Chapter 14 - THE DAUGHTER AT THE GATE

Three months later, winter covered the estate.

Liana no longer wore a maid uniform.

She worked part-time with the foundation created from seized Varric assets.

Its purpose was simple.

Help families affected by illegal infant transfers locate records and obtain counseling.

Elena lived in a cottage on the estate grounds.

Close enough for Nico to see her daily.

Far enough to have a door she could lock from the inside.

That mattered.

Elias had learned to smile.

Nico had learned to walk while holding furniture.

Matteo had learned that expensive Italian shoes were terrible protection against baby vomit.

Life became ordinary in small pieces.

Then Claire arrived.

Elena’s eighteen-year-old daughter stood outside the gate on a cold December afternoon.

Alone.

She had Elena’s eyes.

Security called Matteo first.

He called Elena.

Elena became so pale Liana made her sit down.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“What if she hates me?”

“She came here.”

“What if she came to tell me never to contact her again?”

“Then you listen.”

Elena looked at Liana.

“I don’t know how to be her mother.”

“You don’t have to start there.”

Liana took her hand.

“Start with hello.”

Claire entered the library.

Elena stood.

Neither moved.

Claire looked at her for a long time.

Then said, “You look like me.”

Elena laughed through tears.

“I was thinking you look like me.”

“That’s probably how genetics works.”

Elena laughed again.

Claire did too.

The tension cracked.

They spoke for three hours.

Claire loved her adoptive parents.

Elena said she was glad.

Claire had feared hearing resentment.

There was none.

She asked about her birth.

Elena answered what she could.

She did not describe details Claire did not need.

Before leaving, Claire asked to come back after Christmas.

Elena waited until the door closed.

Then collapsed into Liana’s arms.

“She came back.”

“Yes.”

“She wants to come back.”

“Yes.”

That evening, Matteo found Liana standing by the foyer windows.

Snow fell outside.

“You’re crying.”

“Observant.”

“Occupational habit.”

“She got one back.”

“Elena?”

Liana nodded.

“Not back like possession.”

“I know.”

“She got a chance.”

Matteo stood beside her.

Liana looked at him.

“We were all treated like ownership was love.”

“Vittoria owned people.”

“My hospital owned my grief.”

“You tried to own every danger before it reached Nico.”

“And you?”

“I tried to hold onto the dead because letting go felt like betrayal.”

Matteo looked at her.

“Do you still?”

“Sometimes.”

He nodded.

“So do I.”

The silence between them had changed over months.

It no longer felt guarded.

It felt full.

Liana turned.

“You know everyone in the staff thinks we’re strange.”

“Everyone in the staff is correct.”

“I mean us.”

“I know what you mean.”

“What are we?”

Matteo considered.

“Tired.”

She laughed.

“Coward.”

“Frequently.”

She studied his face.

“Serena mattered.”

“She still does.”

“I don’t want to replace her.”

“You couldn’t.”

Liana flinched.

Matteo immediately understood.

“That came out wrong.”

“No.”

“It came out honest.”

He stepped closer.

“Liana.”

She looked at him.

“Serena is part of who I am.”

“She is Nico’s mother.”

“She is the reason he survived.”

“None of that creates less room for you.”

Liana’s eyes filled.

Matteo lifted one hand.

Stopped before touching her.

He had learned to ask without words.

Liana closed the distance.

His fingers rested against her cheek.

The first kiss was not dramatic.

No chandeliers exploded.

No music played.

No one gasped from a staircase.

It was quiet.

Careful.

Two people testing whether happiness could exist without punishment.

When they separated, Nico clapped from the hallway.

They both turned.

Elena stood holding him.

She raised one eyebrow.

Nico clapped again.

Liana covered her face.

Matteo sighed.

“My son has no discretion.”

Elena smiled.

May you like

“He gets that from your side.”

For once, the Varric mansion filled with laughter instead of secrets.
