Chapter 16 - THE GRAVE THEY OPENED

There was one thing left.

Elias’s grave.

Authorities had postponed the exhumation once Elias was found alive.

The coffin remained in the cemetery.

Liana avoided deciding what to do.

Until spring.

Then she woke one morning and said, “Today.”

Matteo did not ask what she meant.

He knew.

The cemetery was green now.

Nothing like the gray September afternoon when Liana first stood there.

Elena came.

Matteo came.

No reporters.

No security visible except one distant vehicle.

The coffin was opened privately.

Inside was not another baby.

Thank God.

Blankets.

A weighted medical doll.

Nothing human.

The hospital had buried an object and allowed a grieving mother to believe it was her child.

Liana stared.

She expected anger.

Instead she felt something strange.

Release.

“There was never anyone here.”

Matteo stood beside her.

“No.”

“All those nights I talked to him.”

“He still mattered.”

“But he wasn’t here.”

“No.”

Liana looked toward Elias sleeping in Elena’s arms.

Then back at the grave.

“I thought this was the place I lost him.”

Matteo took her hand.

“It wasn’t.”

The cemetery staff removed the false coffin.

Liana replaced the headstone.

Not with another marker.

She planted a small tree.

No name.

No death date.

Just life.

When they returned home, Nico took three steps without support.

Everyone screamed.

Nico became frightened and sat down.

Then laughed because everyone else was laughing.

Elias watched from a blanket on the floor.

Liana looked at Matteo.

“You missed the first step.”

“I was standing two feet away.”

“You were looking at your phone.”

“It was a message from the attorney.”

“You missed history.”

“I saw step two.”

“Unacceptable.”

He placed one hand over his heart.

“I will carry the shame forever.”

Nico stood again.

This time Matteo dropped the phone.

“Come here.”

Nico took four steps.

Then fell against his father’s legs.

Matteo lifted him high.

For a second, Liana saw him on the first night.

Unshaven.

Terrified.

Holding a screaming baby he did not know how to help.

So much had changed.

But the love had been there before the answers.

That mattered.

Later that night, Matteo found a box outside his bedroom.

Inside was the red maid uniform Liana had worn on her first day.

Folded.

Clean.

A note sat on top.

You can burn this.

He carried it downstairs.

Liana sat near the fireplace.

“You’re dramatic.”

“You told me to burn it.”

“I was joking.”

“Too late.”

He tossed it into the fire.

She gasped.

“I might have wanted the buttons.”

“You have terrible timing.”

The red fabric caught.

They watched it burn.

“Do you regret coming here?” Matteo asked.

Liana considered.

“I regret why I came.”

“Because grief didn’t pay rent?”

She smiled.

“You remember.”

“I remember everything about that night.”

“I don’t regret walking across the foyer.”

“Even when my guard told you to stop?”

“Especially then.”

Matteo looked at her.

“Why did you?”

“I still don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

Liana glanced upstairs.

“Nico.”

“He sounded like Elias.”

“No.”

Matteo shook his head.

“You hadn’t heard Elias cry in twenty-two days.”

“You heard Nico once.”

“And crossed a room full of armed guards.”

“Why?”

Liana thought.

Then realized.

The lullaby.

The face.

The pull she could not explain.

Maybe Nico had recognized something first.

Maybe Liana had too.

Not memory.

Kinship.

A trace of Elena.

A rhythm.

A voice inside a voice.

Family recognizing family before facts caught up.

She rested her head against Matteo’s shoulder.

“I think he called me.”

Matteo kissed her hair.

“He screamed at everyone.”

“No.”

“At me.”

“He screamed at you.”

“He screamed at the guards.”

“He screamed at Delia.”

“With me, it was a call.”

“Of course.”

“You’re jealous because your son chose me.”

“My son has questionable judgment.”

Liana laughed.

Upstairs, Nico started crying.

Matteo sighed.

“Your admirer requests you.”

Liana stood.

May you like

“He wants you too.”

They climbed the stairs together.
