Chapter 14 - THE KINGDOM BURNS

The mansion fell in seven minutes.
Not because Vincent’s security was weak.
Because the attackers knew every access point.
Every camera.
Every emergency lock.
They entered through places even some employees did not know existed.
Marco watched remotely.
“This is Black Crown protocol.”
Vincent looked at him.
“You recognize it?”
“Yes.”
“Whose?”
Marco shook his head.
“Old Salvatore teams.”
“Retired contractors.”
“Military.”
“Private security.”
“People who disappeared into normal lives.”
Dominic stared.
“Dad had an army?”
“A small one.”
Marco said.
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.”
The attackers did not steal jewelry.
They did not enter bedrooms.
They went directly to Vincent’s office.
The library.
The server room.
Then the master suite.
“They’re erasing evidence.”
Lauren said.
Vincent watched his bedroom camera die.
White roses.
The bed.
The room where he had spent six months hating his own body.
Then flames appeared.
Tessa inhaled.
“They’re burning it.”
Vincent said nothing.
The fire spread quickly.
The mansion had been in his family for forty-three years.
His mother’s piano.
His father’s study.
Photographs.
Childhood rooms.
The dining room where Isabella served Christmas dinner.
The staircase Dominic slid down at eight and broke two teeth.
Vincent expected grief.
Instead he felt something close to relief.
The house had become a museum of lies.
Let it burn.
Dominic looked at him.
“You okay?”
Vincent watched flames reach the second floor.
“No.”
“But I will be.”
Fire crews arrived.
The tactical team vanished before police secured the block.
Nothing important remained.
News helicopters circled.
The Corvino name was suddenly everywhere.
Documents.
Corruption.
Fire.
Alleged organized crime.
Vincent became a national story before noon.
For the first time in his life, his power could not control the narrative.
He found that strangely freeing.
They relocated to an unused hotel owned through a clean company.
Not Black Crown.
Vincent insisted on knowing that.
Maya remained under medical supervision.
Gabriel survived his wound.
Anthony was still missing.
Adrian still missing.
Matteo arrived at the hotel at 3:00 p.m.
Vincent looked at him.
“You took your time.”
“My safe house was raided.”
“Same team?”
“Yes.”
“Who are they?”
Matteo dropped photographs onto a table.
Three men.
Former contractors.
One woman.
Former federal intelligence analyst.
Each had received payments from an entity called Crown Security Holdings.
Lauren stared.
“That company doesn’t exist anymore.”
Matteo answered.
“It does now.”
“Owner?”
“A trust.”
“Trustee?”
Matteo looked at Vincent.
“Arthur Calder.”
Dominic cursed.
Vincent was not satisfied.
“Too easy.”
Matteo frowned.
“What?”
“Calder spent years manipulating everyone.”
“He knows how to hide ownership.”
“Why leave his name attached?”
Lauren understood.
“Because somebody wants us focused on him.”
Matteo looked irritated.
“Calder admitted involvement.”
“In some of it.”
Vincent said.
“Not everything.”
Tessa entered carrying coffee.
She placed one near Vincent.
He looked at it.
“No sugar?”
“You don’t need sugar.”
“You’re becoming controlling.”
“You’re becoming alive enough to complain.”
He took the coffee.
Matteo noticed the exchange.
Vincent noticed him noticing.
He did not care.
“What are we missing?”
Vincent asked.
Tessa sat.
“The first question.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What first question?”
Dominic asked.
Tessa answered.
“Why was Vincent shot?”
Thomas claimed responsibility.
But his explanation still made little sense.
He believed Vincent controlled Black Crown.
Then shot him once from distance.
Did not confirm the kill.
Did not try again.
And somehow the injury left Vincent alive but disabled.
Vincent looked toward Lauren.
“Your father said he aimed to kill me.”
“Yes.”
“Is he a good shot?”
Lauren hesitated.
Gabriel answered from the doorway.
“Excellent.”
He entered slowly.
Bandage beneath his jacket.
Vincent stared.
“You should be in bed.”
Gabriel laughed.
“Look who’s talking.”
Vincent almost liked him.
Almost.
“Could Thomas miss at that distance?”
“No.”
Gabriel said.
Everyone went quiet.
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Then why did the bullet hit low?”
Gabriel leaned against the wall.
“Maybe he didn’t miss.”
Tessa looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
Gabriel studied Vincent.
“Your spine injury forced you out of day-to-day operations.”
“Made everyone underestimate you.”
“Put therapists and doctors around you.”
“Changed where you lived.”
“Who touched you.”
“Who had access.”
Vincent thought of Adrian.
Keller.
Biometrics.
“He wasn’t trying to kill me.”
Lauren’s face drained.
Gabriel nodded.
“Thomas lied.”
Vincent felt rage ignite.
“Why?”
Lauren shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Gabriel continued.
“Your shooting may have been an activation event.”
Matteo frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Black Crown’s successor protocol might require incapacity.”
Vincent stared.
“Why?”
“Salvatore didn’t want succession while he was alive.”
“If an heir was incapacitated, the network could test alternatives.”
Dominic looked horrified.
“So Thomas shot Vince to wake the system?”
Gabriel shook his head.
“Maybe.”
Vincent called Thomas.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Lauren tried.
No answer.
Adrian.
No answer.
Vincent looked at Marco.
“Find Thomas.”
Marco began making calls.
Tessa’s face had become thoughtful.
“What?”
Vincent asked.
She looked at him.
“The bullet entered your lower back.”
“Yes.”
“You were walking toward the car.”
“Yes.”
“Where was Lauren?”
“Under the awning.”
“Dominic across the street.”
“Marco near the car.”
Tessa leaned forward.
“If Thomas wanted to disable you, he needed a predictable angle.”
Vincent understood.
“Someone positioned me.”
“Did anyone call you?”
Vincent thought.
He had left dinner earlier than planned.
Why?
A text.
He remembered.
Lauren had messaged him from outside.
Come out.
I need you.
Vincent looked at her.
Her face changed.
“I didn’t send it.”
He stared.
“I received it from your number.”
“My phone was in my purse.”
“Who had access?”
Lauren thought.
Then whispered.
“Adrian.”
Everyone froze.
“He visited me earlier that day.”
“As Keller?”
“No.”
“As my brother.”
Vincent’s anger became ice.
Adrian knew where Lauren would stand.
Knew Vincent would respond.
Knew Thomas’s position.
The shooting had been coordinated.
“Your father pulled the trigger.”
Vincent said.
“And Adrian set the shot.”
Lauren closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
A voice answered from the television.
They all turned.
Live news.
A press conference outside a federal building.
Adrian Hayes stood at a podium.
Not hiding.
Cameras surrounded him.
The banner identified him as a federal cooperating witness.
Vincent stared.
Adrian began speaking.
“My name is Dr. Adrian Hayes.”
“For six years, I infiltrated the Corvino criminal organization on behalf of a multi-agency task force.”
Dominic laughed in disbelief.
“What?”
Adrian continued.
“I have provided evidence concerning extortion, financial crimes, bribery, and a covert network known internally as Black Crown.”
Lauren whispered.
“No.”
Vincent looked at her.
“You didn’t know.”
“No.”
Adrian looked directly into the cameras.
“And the man currently attempting to seize control of that network is Vincent Corvino.”
The room went silent.
Vincent stared at the television.
In one sentence Adrian had changed the entire battlefield.
Vincent was no longer merely an heir.
May you like
He was now publicly accused of trying to become the king.
