Chapter 10 - Ridgeway House

The old house stood two miles from the bridge where Arthur Vale died.
Rain had started again.
Of course it had.
Emma stared through the SUV windshield at boarded windows and collapsing brick.
“You stay behind me,” Adrian said.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Emma.”
“My sister is inside.”
“And if you get shot, what do I tell her?”
“That I didn’t hide behind you.”
His jaw tightened.
Eleanor spoke from the back seat.
“Both of you stop.”
They turned.
She looked almost amused.
“You sound married.”
Neither answered.
Marcus hid a smile.
The moment disappeared when a light switched on upstairs.
One blink.
Then off.
Signal.
Marcus’s team moved.
They cut through a side entrance.
No one inside.
First floor empty.
Second floor.
A chair.
Rope.
Blood.
Emma’s heart stopped.
“Lucy?”
No answer.
Then a muffled sound.
Closet.
Marcus opened it.
Carol Carter fell forward.
Emma caught her aunt.
“Aunt Carol.”
“Lucy.”
Carol’s eyes opened.
“He took Lucy.”
“Where?”
“Basement.”
Emma ran.
Adrian swore and followed.
The basement door had been reinforced.
Marcus breached it.
Dark corridor.
Medical equipment.
Old treatment rooms.
Then Lucy screamed.
Emma lost all caution.
“Lucy!”
She ran toward the sound.
A man stepped into the corridor.
Michael Harlan.
Forties.
Lean.
Dark blue jacket.
The thread.
He held a gun against Lucy’s head.
Emma stopped.
Lucy’s eyes filled.
“Emma.”
“I’m here.”
Harlan smiled.
“So is Arthur’s other mistake.”
Adrian moved into view.
Harlan’s eyes shifted.
“Mr. Vale.”
“Let her go.”
“No.”
“You want Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“She’s not here.”
Harlan smiled.
“You’re a terrible liar.”
Eleanor stepped forward behind them.
Adrian spun.
“I told you to stay outside.”
“I spent eight years following other people’s orders.”
She looked at Michael.
“I’m finished.”
Harlan’s expression changed.
Hatred.
“You killed my father.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Arthur did not.”
“I said you.”
Emma frowned.
Eleanor became still.
“What?”
Harlan’s gun remained at Lucy’s head.
“My father went to you after Sarah Carter recorded him.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“He begged me for help.”
“You gave him pills.”
“Sedatives.”
“He died that night.”
Eleanor stared.
“I didn’t know.”
“Everyone says that.”
Harlan’s voice broke.
“I didn’t know.”
“I was protecting the company.”
“I was protecting my child.”
Emma watched him unravel.
Michael Harlan had built his life from inherited lies.
Just like Adrian.
Just like Lucy.
He looked at Emma.
“Your mother started everything.”
Emma’s fear turned to anger.
“My mother found what your father was doing.”
“She blackmailed him.”
“No.”
“She destroyed him.”
“She exposed him.”
Harlan pressed the gun harder against Lucy.
“Stop.”
Lucy whimpered.
Emma immediately softened.
“Okay.”
Adrian spoke.
“What do you want?”
“The recording.”
“We don’t have it.”
“Your mother knows where.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
Everyone looked at her.
Emma whispered, “You said the bank box.”
“That is where Sarah placed the first copy.”
“First?”
Eleanor looked at Harlan.
“The second is here.”
Harlan stared.
“What?”
Eleanor pointed toward the basement wall.
“Your father hid it.”
Michael’s face changed.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“He knew Sarah had recorded him.”
“Yes.”
“He searched for the tape.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He found it.”
Emma frowned.
“Then why keep it?”
Eleanor looked at Michael.
“Because there was something on that recording he wanted you to hear someday.”
Harlan’s hand trembled.
“No.”
Eleanor continued.
“Your father knew Richard was using him.”
“He volunteered.”
“No.”
“He believed in the research.”
“At first.”
“Stop.”
“He realized people were being hurt.”
“Stop.”
“He wanted out.”
“Stop!”
Lucy cried.
Emma took one step.
Harlan swung the gun toward her.
Adrian moved in front of Emma.
“Don’t.”
