Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Last Lie

Harlan survived.

Adrian did too.

Police arrested Richard Bellamy before sunrise.

Detective Pike was taken into custody that afternoon.

Three executives at North Lake Behavioral Research were arrested by evening.

Vanessa remained missing.

Emma sat beside Adrian in the hospital when Marcus entered.

“We found her.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

“Where?”

“Vale estate.”

Emma frowned.

“She went back?”

Marcus nodded.

“Walked through the front gate.”

“Why?”

“She says she’ll only speak to Emma.”

Emma stared.

“Me?”

Adrian sat higher.

“No.”

Emma turned.

“You don’t get to do that.”

“She tried to frame you.”

“She also knows something.”

“Marcus can question her.”

“Vanessa won’t talk to Marcus.”

“She may kill you.”

Emma looked at his bandaged shoulder.

“You were shot twelve hours ago.”

“That strengthens my argument.”

“It weakens your authority.”

Marcus looked between them.

“I can come back.”

“No,” both said.

Emma almost smiled.

Adrian sighed.

“Fine.”

They returned to the estate under heavy security.

Vanessa sat alone in the library.

No makeup.

Hair loose.

Same clothes from the previous night.

She looked nothing like Adrian’s glamorous fiancée.

She looked tired.

Human.

Emma sat opposite her.

Adrian remained behind the one-way glass in the adjoining study despite orders from his doctor.

Vanessa knew.

“I can feel him watching.”

Emma said nothing.

Vanessa looked at the photograph on the table.

“You hate me.”

“I don’t know you well enough.”

Vanessa smiled.

“That’s very Adrian.”

“No.”

Emma shook her head.

“That’s me.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“What do you want?”

“You asked for me.”

“I wanted to tell you about the bracelet.”

“The one I supposedly stole?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Vanessa reached into her pocket.

A diamond bracelet.

She placed it on the table.

Emma stared.

“You had it.”

“Yes.”

“You framed me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I found your photograph.”

Emma waited.

Vanessa’s eyes lowered.

“I recognized the necklace.”

“From Eleanor?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She wore it in every old portrait.”

Emma nodded.

Vanessa continued.

“When I saw it on Lucy, I knew exactly who she was.”

“And you fired me.”

“I panicked.”

“You kicked my belongings across the floor.”

“I needed you gone before Adrian saw the picture.”

“Why?”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Because I knew him.”

Emma leaned back.

“No.”

“You knew what losing power would do to your plans.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You think this was about money?”

“Wasn’t it?”

“Not at first.”

Emma stayed silent.

Vanessa looked toward the hidden glass.

“I loved Adrian when I was seventeen.”

Emma believed her.

That was the disturbing part.

“I watched his mother die.”

“She didn’t die.”

“We thought she had.”

“You knew later.”

“Years later.”

“And said nothing.”

“Yes.”

“Love has a strange definition in your family.”

Vanessa flinched.

Emma continued.

“You knew he had a sister.”

“Yes.”

“You knew his father’s death wasn’t an accident.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the company he inherited was built on cover-ups.”

“Yes.”

“And you were going to marry him without telling him any of it.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Then don’t tell me this was love.”

Vanessa whispered, “You don’t understand what fear does.”

Emma stared.

“My mother died because people were afraid.”

Vanessa looked down.

That ended the excuse.

After a moment she said, “There is another will.”

Emma’s pulse jumped.

“Richard said fifty-one percent.”

“My father never saw the final document.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Daniel Price showed me.”

Emma froze.

“When?”

“The night Arthur died.”

“Before Price went to the garage?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He was terrified.”

“What did the will say?”

“Arthur split his voting shares.”

“How?”

“Forty percent to Adrian.”

Emma frowned.

“And Lucy?”

“Forty percent.”

“That’s eighty.”

“The remaining twenty went into a trust.”

“For whom?”

Vanessa looked through the glass.

“For Eleanor.”

Emma stared.

“She was legally dead.”

“Arthur planned to restore her identity.”

Emma understood.

Arthur’s final plan had not been to hand control to Lucy.

It had been to dismantle his own monopoly over the family.

Adrian.

Lucy.

Eleanor.

Balance.

Maybe redemption.

Too late.

“Where is the will?”

“I don’t know.”

“Vanessa.”

“I don’t.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because someone does.”

“Who?”

Vanessa looked at Emma.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

Emma’s breath caught.

“She knows where it is?”

“She was there when Arthur signed it.”

“Why didn’t she tell us?”

“Because the will contains a clause.”

“What clause?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“If Arthur’s death involved criminal conduct by any beneficiary, that beneficiary loses their shares.”

Emma frowned.

“None of them killed him.”

“Not directly.”

Emma understood.

Eleanor was involved in the confrontation.

Adrian had been falsely linked through credentials.

Lucy’s existence had triggered the conflict.

A skilled lawyer could challenge everyone.

“Who inherits if they’re disqualified?”

Vanessa looked sick.

“The Vale Foundation.”

Emma stared.

“Who controls it?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Emma already knew.

“Richard.”

Vanessa nodded.

For years Richard Bellamy had hidden the final will because exposing it could destroy him.

Yet if he could establish beneficiary misconduct, it might give him control.

No wonder every side had buried different evidence.

Emma asked, “Why are you telling me now?”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“Because my father used me.”

Emma almost laughed.

“So now truth is useful.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

Vanessa nodded.

Emma stood.

Vanessa said, “There’s more.”

Emma stopped.

“Of course there is.”

Vanessa looked toward the one-way glass.

“Adrian’s credentials weren’t only used by Daniel Price.”

Emma sat again.

“Who else?”

Vanessa whispered, “Me.”

Emma stared.

“I approved two transfers.”

“How much?”

“Six million.”

“Where?”

“To North Lake.”

“Why?”

“My father told me they were settlement payments.”

“Did you know what North Lake was?”

“No.”

“Later?”

“Yes.”

“And you covered it up.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s tears returned.

“I thought if Adrian discovered I had used his credentials, he would hate me.”

Emma’s expression remained cold.

“So you let him believe his father suspected him.”

“Yes.”

“You let Arthur die believing his son might be involved.”

“Yes.”

“You helped destroy evidence.”

“Yes.”

Emma stood.

“That’s why you’re here.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I’m going to confess.”

Emma stopped at the door.

“You should.”

Vanessa whispered, “Do you think he’ll ever forgive me?”

Emma turned.

“No.”

Vanessa flinched.

Emma continued.

“But forgiveness isn’t the same as freedom.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means someday he may stop carrying what you did.”

Emma opened the door.

“That doesn’t mean you get him back.”

Adrian stood in the study.

He had heard everything.

Vanessa saw him.

Her face collapsed.

“Adrian.”

He walked into the library.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then he removed the engagement ring from his pocket.

Emma had not known he carried it.

He placed it beside Vanessa’s bracelet.

“You should have trusted me with the truth.”

Vanessa cried.

“I was afraid I’d lose you.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“You lost me every time you decided I was too weak to survive reality.”

He walked away.

May you like

Vanessa did not call after him.

This time, she understood there was nothing left to save.
