Chapter 18 - THE LAST TRUSTEE

Calder had twelve armed men.

Cole had four agents.

Marco had three security officers.

The math was poor.

Calder knew it.

He held a gun against Anthony’s neck.

“Put everything down.”

Cole did not.

Calder smiled.

“Special Agent, half your agency’s leadership is in those files.”

Cole’s face hardened.

“That isn’t leverage anymore.”

“No?”

Calder asked.

“Wait until you see whose signatures are on the foreign intelligence accounts.”

Cole hesitated.

Vincent saw it.

Black Crown infected institutions because everyone believed exposure would hurt them more than complicity.

Exactly as Salvatore intended.

Vincent looked at Cole.

“If you lower that gun because you’re afraid of a file, then Black Crown already owns you.”

Cole glanced at him.

Then raised the gun higher.

Calder’s smile disappeared.

“Fine.”

he said.

He looked at Vincent.

“Bring me the cylinder.”

“No.”

“I’ll kill Anthony.”

Vincent looked at his uncle.

Anthony gave a small shrug.

“Wouldn’t be the first Corvino funeral.”

Dominic muttered, “I’m beginning to like him.”

Calder pressed the gun harder.

Vincent wheeled forward.

“What do you actually want?”

“The final partition.”

“You already know how to take emergency trusteeship.”

“Only if the successors die.”

“So kill us.”

Calder’s expression tightened.

Vincent understood.

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Tessa changes the protocol.”

Calder’s eyes moved to her.

Confirmation.

Vincent continued.

“You didn’t know about the Rizzo line.”

Calder said nothing.

“That’s why you followed us.”

“You needed Isabella’s safeguard.”

Calder’s jaw tightened.

Vincent smiled.

“Twenty-six years and you still weren’t invited to the table.”

That hit him.

Calder had spent his life standing near powerful men.

Making them powerful.

Watching them claim credit.

Black Crown was not simply money.

It was recognition.

Ownership.

Finally being the man everyone feared.

“You think this is vanity?”

Calder asked.

“I think most empires are.”

Vincent replied.

Calder’s face hardened.

“Your father understood power.”

“My father died surrounded by people keeping secrets from each other.”

Vincent said.

“I’m done admiring that.”

Calder fired.

The bullet hit the floor inches from Vincent’s wheel.

Tessa flinched.

Vincent did not.

Calder pointed the gun at him.

“You sit there because men like your father built a world where decisions mattered.”

Vincent looked down at his chair.

“No.”

“I sit here because a frightened man thought violence was the cleanest solution.”

Thomas.

Adrian.

Salvatore.

Calder.

All men convinced force simplified things.

It never had.

Vincent looked at Tessa.

Then Lauren.

Then Dominic.

People tied to him by blood, love, betrayal, accident.

Complicated.

Real.

“Give him the cylinder.”

Vincent said.

Dominic stared.

“What?”

Lauren looked at him.

“No.”

Vincent repeated.

“Give it to him.”

Tessa watched his face.

She understood there was a plan.

Dominic reluctantly handed the cylinder over.

Calder smiled.

“Smart.”

“No.”

Vincent said.

“Necessary.”

Calder opened it.

Removed the key.

The tape.

The letter.

“What is this?”

he asked.

“A way to open the master node.”

Lauren said.

Calder looked at her.

“You’re coming with me.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

He turned toward Tessa.

“And her.”

Gabriel raised his gun.

Calder’s men aimed.

Vincent said, “Enough.”

Gabriel looked at him.

Vincent’s voice was calm.

“We go.”

Dominic whispered, “Vince.”

“Trust me.”

Dominic almost laughed.

“That family skill hasn’t gone well.”

Vincent smiled slightly.

“Try once.”

Calder took Vincent, Lauren, and Tessa.

Exactly who he believed he needed.

Corvino.

Hayes.

Rizzo.

He left Dominic alive because he believed Vincent’s biometric node was already primary.

Matteo remained elsewhere with federal protection.

Calder transported them to the harbor.

Warehouse 18.

Back underground.

Black Crown.

The circle closed.

At the master console, Calder forced Lauren to use the key.

Then Tessa’s palm.

The system rejected her.

Calder’s face tightened.

“Why?”

Tessa looked at Vincent.

Vincent understood.

“Blood verification.”

Lauren said.

Tessa needed a pinprick sample.

Calder handed her a sterile lancet.

She hesitated.

Vincent nodded.

She did it.

The system accepted.

RIZZO OVERRIDE VERIFIED.

Lauren entered the Hayes encryption sequence.

HAYES CUSTODIAN VERIFIED.

