Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE DIEDMarcus killed the lights.

“Back door. Now.”
Ethan grabbed the envelope.
Lena helped Daniel stand.
“No.”
Daniel pushed her hand away.
“You can’t move me.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“You have to.”
Outside, footsteps crossed gravel.
Marcus peered through the curtain.
“Three men.”
Ethan recognized one.
Gray jacket.
Grand Central.
Daniel whispered, “Study passage.”
“What?”
“Bookshelf. Red volume.”
Ethan yanked a red leather book.
The shelf clicked.
A narrow doorway opened.
Lena stared.
“You rich people are ridiculous.”
“Move.”
They entered.
Daniel stayed behind.
Lena grabbed his hand.
“Come with us.”
He shook his head.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“Everything.”
The door closed between them.
They moved through a dark corridor.
Noah began fussing.
Lena pulled him close.
“Hush, baby.”
She hummed four notes.
Noah settled instantly.
Ethan looked at her.
Even in darkness, she felt his stare.
“Don’t.”
“Sorry.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I keep doing it.”
They reached a garage.
Marcus found an old Range Rover with keys inside.
They drove out through a rear service gate.
Only when the estate disappeared behind them did Ethan open Daniel’s envelope.
Inside was a copy of Claire’s vehicle inspection.
A photograph of a brake line.
A mechanic’s statement.
And an affidavit signed by Daniel Hart.
Lena read over Ethan’s shoulder.
“The brake line was cut.”
Ethan’s vision blurred.
He remembered Claire leaving that morning.
Her coffee untouched.
Noah asleep upstairs.
Claire kissing Ethan at the door.
“I’ll be back before dinner.”
Those had been the last words she ever spoke to him.
He gripped the paper so tightly it tore.
Lena touched his wrist.
“Ethan.”
He pulled away.
Not because he didn’t want comfort.
Because he did.
Too much.
The affidavit named a mechanic.
Thomas Reed.
He claimed Margaret Bennett’s private security chief paid him fifty thousand dollars to sabotage Claire’s SUV.
Marcus cursed.
“We need police.”
“We need evidence that survives Margaret’s lawyers,” Ethan said.
Lena stared at him.
“You sound like this isn’t the first powerful family you’ve fought.”
“It isn’t.”
“Who are you?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I own Cole International.”
She blinked.
“The hotel company?”
“And logistics.”
“And half the buildings around Midtown?”
“Not half.”
“How many?”
“This feels unimportant.”
“It feels deeply important because I served you sparkling water six hours ago.”
Despite everything, Ethan smiled.
Then his phone rang.
Margaret Bennett.
Everyone went silent.
Ethan answered.
“Margaret.”
Her voice was calm.
“Where is my grandson?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“My son is safe.”
“You misunderstand.”
“Do I?”
“You’ve allowed a stranger into Claire’s life.”
“Claire’s sister.”
Silence.
Then Margaret spoke.
“You have no idea what that woman wants.”
“Her name is Lena.”
“She is Elena Morales all over again.”
Lena’s face hardened.
Ethan put the call on speaker.
Margaret continued.
“Women like that see money and call it family.”
Lena leaned toward the phone.
“You stole my sister.”
Margaret stopped.
Then laughed softly.
“So Marco finally talked.”
Lena’s hands curled into fists.
“You murdered Claire.”
“Careful.”
“You did.”
Margaret’s voice turned icy.
“You’re standing near a child who carries my family’s future.”
“No,” Lena said.
“He carries Claire’s.”
Another silence.
Then Margaret whispered something that changed everything.
“You think Claire was Ethan’s wife because of love?”
Ethan stared at the phone.
Margaret continued.
May you like
“Ask him why she married him.”
The line disconnected.
