Chapter 11 - Midnight at the Cemetery

Rain fell across Blackwood Memorial Cemetery.

The iron gates stood open.

Beyond them, white headstones glistened beneath the security lights.

Richard stepped out of the car at 11:47 p.m.

He wore a dark coat over the bandage on his arm.

Inside his pocket was the document Victoria had demanded.

A pen.

A small flashlight.

And Caroline's locket.

No weapon.

No visible police escort.

But Detective Brooks had not allowed him to come without a plan.

A tactical team monitored the cemetery from outside.

Drones watched the access roads.

Officers tracked nearby vehicles.

And Richard carried a concealed transmitter.

He walked toward Caroline's grave.

The headstone stood beneath an old oak tree.

CAROLINE ELIZABETH BLACKWOOD

BELOVED WIFE AND MOTHER

Richard stopped.

He remembered standing there three years earlier.

Oliver had been four.

The boy had asked why Mommy couldn't come home.

Richard had told him she was in heaven.

Now the words made him feel physically ill.

He knelt beside the stone.

"I'm sorry, Carrie."

Footsteps sounded behind him.

"That's touching."

Richard turned.

Victoria stood beneath a black umbrella.

She wore a fitted charcoal coat.

Her burgundy dress was gone.

Her hair was pinned neatly behind her head.

She looked like a woman arriving for a business meeting.

Not someone who had kidnapped a mother and child.

"Where are they?"

Victoria smiled.

"Straight to business."

Richard stepped forward.

"Where's my family?"

She tilted her head.

"Your family?"

He stared.

"You mean the people you couldn't be bothered to protect?"

Richard clenched his jaw.

Victoria stepped closer.

"Caroline begged you to listen."

He said nothing.

"Oliver begged you to stay home."

Richard's chest tightened.

Victoria smiled.

"And you always had another meeting."

He wanted to deny it.

But he couldn't.

That was what made her words cruel.

She was using the truth to defend something monstrous.

"I failed them."

Victoria blinked.

Richard continued.

"I know that."

Her smile faded slightly.

"But you kidnapped my wife. You terrorized my son. You helped steal three years of my daughter's life."

He stepped closer.

"Those are your crimes."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Give me the papers."

"Show me Caroline."

"After you sign."

"No."

She sighed.

"Richard."

He held out the envelope.

"Proof she's alive. Right now."

Victoria studied him.

Then she pulled out her phone.

A live video appeared.

Caroline sat on the floor of a small room.

Hope slept beside her beneath a blanket.

Richard leaned closer.

"Carrie?"

Caroline looked up.

"Richard?"

He swallowed.

"I'm here."

She began crying.

Victoria tilted the phone away.

"Sign."

Richard looked at her.

"First, tell me why."

Victoria laughed.

"Why?"

"Why did you do this?"

She lowered the umbrella.

Rain touched her hair.

"Because I spent my entire life watching people like you walk into rooms and get everything."

Richard stared.

"My mother cleaned houses. My father disappeared. I worked two jobs through college."

"And that gives you the right to hurt children?"

Victoria's eyes flashed.

"Don't pretend you understand."

"I don't."

She stepped closer.

"I met Andrew when I was twenty-four. He promised me a life I couldn't imagine."

Richard listened.

"He said you were weak. That your wife controlled you. That you would inherit everything while he got leftovers."

"He inherited hundreds of millions."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"To people like Andrew, hundreds of millions is nothing when someone else has more."

Richard looked at her.

"And you believed him."

"I believed I deserved better."

"So you took Caroline's life."

Victoria's expression shifted.

For a moment, something like regret passed across her face.

Then it disappeared.

"She should have walked away."

Richard stared.

"She was pregnant."

Victoria looked away.

"That wasn't part of the plan."

"Hope wasn't part of the plan?"

"No."

Her voice cracked.

Then she straightened.

"Sign the papers."

Richard held the document.

"What happens after I sign?"

"You walk away."

"With my family?"

Victoria hesitated.

Richard noticed.

"That's not what Andrew promised you."

Her expression hardened.

"Don't."

"He's going to kill us."

"Stop talking."

"He doesn't need you after tonight."

Victoria slapped him.

The sound echoed through the cemetery.

Richard barely moved.

He looked at her.

"You know I'm right."

Her hand trembled.

Then headlights swept across the graves.

A black SUV rolled through the gate.

Andrew stepped out.

Two men followed.

One carried a metal case.

Andrew smiled.

"Well done, Victoria."

She turned.

"You said I could handle this."

Andrew ignored her.

He looked at Richard.

"Big brother."

Richard stared.

"Where's Caroline?"

Andrew raised one hand.

The rear door opened.

Dr. Michael Graves emerged.

He helped Caroline out of the vehicle.

She could barely stand.

Her hair hung loosely around her shoulders.

Her face was pale.

But she was alive.

Richard forgot everything.

The rain.

The documents.

The men.

He stepped forward.

"Carrie."

Caroline looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

"Richard."

Andrew raised his hand.

"One more step and she goes back in the car."

Richard stopped.

Caroline began crying.

Andrew smiled.

"Now."

He gestured toward the documents.

"Let's finish what you should've done this morning."

Richard looked at his brother.

"You forged my signature."

Andrew shrugged.

"And now you're going to make it legal."

Richard glanced toward Caroline.

She was trembling.

Her eyes moved from Andrew to the grave behind him.

Then she whispered something.

Richard couldn't hear it.

Andrew stepped closer.

"Sign."

Caroline lifted her head.

"Richard."

Her voice was stronger now.

He looked at her.

She stared directly into his eyes.

"Don't."

Andrew grabbed her arm.

"Quiet."

Caroline winced.

Then she shouted:

"HE'S GOING TO KILL OLIVER!"

Richard felt the world stop.

May you like

Andrew's smile vanished.

And somewhere in the darkness, a police radio crackled.
