Chapter 20 - The Day He Returned

Thirty months after Daniel Brooks entered federal custody, he walked through a gate carrying one small bag.

No convoy waited.

No black SUVs.

No security team.

Only Natalie.

Evelyn.

And Lucas.

Lucas was eight now.

Taller.

Missing one front tooth.

Daniel stopped when he saw him.

For a strange second, both seemed uncertain.

Then Lucas ran.

Daniel dropped the bag.

He caught his son.

Lucas wrapped his arms around his neck.

“You came back.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I came back.”

“You said you would.”

“Yes.”

Lucas pulled away.

“You look older.”

Evelyn muttered.

“So do you.”

Lucas laughed.

Natalie stood several feet away.

Daniel looked at her.

For thirty months he had imagined this moment.

He had never found words good enough.

Natalie solved it.

“Welcome home.”

Daniel smiled.

“Thank you for keeping it one.”

The Brooks mansion had changed.

Half the staff was gone.

Several rooms were converted into offices for a children's trauma foundation funded by Daniel's remaining legal assets.

The red door was no longer red.

Lucas had asked to paint it blue.

Caroline's wing had become part family archive and part reading room.

Daniel stopped in the hallway where everything had begun.

The bronze horse still stood on a table.

Not the one Lucas threw.

Its matching piece.

Daniel stared.

“Why keep it?”

Lucas shrugged.

“So we remember.”

Natalie looked at him.

“Remember what?”

Lucas thought.

“That I was really mad.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Lucas continued.

“And scared.”

He touched the bronze horse carefully.

“And that Natalie stayed.”

Natalie's throat tightened.

Evelyn handed Daniel Caroline's photograph.

He turned it over.

Home is people instead of walls.

Daniel read the sentence twice.

Then sat on the staircase.

For a while, he could not speak.

Lucas sat beside him.

Natalie took the other side.

Evelyn remained standing because emotional arrangements offended her professional dignity.

Daniel looked around the mansion.

It had once symbolized power.

Now it was just stone.

Wood.

Glass.

May you like

People gave it meaning.

He finally understood.
