Chapter 8 - The Brother Who Stole His Name

For a moment, Richard felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

He stared at the second birth certificate.

Andrew Blackwood.

Victoria Hale.

Oliver Blackwood.

A false family created on paper.

A legal nightmare designed to become real.

Daniel watched him carefully.

"This isn't an authenticated state record."

Richard looked up.

"What?"

"It's a fabricated document submitted through an intermediary. It never became the official birth certificate."

Richard gripped the paper.

"Then why create it?"

"To establish a false paper trail."

"For custody?"

"Potentially. For trust access. For future litigation. For anything they could make a court believe."

Richard closed his eyes.

Oliver had spent years being told his dead mother was unstable.

His stepmother had restrained him.

His uncle had threatened him.

And beneath all of it, someone had been preparing documents that could erase Richard as his father.

A knock interrupted them.

Detective Brooks entered.

"We have a development."

Richard stood.

"Caroline?"

"Not yet."

She placed a photograph on the table.

A private boat docked near Saint Anne's Island.

Three people stood on the deck.

A man.

A woman.

And a little girl.

The image was grainy.

But Richard recognized Victoria's burgundy gown beneath her coat.

"That's her."

Brooks nodded.

"We obtained this from a harbor surveillance system."

Richard pointed toward the child.

"Hope."

"We believe so."

"Where did they go?"

"The boat returned to the mainland forty minutes later."

Richard frowned.

"Without Caroline?"

"We can't confirm who was aboard."

He looked at the photograph again.

"Who's the man?"

Brooks enlarged the image.

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

Dr. Michael Graves.

His family's longtime physician.

The man who had treated Oliver's asthma.

The man who had signed Caroline's death certificate.

Richard slowly sat down.

"He told me she died."

Brooks nodded.

"We've requested his arrest."

Richard stared at the screen.

"He's been coming to my house every month."

"We know."

"He examined Oliver three weeks ago."

Brooks looked at him.

"That's why we're reviewing your son's medical records."

Richard's blood went cold.

"What are you saying?"

"Oliver reported that Victoria sometimes gave him medication before bed."

Richard remembered the boy sleeping through entire weekends.

Victoria had said he was exhausted from school.

He had believed her.

"What medication?"

"We're testing for it."

Richard stood.

"Where's my son?"

"He's safe."

"Take me to him."

Brooks led him down the hall.

Oliver sat beside a child psychologist.

He was holding his drawing.

When he saw Richard, he ran into his arms.

"Daddy!"

Richard crouched.

"I'm here."

Oliver hugged him tightly.

Then whispered:

"Did you find Mommy?"

Richard swallowed.

"Not yet."

"Will you?"

"Yes."

Oliver looked into his eyes.

"Promise?"

Richard hesitated.

He had made too many promises without understanding what they cost.

But this one was different.

"I promise I will do everything I can."

Oliver nodded.

Then he reached into his pocket.

"I forgot something."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"The man."

"What man?"

"The man who came into Mommy's room."

Richard knelt.

"Uncle Andrew?"

Oliver shook his head.

"The doctor."

"Dr. Graves?"

"Yes."

Richard's pulse quickened.

"What did he do?"

"He brought a box."

"What kind of box?"

"A little silver one."

"Did he open it?"

Oliver nodded.

"There were needles."

Richard glanced at Brooks.

She moved closer.

"Did you see what happened next?"

Oliver swallowed.

"Mommy was crying."

Richard's chest tightened.

"What did she say?"

"She said she didn't want to forget anymore."

Silence settled over the room.

Richard stared at his son.

"Forget what?"

Oliver shook his head.

"I don't know."

Then he whispered:

"She said she remembered the fire."

Richard stopped breathing.

The fire.

Caroline's supposed accident.

Brooks crouched beside them.

"Oliver, did your mother say anything else?"

The boy nodded.

"She said the girl in the car was still alive."

Richard looked at Brooks.

"What girl?"

Oliver hesitated.

"The one who was supposed to be Mommy."

Richard felt the room go cold.

A burned vehicle.

A misidentified body.

A closed coffin.

If Caroline hadn't died, someone else had been placed in the car.

But Oliver was saying that person hadn't died either.

Richard looked at Brooks.

"We need to reopen the accident investigation."

"We already have."

"What did you find?"

She hesitated.

"There's an inconsistency in the original medical examiner's records."

Richard's heart hammered.

"Tell me."

"The body recovered from the vehicle was never conclusively identified through DNA."

Richard stared.

"Andrew identified it."

"Yes."

"And the medical examiner accepted that?"

"With supporting dental records that we're now investigating."

Richard grabbed the table.

Brooks continued.

"The remains were cremated after the funeral."

Richard closed his eyes.

He remembered standing at the graveside.

Oliver clinging to his leg.

A small coffin surrounded by white flowers.

He had believed Caroline was inside.

Now even that memory was being taken from him.

"Who was in the coffin?"

Brooks looked at him.

"We don't know."

Then her phone rang.

She stepped away.

Richard heard only fragments.

"Yes."

"Confirmed?"

"When?"

She turned back.

Her face had changed.

"We found Cynthia Bell."

Richard stood.

"Alive?"

Brooks nodded.

"She's been living under a protected identity in Vermont."

Richard exhaled.

"Can we speak to her?"

"We've arranged a secure interview."

"When?"

"Tonight."

Richard looked at Oliver.

The boy was drawing again.

This time he had added a second little figure beside Caroline.

A girl with dark hair.

Richard knelt.

"Who is that?"

"Hope."

"How do you know what she looks like?"

Oliver looked surprised.

"Because I saw her picture."

Richard froze.

"Where?"

"On Victoria's phone."

"What picture?"

Oliver smiled faintly.

"Mommy was holding her."

Richard's eyes filled.

Then Oliver said something that changed everything.

"Mommy looked happy."

Richard stared.

"Happy?"

Oliver nodded.

"She was smiling."

Richard looked at Brooks.

Caroline had been alive for three years.

She had given birth.

She had apparently been drugged and held captive.

But at some point, she'd smiled while holding their daughter.

That meant there had been moments when the truth was within reach.

Moments when someone could have helped her.

And moments when Andrew's control wasn't absolute.

Richard looked down at the boy.

"Buddy, do you remember anything else about that picture?"

Oliver thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

"There was a Christmas tree."

Richard frowned.

"At Saint Anne's?"

"I don't know."

"What else?"

"A big window."

"And?"

Oliver looked up.

"Daddy, there was writing on the wall."

"What writing?"

The boy carefully repeated the words.

"Welcome home, Caroline."

Richard stared.

May you like

Somewhere, Caroline had been held in a place that pretended to be her home.

And whoever had built that illusion had wanted her to believe it.