Then Vincent rolled toward the scanner.

It requested voice and retinal authentication.

He complied.

CORVINO SUCCESSOR VERIFIED.

The master screen awakened.

Black Crown’s full network appeared.

Billions in controlled assets.

Files.

Accounts.

People.

Leverage.

A digital empire.

Calder stared as though he had reached heaven.

Vincent understood the seduction.

With a few commands he could ruin enemies.

Reward loyalty.

Recover his companies.

Protect Dominic.

Erase his own charges.

Maybe even rebuild everything.

Power whispered more persuasively than threats ever could.

The screen displayed two options.

TRANSFER AUTHORITY.

TERMINATE NETWORK.

Calder raised the gun.

“Transfer.”

Vincent looked at him.

“No.”

Calder smiled.

“You think you have a choice?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Black Crown requires voluntary surrender.”

Calder frowned.

Vincent selected TERMINATE NETWORK.

A warning appeared.

CORVINO SUCCESSOR MUST RELINQUISH ALL BENEFICIARY CLAIMS.

Calder stared.

Vincent pressed continue.

Another warning.

TERMINATION IRREVERSIBLE.

ALL TRUSTS, LEVERAGE ARCHIVES, AND HIDDEN HOLDINGS WILL BE DISCLOSED TO APPOINTED LEGAL AUTHORITIES OR LIQUIDATED.

Dominic had guessed correctly.

Corvino Holdings itself was partially tied into the network.

Vincent would lose hundreds of millions.

Maybe more.

Calder laughed.

“You won’t.”

Vincent looked at him.

“You spent six months believing losing my legs was the worst thing that could happen to me.”

He pressed his palm to the confirmation panel.

“You were wrong.”

Calder shot.

Tessa screamed.

The bullet struck Vincent high in the shoulder.

He slammed backward.

Pain exploded.

Lauren lunged.

Calder grabbed her.

Vincent’s hand slipped from the scanner.

TERMINATION INCOMPLETE.

Calder pointed the gun again.

Then another shot cracked.

Calder jerked.

He looked down.

Blood spread across his side.

Adrian Hayes stood at the tunnel entrance.

Gun raised.

Lauren stared at her brother.

Adrian looked exhausted.

“Finish it.”

he said.

Calder fired toward him.

Adrian dove behind steel.

Chaos erupted.

Tessa grabbed Vincent’s hand.

“Stay with me.”

“I’m not dying.”

“You don’t get to decide that.”

“I usually do.”

She pressed cloth against his shoulder.

Vincent reached toward the console.

Too far.

His wheelchair had rolled backward.

His right arm barely worked.

He could not reach.

For the first time, his legs mattered.

Three feet.

Nothing.

Three feet between him and the button.

Tessa started to move him.

Calder fired again.

She ducked.

Vincent looked at the console.

Then at the transfer bar beside his chair.

He locked his arms.

Pulled.

His body shifted forward.

Pain ripped through him.

Tessa shouted his name.

Vincent ignored her.

He slid from the wheelchair onto the floor.

His legs remained useless behind him.

He dragged himself forward with his left arm.

One foot.

Two.

Calder saw.

He turned.

Raised the gun.

Lauren struck his wrist.

The shot went wide.

Vincent reached the console.

His fingers touched the confirmation pad.

Calder screamed.

“No!”

Vincent pressed.

SYSTEM TERMINATION AUTHORIZED.

The screen changed.

FINAL REQUIREMENT: SALVATORE CORVINO PHYSICAL SEAL.

Vincent froze.

The ring.

Calder laughed.

Anthony’s ring.

Not there.

They had failed.

Then Tessa whispered.

“Vincent.”

She pointed.

On the desk beside Calder’s jacket lay Salvatore’s ring.

Calder had taken it from Anthony.

Vincent began dragging himself toward it.

Calder saw.

So did Lauren.

She dove first.

Grabbed the ring.

Calder struck her.

She fell.

The ring rolled across the floor.

Stopped inches from Vincent’s hand.

He reached.

His fingers closed around it.

Calder raised his gun.

Adrian fired first.

Calder fell.

Vincent pressed the ring into the seal.

The system accepted.

A final message appeared.

BLACK CROWN TERMINATION CONFIRMED.

Across the room, servers began erasing.

Accounts froze.

Encrypted files transferred to court-controlled repositories.

Hidden trusts dissolved.

Ownership structures collapsed.

Thirty years of fear began dying in silence.

Vincent looked at his father’s ring in his hand.

Then dropped it.

May you like

For the first time in his life, the name Corvino felt lighter.
