Chapter 11 - The Coup

By noon, the palace gates were surrounded.
Not by enemies.
By royal guards.
That made it worse.
Khalid watched from the armored vehicle as soldiers checked every car entering the compound.
“Those are second brigade uniforms,” he said.
Laila frowned.
“Who commands them?”
“General Fahad.”
Samir cursed softly.
“Kareem’s nephew.”
Maya looked at Khalid.
“So this is a coup?”
“Not yet.”
“What does ‘not yet’ mean?”
“It means they’re still pretending it’s legal.”
They entered through a service tunnel.
Khalid refused to walk into the council chamber until Maya and Amina were hidden in a secure apartment.
Maya stopped him.
“No.”
“You’re staying here.”
“I spent twenty-six years hidden.”
“This is different.”
“It feels exactly the same.”
Khalid stared at her.
Maya stepped closer.
“Kareem’s entire plan depends on turning me into a rumor.”
“He’ll destroy you in public.”
“Then I’ll be public.”
“Maya—”
“I’m done disappearing because powerful men are afraid of what I prove.”
Amina touched her shoulder.
“Maya.”
She turned.
Amina looked terrified.
“But she’s right,” Laila said.
Khalid glared at his wife.
“Not helping.”
Laila crossed her arms.
“For once in our marriage, I’m not trying to.”
Twenty minutes later, the council chamber exploded into shouting when Maya entered behind Khalid.
Kareem stood at the central table.
Sixty-nine years old.
Silver hair.
Calm eyes.
A man who had spent four decades learning how to look innocent.
Princess Noura sat beside him.
General Fahad stood near the door.
Kareem smiled.
“So the maid joins us.”
Maya replied, “Apparently I’m more interesting than your agenda.”
Several council members hid smiles.
Khalid sat.
“Let’s stop pretending. You tried to kill Samir.”
Kareem sighed.
“Serious accusations from a man who spent the morning chasing family ghosts.”
Khalid threw copies of the bank records onto the table.
Kareem’s smile weakened.
“Humanitarian accounts. Shell companies. Payments to armed intermediaries.”
“Fabricated.”
“We have independent banking confirmations.”
That was a bluff.
But Kareem didn’t know it.
Noura leaned forward.
“Even if those records are real, they prove financial misconduct. Not murder.”
Maya placed Mariam’s letter on the table.
Noura stared at it.
Khalid saw.
“Recognize the handwriting?”
Noura said nothing.
Kareem looked at Maya.
“You have no idea what kind of people you’re standing beside.”
Maya answered, “I spent three years cleaning your offices. I know exactly how people like you treat anyone you think is invisible.”
Kareem’s jaw tightened.
She continued.
“You don’t lower your voice around servants.”
A few heads turned.
Kareem stared.
Maya remembered.
Three months earlier.
Kareem in a corridor.
Speaking to General Fahad.
“Replacement needs to happen before winter.”
She had thought they were discussing staff.
Now she understood.
“You said Khalid had become difficult to control.”
Kareem’s expression changed.
General Fahad moved.
Maya pointed at him.
“And you told Kareem the guard rotations were ready.”
The room erupted.
Fahad shouted, “She’s lying!”
Maya looked at Khalid.
“I heard them.”
Kareem slammed his palm on the table.
“This woman is a criminal!”
Khalid smiled.
“Then arrest her.”
Everyone went silent.
Kareem stared.
Khalid continued.
“Go ahead.”
General Fahad stepped toward Maya.
Khalid’s personal guards raised their weapons.
The room froze.
Khalid leaned back.
“Make your choice carefully, General.”
Fahad stopped.
Kareem looked around the chamber.
Then smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
He removed a folder from his briefcase.
Inside was a DNA report.
He slid it across the table.
“We already tested her.”
Maya froze.
Samir whispered, “How?”
Kareem smiled.
“Hair from her staff locker.”
Khalid opened the report.
Maya watched his eyes.
“What?”
He said nothing.
“What does it say?”
Khalid looked at her.
“The test says you have no biological connection to Princess Mariam.”
Silence.
Maya felt the floor disappear beneath her.
Amina stared at Kareem.
“That’s impossible.”
Kareem smiled.
“Your entire little story collapses.”
Samir grabbed the report.
“This lab belongs to the government.”
“And?”
“It can be controlled.”
Kareem laughed.
“Of course. Every piece of evidence you dislike is corrupted.”
Maya looked at Khalid.
“Samir warned us.”
Khalid nodded slowly.
“Which is why I ordered another test this morning.”
Kareem’s smile disappeared.
Khalid pulled out his phone.
“Three independent laboratories.”
The first result had arrived.
He opened it.
His face changed.
Maya gripped the table.
“Well?”
Khalid looked at her.
“You are Mariam’s daughter.”
Gasps filled the chamber.
Kareem stood.
“That proves nothing about succession!”
“I’m not asking for a throne,” Maya snapped.
Khalid’s phone buzzed again.
Second laboratory.
He opened it.
Then froze.
Maya saw confusion in his eyes.
“What now?”
He looked at Samir.
Then at Amina.
“This test compared Maya’s DNA with mine.”
Maya held her breath.
Khalid swallowed.
“It says we share enough DNA to be half siblings.”
The room went silent.
Maya whispered, “But you said my father was Tariq.”
Amina turned white.
Samir slowly stood.
Khalid looked at them.
“If we have the same biological father…”
His voice became dangerous.
“Then Tariq wasn’t Maya’s father.”
May you like
He stared at Samir.
“Omar was.”
