Chapter 13 - The First Baby

The truth about the first baby was buried in a records room nobody had entered for nineteen years.
St. Catherine's Hospital had closed after a merger.
Its buildings had been converted into medical offices.
Most of its paper records were transferred to warehouses.
But one storage room remained sealed after a flood damaged the basement.
Sun-hee Park had discovered that room before her death.
She had left its location inside a coded section of her notebook.
Hannah realized the code wasn't complicated.
It was personal.
The numbers matched the birthdays of women her mother had helped.
Hannah found the key while sitting alone in her apartment.
A small brass key taped inside the back cover.
Beneath it, her mother had written:
Room 14.
The room contained hundreds of boxes.
Hannah entered with Daniel, Olivia, Claire, and a court-authorized evidence team.
Every shelf was photographed before anything was touched.
The investigator supervising the search, Detective Elena Ruiz, insisted on strict handling procedures.
"No one opens anything until it's logged."
Daniel nodded.
Hannah pointed toward a cabinet.
"There."
A faded hospital label read:
MATERNITY — PRIVATE CASE FILES.
Detective Ruiz opened it.
Inside were twenty-seven folders.
Most were routine records.
But one contained a photograph.
A newborn boy.
Hannah stared.
The name on the file was Adrian Whitmore.
The date was April 9, 1977.
Daniel frowned.
"My brother?"
Hannah turned the page.
The birth mother was listed as Eleanor Whitmore.
But beneath her name was another document.
A sealed adoption agreement.
Daniel stared at the signature.
His father's.
Then the second signature.
Eleanor's.
He looked at Hannah.
"Adrian was adopted?"
Claire stepped closer.
"What?"
Daniel turned the page.
The biological mother's name appeared beneath the hospital seal.
Margaret Elaine Vale.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Hannah understood.
Margaret wasn't simply the family's attorney.
She was Adrian's biological mother.
Daniel stared at the paperwork.
"Father adopted him?"
Hannah nodded.
"And Eleanor raised him."
Claire looked stunned.
"Then Margaret is my grandmother."
Olivia reached for her hand.
Claire didn't move.
Detective Ruiz continued examining the file.
A second page contained an agreement.
In exchange for surrendering parental rights, Margaret had received a substantial settlement and a permanent position with the Whitmore family's legal advisers.
Hannah felt sick.
"Eleanor bought Adrian."
Daniel shook his head.
"She adopted him."
"She paid his mother to disappear."
Claire stared at the document.
"And then brought her back as the family attorney."
Daniel looked toward the wall.
Twenty-six years earlier, Adrian had fallen in love with Evelyn Bennett.
Evelyn became pregnant.
Margaret discovered she was about to become a grandmother.
And Eleanor discovered another heir.
Two women who had built their lives around one child began fighting over the next generation.
Hannah's voice dropped.
"This was never just about the money."
Daniel nodded.
"It was about control."
Detective Ruiz found another document.
A letter written by Margaret to Eleanor.
Dated June 14, 2000.
Three days before Grace and Claire were born.
You have spent twenty-three years reminding me that Adrian belongs to you.
You may control his inheritance, but you will not control his child.
If you interfere with Evelyn, I will expose the adoption.
Daniel stared.
So did Hannah.
The next letter was Eleanor's response.
If you threaten my family, I will ensure you never see Adrian again.
Claire lowered herself into a chair.
"My grandmother and Eleanor were fighting over me."
Hannah nodded.
"And Grace became part of the same fight."
Detective Ruiz looked toward the back of the folder.
A final page had been tucked behind an old envelope.
It contained a handwritten statement from an administrator.
The statement had never been signed.
But the handwriting was clear.
Margaret Vale authorized the transfer of Evelyn Bennett's infant.
Eleanor Whitmore authorized the transfer of Caroline Whitmore's infant.
Samuel Mercer executed both orders.
Hannah felt a wave of cold certainty.
Two women.
Two babies.
Two separate crimes.
One hospital.
And one physician willing to destroy both families.
Detective Ruiz photographed the statement.
Then Claire spoke.
"What happened to my mother?"
Nobody answered.
She looked at the record of Evelyn's death.
"Was Margaret there?"
Hannah turned the pages.
The answer lay on the next sheet.
A hospital visitor log.
Margaret had entered the maternity ward at 10:43 that morning.
Evelyn was still alive.
She left eleven minutes later.
At 11:18, Evelyn was declared dead.
Claire stared.
"My grandmother was with my mother before she died."
Daniel looked at Detective Ruiz.
"We need to find her."
The detective's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then glanced at Hannah.
"We may have a location."
"Where?"
"Margaret's car was abandoned near the river, but a traffic camera recorded her entering another vehicle."
"Whose?"
Detective Ruiz paused.
"One registered to Eleanor Whitmore."
Daniel stared.
"Where did they go?"
The detective looked at the screen.
"To the old Whitmore estate in Connecticut."
Hannah felt her pulse quicken.
Eleanor and Margaret were together.

After twenty-six years of blackmail, threats, and secrets, the two women had returned to the place where the family had begun.
And neither had told anyone why.
