Chapter 10 - THE BLUE HOUSE

Ruiz arrived at the lake house first.
The front door was open.
No Margaret Vale.
No movement.
Daniel parked half a mile away and came through the trees with Hannah.
Ruiz nearly exploded when she saw him.
“What part of stay home was confusing?”
“The part where my dead wife’s photographs are inside.”
“You brought the child?”
“No.”
Hannah looked away.
Ruiz narrowed her eyes.
“No.”
A small voice came from behind Daniel.
“I stayed low.”
Noah stepped from behind a tree.
Ruiz stared at Daniel.
Daniel sighed.
“He climbed into the back of the SUV.”
“You’re supposed to be one of the smartest men in America.”
“People exaggerate.”
Ruiz muttered something under her breath.
Noah pointed toward the garage.
“Key’s under the frog.”
An officer lifted a ceramic frog beside the door.
A key was underneath.
Ruiz stared at Noah.
“You weren’t kidding.”
Inside, the house smelled of bleach and medicine.
No family photos.
No decorations.
Just clean surfaces and locked doors.
Noah walked slowly.
“I slept upstairs.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
Noah stopped beside a pantry.
“Not there.”
He pushed a panel.
A hidden staircase appeared.
Ruiz swore quietly.
They descended.
The basement was larger than the house.
Medical beds.
IV stands.
Cabinets full of sedatives.
And photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Daniel approached the wall.
Evelyn.
Celeste.
Andrew.
Dr. Pike.
Noah at age four.
Noah at five.
Noah sleeping.
Noah crying.
Noah staring directly into the camera.
Daniel had to grip the table.
Hannah found an old laptop.
Ruiz called for forensics.
Daniel opened a filing cabinet.
Mercer Global documents.
Shell companies.
Wire transfers.
He recognized Andrew’s signature.
Millions moved offshore.
Then tens of millions.
Then hundreds.
“This wasn’t about Noah’s trust,” Daniel said.
Ruiz looked over.
“No.”
Daniel pointed at the files.
“They’ve been stealing from the company for years.”
Hannah found a photograph tucked inside a ledger.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
It showed Evelyn standing outside the lake house.
Alive.
Date stamped three days before her death.
On the back, she had written:
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, CHECK THE BLUE HOUSE.
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“She knew.”
Noah stood beside him.
“Mom came here?”
“Looks like it.”
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Ruiz raised her weapon.
“Police! Show yourself!”
Footsteps.
An officer ran up.
A woman screamed.
Seconds later, two cops dragged Margaret Vale down the stairs.
She was older now.
Thin.
Gray-haired.
Noah immediately hid behind Daniel.
Vale saw him.
Her expression collapsed.
“You got out.”
Daniel lunged.
Ruiz stopped him.
“Don’t.”
Daniel pointed at Vale.
“You drugged my son.”
Vale started crying.
“I kept him alive.”
“You kept him in a WALL!”
“No. Celeste moved him there last week.”
“Why?”
“Because Andrew was coming.”
Noah clung to Daniel.
Vale looked at the recorder in his hand.
“Oh, Noah.”
Her face turned terrified.
“What did you record?”
Ruiz stepped closer.
“Everything.”
Vale shook her head violently.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Your brother isn’t trying to hide the kidnapping anymore.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What is he trying to do?”
Vale whispered:
“He’s trying to kill everyone who knows why Evelyn really died.”
Then a red light began blinking on the basement wall.
Vale looked up.
Her face went white.
“No.”
Ruiz asked, “What?”
Vale backed toward the stairs.
May you like
“Everybody run.”
A timer on the wall reached ten seconds.
