Chapter 12 - Midnight at Pier 19

They did not give Adrian Natalie.

They gave him a performance.

At 11:58 p.m., Daniel arrived at Pier 19 carrying Caroline's drive.

Natalie watched from a federal command vehicle three blocks away.

She hated the plan.

Daniel hated it more.

But Mara was alive.

The warehouse lights flickered on.

Adrian appeared.

He looked tired.

Not defeated.

Mara sat behind him.

Daniel walked forward.

“Let her go.”

“Drive first.”

Daniel raised it.

Adrian smiled.

“You finally learned to listen.”

“Where is Mara's sister?”

Adrian's expression shifted.

Daniel knew.

Rebecca had also been taken.

“You always were sentimental at the wrong time.”

Adrian approached.

Daniel looked at the man who had stood beside him for eighteen years.

“You killed Caroline.”

“I didn't touch her car.”

“You let her die.”

Adrian shrugged.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“She was my wife.”

“She was weak.”

Daniel's fist moved before he could stop it.

Federal agents almost entered early.

Adrian fell.

Then laughed.

“There he is.”

Daniel froze.

“The man I built this with.”

“No.”

“You want to pretend Natalie changed you?”

Adrian wiped blood from his lip.

“You were me long before she arrived.”

Daniel did not answer.

Because part of him knew Adrian was right.

They had built an empire through fear.

The difference was that Daniel had finally become afraid of what that empire would do to his son.

Adrian reached for the drive.

Daniel let him take it.

The device was a duplicate.

Tracked.

Encrypted.

Useless.

Adrian examined it.

Then looked at Daniel.

“You think I don't know?”

He smiled.

“You've been talking to federal agents.”

Daniel's face changed.

Adrian stepped backward.

“Mara was never the real reason I brought you here.”

Daniel realized too late.

His phone rang.

Natalie answered from the command vehicle.

Evelyn screamed through the speaker.

“They took Lucas!”

Everything inside Daniel stopped.

The safe house had been compromised from within.

Not by a guard.

By Dr. Hale.

The family physician.

A man Daniel had trusted since Lucas was born.

Hale had sedated Evelyn.

Disabled the alarm.

And taken the child.

Daniel stared at Adrian.

“You touch him—”

Adrian smiled.

“I don't need to.”

A van roared from behind the warehouse.

Adrian jumped inside.

Federal agents moved.

Gunfire erupted.

Daniel ran.

He did not care about the drive.

Mara.

Adrian.

His empire.

Only Lucas.

The van disappeared into the industrial district.

Natalie climbed from the command vehicle.

Daniel looked at her.

His face was empty with terror.

Natalie grabbed his coat.

“He's alive.”

“You don't know that.”

“Yes.”

She forced him to look at her.

“Adrian needs him alive.”

Daniel's breathing steadied slightly.

Natalie continued.

“And Lucas is not the same boy Adrian thinks he took.”

Daniel stared at her.

She was right.

The old Lucas froze when frightened.

This Lucas watched.

Listened.

Remembered.

And somewhere inside the van, a five-year-old boy pressed Arthur against his chest and quietly pulled a small red emergency marker from his backpack.

Natalie had taught him something two days earlier.

If you ever get lost, leave signs.

May you like

Lucas uncapped the marker.

And began drawing arrows.