Harlan stared at him.
“You think you’re brave because you inherited money.”
Adrian’s expression remained calm.
“No.”
“You’re Arthur Vale’s son.”
“Yes.”
“Do you know how many lives your family ruined?”
“More every hour.”
Harlan blinked.
Adrian continued.
“That’s why this ends now.”
“You don’t get to end it.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“But Lucy does.”
Harlan glanced toward the girl.
That was enough.
Lucy bit his hand.
Hard.
He screamed.
The gun shifted.
Emma ran.
Adrian tackled Harlan.
A shot exploded.
Emma threw herself over Lucy.
Marcus entered.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Emma held Lucy so tightly the girl gasped.
“Emma.”
“I’m here.”
“You’re crushing me.”
Emma laughed and cried at the same time.
“Sorry.”
Lucy clung to her.
Across the room, Adrian lay on the floor.
Emma’s heart stopped.
“Adrian.”
Blood spread across his white shirt.
She handed Lucy to Carol, who had reached the basement with security.
Emma crawled to him.
“No.”
Adrian opened his eyes.
“You’re loud.”
Relief nearly knocked her unconscious.
“Where are you hit?”
“Shoulder.”
Marcus pressed a cloth against the wound.
“Through and through.”
Emma grabbed Adrian’s hand.
He looked at her.
“Lucy?”
“Safe.”
He closed his eyes.
“Good.”
Across the room, Harlan had been restrained.
Eleanor stood over him.
“Where is the tape?” he demanded.
She looked toward an old medicine cabinet.
“Behind the wall.”
Marcus found it ten minutes later.
A cassette.
Old.
Dusty.
Labeled only with a date.
Three years before Arthur’s death.
They played it in the ambulance.
Sarah Carter’s voice came first.
Calm.
Young.
Emma cried at the sound.
Then Eleanor.
Then Dr. Harlan.
His confession was exactly as described.
Medication manipulation.
Richard’s payments.
Forged records.
Unapproved trials.
Then Sarah asked one final question.
“Who requested access to my hospital medication?”
Dr. Harlan hesitated.
A chair moved.
Then he said the name.
“Daniel Price.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Not Vanessa.
Not Richard.
Price.
Sarah had discovered his laundering operation.
He had silenced her.
Years later Arthur discovered him.
Price stabbed Arthur.
Then died fighting him on Ridgeway Bridge.
The worst crimes had been committed by a man legally dead for years.
But the cover-up belonged to everyone.
Richard.
Vanessa.
Arthur.
Detective Pike.
The clinic.
Lawyers.
Executives.
Each had protected one lie until it became a wall.
Lucy sat beside Emma.
She heard enough to understand that something enormous had happened.
Not enough to understand who she was.
She looked at Adrian on the stretcher.
“Who is he?”
Emma opened her mouth.
Nothing came.
Adrian answered.
“I’m Adrian.”
Lucy looked at him.
“I know.”
He blinked.
“You do?”
“You’re the printer guy.”
Emma covered her face.
Even wounded, Adrian laughed.
Lucy frowned.
“You don’t make printers?”
“No.”
She looked at Emma suspiciously.
Emma said, “We need to talk.”
Lucy crossed her arms.
“That is never a good sentence.”
Adrian smiled.
Emma looked at him.
Then at Eleanor.
Then at her aunt.
The truth could not be hidden anymore.
She touched Lucy’s cheek.
“Your father’s name was Arthur Vale.”
Lucy stopped moving.
Her eyes went toward Adrian.
Then back to Emma.
“No.”
Emma began crying again.
“Yes.”
Lucy stared at Adrian.
He swallowed.
“I’m your brother.”
Lucy did not speak.
For almost ten seconds, no one did.
Then she looked at the blood on his shirt.
“You got shot?”
He nodded.
“For me?”
Adrian looked at Emma.
Then back at Lucy.
“Yes.”
Lucy’s lower lip trembled.
“You’re stupid.”
Adrian smiled.
“I’ve been told.”
Lucy stepped closer.
May you like
Then carefully took his hand.
And for the first time in thirteen years, Arthur Vale’s two children met without a lie standing between them.
