Chapter 14 - THE HOSPITAL WHERE NOAH DIED

St. Catherine’s old surgical wing had been closed for renovations.
At 2:18 a.m., the building was supposed to be empty.
It wasn’t.
Celeste dragged Noah through Operating Room Four.
“Walk.”
“My arm hurts.”
“Keep moving.”
Dr. Leonard Pike stood beside a surgical table.
He looked twenty years older than the man Daniel remembered.
Nervous.
Sweating.
“What is he doing here?” Pike demanded.
Celeste pushed Noah toward him.
“Andrew’s orders.”
“I said I was done.”
“You were done three years ago.”
Pike stared at Noah.
“I kept my mouth shut.”
“You also kept records.”
Pike’s face changed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Noah slowly reached into his sleeve.
The recorder wasn’t there.
He remembered Hannah catching it.
Good.
Celeste opened cabinets.
“Where are Evelyn’s files?”
“I destroyed them.”
“No, you didn’t.”
Pike backed away.
“What does Andrew even want now?”
The operating room door opened.
Andrew walked in.
“Peace and quiet.”
Pike froze.
Andrew raised his gun.
“No—”
The shot cracked.
Pike fell.
Noah screamed.
Celeste spun around.
“You didn’t have to do that!”
“He was a liability.”
“He was the only doctor who knew—”
“Exactly.”
Noah crawled behind the surgical table.
Andrew looked at Celeste.
“Find the files.”
“And the boy?”
Andrew didn’t answer.
Celeste understood.
Her face drained.
“No.”
Andrew stared at her.
“You’re developing a conscience now?”
“He’s a child.”
“He was a child when you drugged him.”
“I never agreed to kill him.”
“You agreed to everything else.”
Celeste looked toward Noah.
For the first time, fear replaced cruelty in her eyes.
Andrew smiled.
“You actually started caring about him.”
“No.”
“You did.”
Celeste whispered, “I kept him alive.”
“So did Vale. Look how that worked out.”
Outside the surgical wing, Daniel, Hannah, and Ruiz entered through a maintenance corridor.
Hannah held up the recorder.
A tiny symbol blinked on its screen.
LIVE TRANSMISSION.
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Hannah plugged an earpiece into Ruiz’s phone.
Voices came through.
Andrew.
Celeste.
Noah had turned on remote mode before dropping the recorder.
The device in Hannah’s hand was receiving audio from a tiny transmitter sewn into Noah’s jacket.
Daniel heard Andrew say:
“We end this tonight.”
He ran.
Ruiz grabbed him.
“Wait.”
“That’s my son.”
“We need positions.”
A gunshot echoed.
Daniel stopped waiting.
He kicked open the stairwell door.
“NOAH!”
Andrew turned.
Daniel tackled him.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Celeste screamed.
Ruiz entered.
“DROP IT!”
Andrew slammed Daniel into a metal cart.
Hannah rushed toward Noah.
Celeste grabbed a syringe from Pike’s tray.
She caught Hannah around the neck.
“Stay back!”
The syringe hovered against Hannah’s skin.
Noah stared at it.
He recognized the medication.
“That makes people sleep.”
Celeste’s hand shook.
Hannah whispered, “You don’t have to do this.”
“You don’t know what I have to do.”
“I know you’re scared of Andrew.”
Celeste’s eyes flashed.
“I’m not scared of him.”
Andrew shouted from across the room:
“DO IT!”
Celeste looked at him.
Something changed.
Years of fear.
Control.
Greed.
Resentment.
All of it seemed to hit her at once.
She turned the syringe away from Hannah.
Andrew fired at her.
Daniel shoved his brother’s arm.
The bullet hit Celeste’s shoulder.
She dropped.
Ruiz kicked Andrew’s gun away.
Andrew punched her.
Daniel grabbed him from behind.
They crashed into the operating table.
Noah ran to Hannah.
Andrew reached for a scalpel.
Daniel saw it too late.
Andrew swung.
Noah screamed.
Hannah grabbed a steel tray and smashed Andrew across the face.
The scalpel fell.
Ruiz tackled him.
Two officers stormed the room.
Andrew was finally pinned to the floor.
Celeste lay bleeding beside the cabinets.
Daniel grabbed Noah.
“I’m here.”
Noah buried his face in his chest.
“You came.”
“I’ll always come.”
Andrew laughed from the floor.
Everyone looked at him.
“You still lose.”
Daniel stared.
Andrew smiled through blood.
“Those recordings are nothing. Celeste will deny it. Grant is dead. Vale is dead. Pike is dead.”
Hannah held up Noah’s recorder.
“No.”
Andrew’s smile faded.
Hannah pressed PLAY.
His voice filled the operating room.
Clear as day.
“He was an asset worth billions.”
Then another line.
“We created a simpler reality.”
Then:
“I preserved leverage.”
Ruiz looked at Andrew.
“That’s going to sound great for a jury.”
Andrew’s face collapsed.
Celeste began laughing weakly from the floor.
“You idiot.”
Andrew screamed at her.
“SHUT UP!”
Celeste looked at Ruiz.
“You want the files?”
Ruiz crouched beside her.
“Where?”
Celeste nodded toward the floor beneath the surgical table.
“Evelyn hid them where Pike would never check.”
Officers pulled up an old floor panel.
Inside sat three sealed evidence bags.
Financial records.
Medical records.
And a handwritten confession from Margaret Vale.
Daniel stared at them.
It was finally over.
Then Noah tugged his sleeve.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“There’s one more recording.”
Daniel looked down.
“What recording?”
Noah’s eyes filled with tears.
“One I never listened to.”

He held up a file marked:
MOM — FOR NOAH.
