Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO

Nobody moved.

Olivia walked to the television, connected her phone, and opened the video.

“Olivia,” Vanessa said softly. “Sweetheart, maybe we should wait until everyone calms down.”

“No.”

Her voice was cold.

Too cold for a twelve-year-old.

Adrian stared at the black TV screen.

“Play it.”

Olivia pressed the button.

The video began upstairs.

Olivia’s voice could be heard talking about a history project.

Then the camera turned toward the hallway.

Emma’s stroller was near the staircase.

Clara was in the kitchen.

Vanessa walked into frame.

Adrian frowned.

Vanessa looked around.

Once.

Twice.

Then she placed both hands on the stroller.

Clara whispered, “Oh my God.”

On the screen, Vanessa shoved.

Hard.

The stroller rolled.

Emma began to cry.

Clara came running from the kitchen.

“EMMA!”

She lunged forward just before the stroller reached the stairs.

Her body slammed into the railing.

She caught the handle with one hand.

The stroller tilted.

Clara fell.

Emma slid against the safety straps but stayed inside.

Then Vanessa rushed over.

Instead of helping, she grabbed Clara’s arm.

The video shook as Olivia ran toward them.

“What are you doing?” Olivia’s recorded voice shouted.

And then came Vanessa’s answer.

“She pushed it!”

The video ended.

Silence.

Adrian felt the blood drain from his face.

Clara had saved Emma.

Vanessa had tried to hurt her.

And Adrian had rewarded the hero with a slap.

He turned slowly.

Vanessa was backing toward the door.

“Adrian,” she said, “I can explain.”

“Explain?”

His voice sounded unfamiliar.

“You pushed my baby.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“It’s on video.”

“I was upset!”

“You pushed a stroller with my daughter inside!”

Vanessa started crying again.

But now Adrian saw it differently.

He saw calculation.

He saw performance.

He saw a mask.

Clara picked up her purse from the floor.

“I’m leaving.”

Adrian turned.

“Clara…”

She flinched when he said her name.

That hurt more than any scream.

“Please.”

“No.”

“I made a terrible mistake.”

“You hit me.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I know.”

“You didn’t ask me what happened. You didn’t even give me thirty seconds.”

“I know.”

“You believed her because she cried first.”

Vanessa shouted, “Don’t act innocent!”

Clara spun around.

“Innocent?”

Her voice shook with rage.

“I have taken care of Emma since she was six weeks old. I held that baby when she had a fever. I stayed awake all night when she couldn’t breathe through her nose. I missed my own son’s birthday dinner because Adrian had a business emergency.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

Clara continued.

“And you accuse me of trying to kill her?”

“No,” Adrian said quietly. “Not anymore.”

Clara looked at him.

“The problem is you did.”

She walked toward the door.

“Clara, please don’t leave.”

She stopped.

For one second, Adrian thought she might stay.

Then she turned.

“You should be asking yourself why Vanessa wanted your daughter hurt.”

The front door closed.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa’s face changed.

The tears disappeared.

“Fine,” she said.

Her voice was suddenly flat.

May you like

“You want the truth?”
