Chapter 3 - THE SECOND DAUGHTERLena slapped her palm against the bar.

“Tell me.”

Marco looked away.

“Lena—”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You watched me grow up.”

“I know.”

“You came to my graduation.”

“I know.”

“You carried my mother’s coffin.”

Marco closed his eyes.

“And you knew I had a sister?”

People were staring again.

Lena didn’t care.

“Tell me what happened.”

Marco took a slow breath.

“Elena was nineteen when she got pregnant.”

“With twins?”

“Yes.”

“My father?”

“Daniel Hart.”

Ethan’s head snapped up.

Hart.

Claire’s adoptive mother’s maiden name was Hart.

Marco continued.

“Daniel came from money. Real money. His family thought Elena was beneath him.”

Lena laughed bitterly.

“So what? They bought one baby?”

Marco’s silence answered her.

“Oh my God.”

“They didn’t call it buying.”

“What did they call it?”

“Helping.”

Lena’s eyes burned.

“Helping who?”

Marco looked down.

“Elena was broke. Daniel disappeared after his father threatened to cut him off. When the girls were born, Elena nearly died.”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“That picture was taken four days before everything fell apart.”

Ethan held Noah tighter.

“What happened to Lucia?”

Marco looked at him.

“A woman came to the hospital with lawyers.”

“Who?”

“Margaret Hart.”

Ethan’s blood chilled.

Claire’s adoptive mother.

Margaret Bennett.

“She said Elena couldn’t raise two children.”

Lena whispered, “My grandmother stole my sister?”

“Not your grandmother.”

Marco’s face hardened.

“Daniel’s older sister.”

Ethan tried to process it.

Margaret Hart had taken her brother’s child.

Raised Claire as her own.

And never told her.

“Why?” Ethan asked.

Marco shook his head.

“Daniel’s parents wanted the scandal buried. Margaret had just learned she couldn’t have children. Everyone convinced themselves it solved two problems.”

Lena looked sick.

“Did my mother agree?”

“No.”

The word landed like a hammer.

“She signed temporary guardianship papers while medicated after surgery. By the time she understood, Lucia was gone.”

Lena covered her mouth.

“She fought?”

“For years.”

Marco opened a drawer beneath the register.

He removed an old envelope.

Elena Morales was written across the front.

“She kept copies.”

Lena reached for it.

Marco held on.

“Your mother made me swear I wouldn’t give this to you unless the past came looking for you.”

Lena glanced at Noah.

“It just did.”

Marco released the envelope.

Inside were letters.

Court filings.

Hospital records.

And photographs.

Lena opened the first letter.

Her mother’s handwriting covered the page.

My sweet Lucia, I did not give you away.

Lena began crying before she reached the second line.

Ethan looked away.

He felt like an intruder.

Then he noticed something else inside the envelope.

A recent photograph.

Not thirty years old.

Not even ten.

Claire.

Standing outside this restaurant.

The timestamp showed four months earlier.

Ethan snatched it.

“When was this taken?”

Marco looked at him.

“March.”

“Claire told me she had a client meeting that night.”

“She came here.”

“Did she meet Lena?”

“No.”

Lena shook her head.

“I would remember her.”

Marco nodded.

“She asked about Elena.”

Ethan’s heartbeat quickened.

“What did you tell her?”

“Not enough.”

“Why?”

“Because she said Margaret Bennett had people following her.”

Ethan stared at him.

“What?”

Marco lowered his voice.

“She was scared.”

Claire had never told Ethan she was afraid.

He remembered the last month of her life.

Changed passwords.

Late-night phone calls.

A second phone he once saw in her purse.

Claire dismissing it all when he asked questions.

Marco pointed toward the envelope.

“She left something with me.”

“What?”

Marco looked at Noah.

“She said if anything happened to her, I was supposed to give it to the person Noah trusted before anyone else.”

Ethan’s skin prickled.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It didn’t then.”

Marco looked directly at Lena.

“It does now.”

May you like

He reached beneath the bar.

And pulled out a small red key.
