Chapter 12 - Caroline's Final Message

Daniel listened to the recording in the same room where Caroline had died.

He had refused to change the furniture.

Her favorite armchair still stood beside the window.

Her books remained on the shelves.

A blue scarf hung from the back of the closet door.

For seven years, the room had been a place where grief lived quietly.

Now Hannah stood beside him, holding the flash drive.

Olivia sat near the fireplace.

Rebecca Sloan had arranged for an investigator to preserve a forensic copy before they listened.

Daniel stared at the laptop.

"Play it."

Hannah pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Caroline's voice.

Weak.

Tired.

Unmistakable.

"Daniel."

He closed his eyes.

Caroline paused.

"If you're hearing this, I probably didn't find the courage to tell you while I was alive."

Daniel covered his mouth.

"I know you've spent years trying to protect me from the truth."

A faint breath.

"But there are things a mother knows, even when nobody believes her."

Olivia began crying.

Caroline continued.

"I knew Grace wasn't dead."

Daniel shook his head.

"Oh, Caroline."

"I couldn't prove it."

Her voice trembled.

"But I knew."

Hannah reached for Olivia's hand.

Caroline spoke again.

"I received a letter from a nurse named Sun-hee Park."

Hannah closed her eyes.

"She told me Grace had been moved."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"I went to the hospital."

A pause.

"I found records that didn't match."

Her breathing grew labored.

"And I found an account Eleanor had created in Grace's name."

Daniel looked up.

Caroline continued.

"The account was receiving money."

Rebecca frowned.

Daniel whispered, "What account?"

The recording answered.

"Someone was being paid to keep Grace hidden."

Olivia pressed a hand against her mouth.

Caroline's voice softened.

"Daniel, I know how much you love your mother."

A long pause.

"But she has lied to us."

Daniel began sobbing.

"And I need you to promise me something."

He whispered, "Anything."

"If you find our daughter, don't make her responsible for fixing what was done to us."

Olivia lowered her head.

"She won't remember us."

Caroline's voice broke.

"She may not even want us."

Daniel looked toward Olivia.

"But love her anyway."

Silence.

Then the recording resumed.

"And please, Daniel, don't let grief turn into revenge."

The room fell quiet.

"I want you to find the truth."

"Not because Eleanor deserves punishment."

"Because Grace deserves her own life."

The recording clicked.

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then Caroline spoke one final time.

"If I never get to hold her again, tell her I loved her before I knew her face."

Daniel bent forward.

His shoulders shook.

Olivia walked across the room.

She knelt beside him.

Neither spoke.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her.

And for the first time, he told her about the woman who had loved her from the moment she existed.

The recording contained a second file.

A conversation between Caroline and Eleanor.

The date was three weeks before Caroline's death.

Caroline spoke first.

"I know Grace is alive."

Eleanor answered coldly.

"You need to stop."

"Where is she?"

"Caroline."

"Where is my daughter?"

A pause.

Then Eleanor said something none of them expected.

"I never wanted you to lose her forever."

Caroline's voice rose.

"Then why haven't you brought her home?"

Eleanor began crying.

"Because I can't."

"Why?"

A long silence followed.

Finally, Eleanor whispered.

"Because Margaret has her."

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

Hannah froze.

The recording continued.

"Margaret knows where she is."

Caroline demanded, "Then tell me."

Eleanor sobbed.

"She threatened to destroy Daniel if I tried."

Caroline's voice hardened.

"You let that woman control our child?"

Eleanor whispered.

"I let her control everything."

The recording ended.

Hannah stared at the laptop.

Rebecca immediately called the investigator.

Daniel slowly rose.

His grief had turned into something steadier.

Determination.

"We need to find Margaret."

Rebecca nodded.

"She's already being located."

But twenty minutes later, the investigator called back.

Margaret's apartment was empty.

Her office had been cleared.

Her car was found abandoned near the Hudson River.

And inside the glove compartment lay a note.

IF YOU WANT THE REST OF THE STORY, ASK ELEANOR WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FIRST BABY.

Daniel stared at the words.

Olivia looked toward Hannah.

"The first baby?"

Hannah remembered the two infants in the photograph.

One had been Grace.

One had been Claire.

But now another possibility appeared.

May you like

What if there had been a third child?

And what if the entire investigation had begun with the wrong night?
