Chapter 9 - THE SON WHO WAS ALIVE

Liana did not scream.

The moment was too large for sound.

She lifted Elias from the bassinet.

His body was warm.

Solid.

Alive.

For twenty-two days, she had woken every morning believing he was beneath the earth.

Now his fingers curled around hers.

Liana sank to the floor.

Matteo stood in the doorway.

He did not interrupt.

He watched her press her lips against the baby’s forehead.

Her cheeks.

His hands.

She whispered the same words repeatedly.

“I’m here.”

“I’m here.”

“I’m here.”

Elias cried once.

Then settled against her.

Exactly where he belonged.

Matteo turned away to give her privacy.

His eyes burned.

He thought of Serena.

He thought of the infant she had lost.

He thought of Nico.

He thought of every parent whose child appeared somewhere inside those servers as a transaction code.

Security found two nurses upstairs connected to Vittoria’s network.

Both were detained.

Neither knew where Vittoria had gone.

A pediatrician examined Elias immediately.

Healthy.

Mild dehydration.

No evidence of serious illness.

No respiratory failure.

No condition that could possibly justify the death report Liana had received.

He had been stolen within hours of birth.

When Liana emerged from the examination room carrying him, Elena stood outside.

The sisters looked at each other.

Elena began crying.

Liana placed Elias in her arms.

“Aunt Elena.”

Elena made a broken sound.

She held him as if touching something holy.

Nico sat with Maribel nearby.

The nine-month-old watched.

Then reached toward Elena.

For one strange, beautiful minute, Elena held both boys.

One child taken from her.

One child taken from her sister.

Matteo watched from several feet away.

Liana noticed.

She approached.

“You found him.”

“We found him.”

“You believed me.”

“Eventually.”

She almost smiled.

“Eventually.”

Their eyes met.

Something quiet passed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Recognition.

They had crossed the same darkness.

Then the federal agents arrived.

Serena’s mirrored archive had names powerful enough to require national jurisdiction.

The investigation expanded within hours.

Saint Aurelia’s maternity department was sealed.

Four administrators were detained.

Two physicians vanished before authorities reached their homes.

By noon, news vans surrounded the hospital.

Matteo’s name began appearing on television.

VARRIC FAMILY LINKED TO ILLEGAL ADOPTION NETWORK.

Liana watched the headline from a private room.

“That makes it sound like you ran it.”

Matteo shrugged.

“Headlines are rarely patient.”

“Does that bother you?”

“Normally?”

“No.”

“Today?”

He looked at Nico.

“Yes.”

The legal question arrived quickly.

Who was Nico?

Elena’s biological son.

Matteo’s legal son.

A child whose birth certificate was fraudulent.

A child Matteo had raised and loved.

Elena sat with an attorney.

She listened for twenty minutes.

Then interrupted.

“I am not filing to remove Matteo as Nico’s father.”

The attorney blinked.

“You should understand your rights.”

“I understand my child.”

“You have the right to seek immediate—”

“I said no.”

Matteo looked at her.

Elena continued.

“Nico needs stability.”

“He knows Matteo.”

“He trusts Matteo.”

“And I need time.”

The lawyer closed his folder.

“What arrangement do you want?”

Elena looked at Matteo.

“Family.”

The simplicity of the answer nearly broke him.

That evening, they returned to the estate.

For the first time, Liana entered not as a maid.

Her red uniform was gone.

She wore borrowed clothes.

Elias slept against her chest.

Nico sat on Matteo’s arm.

Elena walked beside them.

The mansion looked different.

Less like a palace.

More like a place built on secrets that daylight had finally entered.

At 6:40 p.m., Matteo received a call from federal investigators.

One of the names in Serena’s archive had been found dead.

A doctor.

Another had fled.

And Vittoria’s financial accounts were being emptied.

“She’s preparing to disappear,” Matteo said.

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“You know her better?”

“I know what she does when cornered.”

“What?”

“She destroys the person who cornered her.”

Everyone looked at Matteo.

He understood.

Serena had been dead eight months.

So who had now cornered Vittoria?

Liana.

Elena.

And Matteo.

Three targets.

His security doubled.

No one slept alone.

At midnight, Liana sat in the nursery with Elias.

Nico slept in his crib several feet away.

Matteo entered quietly.

“You should rest.”

“So should you.”

“I don’t know how anymore.”

Liana looked at him.

“You learned to be a father without knowing whether the child was yours.”

“He was mine.”

The response came instantly.

Then Matteo looked down.

“Is.”

Liana smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

He sat in the chair opposite her.

“What will you do?”

“With Elias?”

“With everything.”

Liana looked at her baby.

“Wake up tomorrow.”

“Then the day after.”

“After that, I don’t know.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

“What about you?”

Matteo looked toward Nico.

“I’m going to find my mother.”

“And?”

He did not answer.

Liana understood what silence meant in Matteo Varric’s world.

She shook her head.

“No.”

His gaze shifted to her.

“No what?”

“Don’t become her to defeat her.”

“You don’t know what I intend.”

“I know your face.”

He almost laughed.

“You’ve known me one day.”

“Long day.”

That time he did laugh.

Quietly.

Then the nursery window shattered.

Matteo lunged.

He pulled Liana and Elias down.

Security stormed the room.

No gunshot followed.

A stone had broken the glass.

A message was tied around it.

Matteo opened the paper.

MIDNIGHT TOMORROW.

VARRIC FAMILY MAUSOLEUM.

BRING SERENA’S ARCHIVE.

OR ELENA FINISHES WHAT SHE STARTED NINETEEN YEARS AGO.

May you like

Liana looked across the room.

Elena was gone.
