Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the Door

Khalid dragged Kareem downstairs in handcuffs.
By dawn, loyal units had regained control of the palace.
General Fahad was arrested.
Six senior officers surrendered.
The coup collapsed as quickly as it had begun.
But Maya barely noticed.
One sentence stayed in her head.
Omar Haddad is inside this palace.
Samir confronted Kareem in the interrogation room.
“Where?”
Kareem smiled.
Samir slammed both hands on the table.
“WHERE IS MY BROTHER?”
Kareem leaned forward.
“You’ve spoken to him hundreds of times.”
Maya watched from behind the glass.
Khalid stood beside her.
“Who?”
Maya thought of everyone.
Guards.
Drivers.
Gardeners.
Clerks.
Doctors.
Then something struck her.
The birthday cards Amina had sent.
Someone intercepted them.
Someone who watched Maya but never harmed her.
Someone who had quietly approved her palace employment three years earlier.
Maya turned.
“Who hired me?”
Khalid frowned.
“Human resources.”
“No. Who approved my security clearance?”
He pulled up the archived record.
His face changed.
“Rafiq.”
Maya’s chest tightened.
Security Chief Rafiq.
The man who had served Khalid for fifteen years.
The man who seemed to recognize the pendant.
The man Khalid had suspected.
“Where is he?”
A guard answered.
“Missing.”
They ran to Rafiq’s quarters.
Empty.
One drawer stood open.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Maya as a child.
At school.
At eighteen.
At her mother’s grave.
Maya picked one up.
“He watched me.”
Khalid searched the desk.
Found letters.
Birthday cards.
Every card Amina said she had sent.
None opened.
Maya covered her mouth.
“He kept them.”
Khalid found a final envelope.
For Maya.
She opened it.
If you are reading this, then Kareem finally forced the truth into daylight.
I am sorry I was never brave enough to stand in it.
Your father.
Maya dropped the letter.
“No.”
The balcony door opened behind them.
Rafiq stood outside.
He looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Human.
Maya stared.
“Omar?”
His eyes filled.
“My name was Omar once.”
Samir entered behind them.
He stopped.
Thirty years seemed to fall from his face.
“Omar?”
Rafiq looked at him.
“Hello, brother.”
Samir crossed the room and hit him.
Hard.
Rafiq took the punch.
Samir hit him again.
Then grabbed him and pulled him into an embrace.
Both men cried.
Maya could barely breathe.
Her father stood ten feet away.
A stranger she had passed in palace corridors for three years.
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me clean floors.”
“Yes.”
“You never said anything.”
“I couldn’t.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Rafiq stepped closer.
“Kareem believed I was dead for years. When I returned under another identity, I worked my way into palace security to protect Khalid.”
Khalid stared at him.
“You were beside me for fifteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And never told me you were my father.”
Maya looked between them.
Rafiq nodded.
“I was protecting both of you.”
Khalid’s voice cracked.
“You were my father.”
“In blood.”
“You trained me.”
“Yes.”
“You taught me to shoot.”
“Yes.”
“You gave a speech at my wedding.”
Rafiq almost smiled.
“Yes.”
“And you let me call you Rafiq.”
His voice broke.
“I didn’t think I deserved anything else.”
Khalid punched him.
Not hard.
Then pulled him into an embrace.
Maya turned away, crying.
Rafiq looked at her.
“Maya.”
She wiped her face.
“You don’t get an easy hug.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to tell me you did it all for me and make everything okay.”
“I know.”
“You missed every birthday.”
“I watched every one I could.”
“That makes it worse.”
“I know.”
She hated how gently he said it.
Rafiq reached into his pocket.
He removed a tiny silver bracelet.
A falcon.
Three stars.
“Mariam made two.”
Maya stared.
“One for Khalid’s future.”
He looked at Khalid.
“And one for yours.”
Maya took it.
Her fingers shook.
Before anyone could speak, an alarm sounded.
Khalid checked his phone.
A guard shouted from the corridor.
“Your Highness!”
“What?”
“Kareem escaped interrogation.”
Everyone froze.
“How?”
“We don’t know.”
Another guard ran in.
“There’s smoke in the west wing.”
Maya’s heart stopped.
Her mother.
“Amina.”
They ran.
Fire rolled through the corridor.
Khalid grabbed an extinguisher.
Maya screamed her mother’s name.
Amina appeared through the smoke.
“Maya!”
Maya ran toward her.
Then stopped.
Kareem stepped out behind Amina.
A gun pressed against her back.
“Enough family reunions,” he said.
May you like
His finger tightened around the trigger.
“Let’s finish what started twenty-six years ago.”
