Chapter 7 - The First Forgery

Richard had spent his entire life believing signatures made things official.
A contract.
A purchase.
A marriage.
A will.
But now every signature in his family's history looked like a weapon.
He asked his attorney, Daniel Whitmore, to come to the police station.
Daniel arrived just after sunrise.
He had represented Richard for fifteen years.
He was older now.
Gray around the temples.
Usually calm.
Tonight, he looked frightened.
"Richard, what the hell happened?"
Richard put the forged transfer agreement on the table.
"Tell me who prepared this."
Daniel examined it.
His eyes narrowed.
"This isn't the version I drafted."
"What do you mean?"
"The original restricted Andrew's management authority."
Richard leaned forward.
"And this one?"
Daniel turned to the final pages.
"This gives him broad control over your voting shares."
He flipped another page.
Then stopped.
"Oh, God."
"What?"
Daniel pointed to a clause near the bottom.
"Your son's trust."
Richard's stomach dropped.
"What about it?"
"This document attempts to designate Andrew as the controlling trustee if you're incapacitated."
Richard stared at him.
"He planned to have me arrested."
Daniel looked up.
"That wouldn't automatically establish incapacity, but he could use it to start a court challenge."
"And if he succeeded?"
"He could try to control assets held for Oliver."
Richard thought of the poisoned champagne.
The staged collapse.
The forged signature.
Everything fit.
But something still bothered him.
"Why keep Caroline alive?"
Daniel sat back.
"Excuse me?"
Richard told him.
The phone call.
The locket.
The basement.
The daughter.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When Richard finished, the attorney removed his glasses.
"There's something you need to know."
Richard felt his stomach twist.
"What?"
"Caroline contacted me before the accident."
"About what?"
"A trust amendment."
Richard froze.
"She never told me."
"She asked me not to."
"Why?"
Daniel stared at the table.
"She believed Andrew was trying to use Oliver's identity to obtain access to the family trust."
Richard remembered Victoria's threat.
Caroline wasn't the only person who signed away a child.
"What did she find?"
Daniel opened his briefcase.
He removed an old file.
"I kept copies."
Inside were hospital documents from Oliver's birth.
A medical consent form.
An emergency guardianship authorization.
A temporary power of attorney.
Richard recognized his signature on the bottom.
But he didn't recognize the final page.
"What is this?"
Daniel pointed.
"A petition naming Andrew as Oliver's emergency guardian if both parents became unavailable."
Richard frowned.
"I never agreed to that."
"Your signature appears here."
"It's forged."
Daniel said nothing.
Richard looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"Caroline asked me to investigate quietly."
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
"My son was kidnapped in my own house!"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Richard, Caroline believed the hospital documents had been altered."
"Why?"
"Because someone had attempted to record a different legal mother."
Richard stared.
"What?"
Daniel pulled out another page.
It was a preliminary record.
Oliver's name appeared at the top.
Beneath it, the mother's information had been changed.
Not to Caroline.
To a woman named Victoria Hale.
Richard felt the blood drain from his face.
Victoria's maiden name.
He looked at Daniel.
"This isn't possible."
"Caroline discovered it three months after Oliver was born."
Richard remembered those months.
Caroline had been anxious.
Protective.
Refusing to leave Oliver with Andrew.
He thought she'd been overwhelmed by new motherhood.
Now he understood.
"Why would Victoria be listed as Oliver's mother?"
Daniel shook his head.
"We don't know."
Richard stared at the document.
"Was she already involved with Andrew?"
"We believe so."
"Did she know him before Caroline disappeared?"
"Yes."
Richard stood slowly.
"How long?"
Daniel hesitated.
"At least nine years."
Richard stared at him.
Nine years.
Victoria had claimed they first met at a charity gala eighteen months after Caroline's funeral.
Another lie.
Another carefully arranged beginning.
Daniel continued.
"Caroline believed someone had created a parallel identity file for Oliver."
"Why?"
"To manufacture control over his assets if something happened to you."
Richard sat down.
He suddenly remembered Caroline refusing to let Andrew hold Oliver at his first birthday party.
He had thought she was being unreasonable.
He had sided with his brother.
The memory made him sick.
"Where did she get the evidence?"
"From Cynthia Bell."
Richard's head snapped up.
"My father's accountant?"
Daniel nodded.
"She'd been tracking suspicious transactions for years."
"Where is she now?"
Daniel hesitated.
"I don't know."
Richard leaned forward.
"Daniel."
The attorney looked exhausted.
"She disappeared after Arthur died."
"Everybody disappears around my brother."
"Not everybody."
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
He produced a small envelope.
It had Caroline's handwriting on the front.
FOR RICHARD. ONLY IF I DON'T COME HOME.
Richard stared.
"Where did you get that?"
"She gave it to me the week before the accident."
Richard's voice shook.
"And you kept it?"
"She told me to wait until someone could safely verify what happened."
"You knew she might be in danger."
"I tried to contact her. Then the accident happened. Andrew produced a death certificate, and your family threatened litigation when I questioned it."
Richard stood so quickly the chair struck the wall.
"You should have told me!"
Daniel didn't defend himself.
"Yes."
The simple admission stopped Richard.
Daniel looked down.
"I should have."
Richard took the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Richard,
If you're reading this, I failed to protect our son.
I tried to tell you.
I begged you to look at the evidence.
You thought I was afraid of your brother because I didn't understand business.
But this was never about business.
Richard's hands trembled.
He continued.
Andrew wants Oliver because he believes our son is the key to something your father hid.
And Victoria knows why.
Please don't let them convince you I'm sick.
Please don't let them take him.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
IF I DISAPPEAR, CHECK THE SECOND BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
Richard looked up.
"Second birth certificate?"
Daniel nodded grimly.
"I found one."
"Whose?"
The attorney swallowed.
"Oliver's."
Richard stared.
Daniel slid another document across the table.
The child was listed as born on the same date.
At the same hospital.
To a different mother.
May you like
And the father's name was not Richard Blackwood.
It was Andrew Blackwood.
