Chapter 9 - The Mother Who Never Stopped Looking

Olivia had spent fourteen years believing she was unwanted.
Not by her adoptive parents.
They had loved her.
Her mother had sewn her Halloween costumes, stayed awake through childhood fevers, and taught her to ride a bicycle.
Her father had attended every school performance.
He still kept her first spelling test in a drawer.
But somewhere beneath that love had lived a question.
Why had her birth mother surrendered her?
Now, standing outside her apartment, Olivia realized she might have spent her life asking the wrong question.
She looked at her father.
"What do you mean she never gave me away?"
His eyes filled.
"I signed papers."
"What papers?"
"Adoption papers."
"You told me that."
He shook his head.
"They were brought to us."
"By whom?"
"A lawyer."
"What lawyer?"
He struggled to remember.
"Margaret."
Hannah stepped forward.
"Margaret Vale?"
The old man pointed.
"Yes."
Daniel felt sick.
Olivia stared at him.
"Who is Margaret Vale?"
"My family's attorney."
Olivia stepped away.
She looked toward Daniel.
Then at Hannah.
Then back at her father.
"Are you telling me my adoption was arranged by the same people who told Daniel his daughter died?"
Nobody answered.
Olivia began crying.
"Why?"
Daniel approached carefully.
"I don't know everything yet."
She turned sharply.
"Then find out!"
He stopped.
"Please."
Her voice cracked.
"I need you to find out."
The DNA results arrived forty-eight hours later.
Daniel insisted on using an independent accredited laboratory.
He and Olivia submitted their samples under legal supervision.
Claire agreed to be tested separately.
Hannah provided documentation from her mother's archive to investigators.
No one told Eleanor which laboratory had been chosen.
When the report arrived, Daniel couldn't bring himself to open it.
Olivia sat opposite him in a private conference room.
Hannah stood near the window.
An attorney named Rebecca Sloan supervised the meeting.
Rebecca had no connection to the Whitmore family.
She opened the report.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
"Rebecca?"
She looked at him.
"The results support a biological father-daughter relationship."
Daniel's breathing stopped.
Rebecca continued.
"The reported probability of paternity is greater than 99.99 percent."
Olivia stared at her.
"What?"
Rebecca turned the report toward her.
"Daniel Whitmore is your biological father."
Olivia pressed both hands against her mouth.
Daniel began crying.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
For twenty-six years, he had imagined a daughter who would never grow older.
A baby frozen forever in a photograph.
Now she sat across from him.
Alive.
Twenty-six years old.
With Caroline's eyes.
Caroline's smile.
Caroline's daughter.
He looked at her.
"Grace."
Olivia shook her head gently.
"My name is Olivia."
Daniel nodded immediately.
"Of course."
She began to cry harder.
He extended his hand across the table.
Not demanding.
Not assuming.
Simply offering.
Olivia looked at it.
Then placed her hand in his.
Daniel closed his fingers around hers.
The same hand he had held for eleven minutes twenty-six years earlier had grown into the hand of a woman.
And he had missed every year between.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Olivia shook her head.
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
"You didn't know."
He lowered his head.
She moved around the table.
Then, slowly, she embraced him.
Daniel held her as though the entire world had finally stopped falling apart.
The reunion lasted nineteen minutes before another truth arrived.
Rebecca's assistant knocked.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
Rebecca turned.
"What is it?"
"The second laboratory report."
Claire's DNA analysis.
Hannah looked up.
Rebecca opened the secure document.
Her expression changed.
Daniel released Olivia.
"What?"
Rebecca read the results again.
Then looked at Hannah.
"Claire Bennett's biological mother was Evelyn Bennett."
Hannah nodded.
"We suspected that."
Rebecca swallowed.
"Yes."
"But there's something else."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Rebecca turned the report.
"The paternal comparison included a reference sample supplied through Samuel Mercer's legal counsel."
Hannah stared.
"Why?"
Rebecca looked toward the door.
"Because Samuel Mercer requested the comparison."
Olivia's hand tightened around Daniel's.
Rebecca continued.
"Claire is not Samuel Mercer's biological daughter."
Hannah waited.
"Then who is her father?"
Rebecca hesitated.
"Adrian Whitmore."
Daniel stared at the report.
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.
His brother.
His brother's daughter.
A child born in the same hospital on the same morning.
A child raised by the doctor who had signed Grace's false death certificate.
Daniel whispered, "Adrian knew."
Hannah's expression darkened.
"No."
She looked at the report.
"Adrian told us Evelyn Bennett's baby was taken to cover up a hospital transfer."
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
Hannah finished the thought.
"But Evelyn wasn't just another patient."
May you like
She looked toward the doorway.
"She was the woman Adrian was trying to erase."
