily considered this carefully.

"Even if I broke something?"

"Even then."

"Even if you're really, really mad?"

Richard nodded.

"Even then."

Her lower lip trembled.

"Mommy never hit me."

Richard's tears finally fell.

"She didn't."

Lily looked toward Claire.

Then back at him.

"I miss her."

Richard pressed his hand against his mouth.

"Me too."

Lily took one small step forward.

"Why did she leave?"

Richard shook his head.

"She didn't want to."

"Then why?"

He looked toward Claire.

She nodded gently, encouraging age-appropriate honesty without speculation.

Richard turned back.

"Your mommy got very sick."

Lily nodded.

"I know."

"And we're trying to understand everything that happened."

Her eyes widened.

"Did somebody make her sick?"

Richard hesitated.

"We don't know all the answers yet."

Lily looked down.

"I heard them talking."

"Who?"

"Mommy and Mr. Leonard."

Richard's heart began pounding.

"When?"

"Before she went to the hospital."

He remained still.

"What did they say?"

Lily squeezed the hem of her pajama shirt.

"Mommy said he had to stop."

Richard felt cold.

"What did Mr. Leonard say?"

Lily looked frightened.

"He said nobody would believe her."

Richard closed his eyes.

Then Lily spoke again.

"Mommy told him I saw."

The room went silent.

Richard looked up.

"Saw what?"

Lily hesitated.

Claire moved closer.

"You don't have to answer right now, Lily."

The little girl nodded.

Then looked at her father.

"I saw the bottles."

Richard swallowed.

"What bottles?"

"The ones in Mommy's room."

Lily's eyes filled.

"Mr. Leonard was putting little white things inside."

Richard felt his stomach turn.

He did not ask another question.

He understood that a trained interviewer needed to handle the details.

Instead, he said quietly, "Thank you for telling us."

Lily looked relieved.

"Are you going to believe me?"

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

She studied him for a long moment.

Then she stepped closer.

"Can you sit with me?"

Richard looked at Claire.

She nodded.

He moved to the small couch.

Lily sat beside him.

Not in his lap.

Not in his arms.

Just beside him.

It was enough.

Richard looked down at her.

"I'm going to get help learning how to be a better daddy."

Lily leaned her head against the couch cushion.

"Okay."

He swallowed.

"I love you."

She looked at him.

"I know."

The answer was quiet.

Careful.

But it wasn't rejection.

It was a beginning.

Outside the consultation room, Detective Monroe received an urgent message.

The suspect detained near the stairwell had been identified.

It wasn't Victor Mercer.

It was a man carrying false identification and an authorization form bearing Mercer's forged signature.

The real Victor Mercer was missing.

And according to his private travel records, he had booked a flight out of the country for that evening.

But that wasn't the worst news.

A hospital security camera had captured the suspect speaking into a phone.

Investigators isolated the final sentence.

"The girl remembers the medication. We have to shut this down tonight."

The speaker on the other end of the call had not yet been identified.
