Chapter 13 - RACHEL’S LAST MESSAGE

The video was hidden inside the USB.
Encrypted.
Rachel had labeled it:
FOR OLIVIA — WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH.
Adrian didn’t know what “old enough” meant.
Twelve felt too young.
But after everything Olivia had seen, childhood had already been stolen from her in pieces.
That evening, Adrian sat beside her.
“You don’t have to watch it now.”
Olivia held his hand.
“I want to.”
The video began.
Rachel appeared on screen.
Healthy.
Alive.
Smiling.
Olivia immediately started crying.
“Mom.”
Rachel looked directly into the camera.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Olivia covered her mouth.
Rachel continued.
“If you’re watching this, there’s a good chance I’m not there to explain some things myself.”
Adrian’s throat tightened.
“I need you to know something. Adults make mistakes. Big ones. Sometimes we protect the wrong people because we think kindness will change them.”
Rachel took a breath.
“I protected Vanessa. I shouldn’t have.”
Then she smiled sadly.
“But I don’t regret believing people can become better. I only regret ignoring the moment when hope turned into denial.”
Adrian lowered his head.
Those words hit him too.
Rachel continued.
“Olivia, trust people who show you who they are through actions. Not tears. Not promises. Actions.”
Olivia squeezed Adrian’s hand.
“And your father…”
Adrian looked up.
Rachel smiled.
“He can be stubborn.”
Olivia laughed through her tears.
“He loves hard. And when he’s scared, sometimes that love turns into anger.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Clara.
The slap.
The accusation.
Rachel’s words cut deeper than blame because they were true.
“If he ever forgets to listen before he reacts, remind him that I said this.”
Rachel leaned toward the camera.
“Slow down, Adrian.”
Olivia looked at her father.
He couldn’t speak.
Rachel finished with a smile.
“You two are my favorite people in the world. Take care of each other.”
The screen went black.
Olivia cried against Adrian’s chest.
He held her.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“For what?”
“For making fear more important than truth.”
Olivia pulled back.
“You mean Clara.”
“Yes.”
“You really hurt her.”
“I know.”
“Can she ever forgive you?”
“I don’t know.”
The next morning, Adrian went to Clara’s hospital room.
Empty.
His heart dropped.
A nurse approached.
“She was discharged early.”
“Did she say where she was going?”
“Home, I think.”
Adrian drove to Clara’s apartment.
Mateo answered.
“She’s packing.”
Adrian stepped inside.
Clara was placing clothes into two suitcases.
“Where are you going?”
She looked at him.
“Chicago.”
“What?”
“My sister lives there.”
“For how long?”
Clara zipped the suitcase.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You’re leaving.”
“Yes.”
“Because of me?”
Clara looked at him carefully.
“Wouldn’t you?”
Adrian had no answer.
Then Clara picked up the suitcase.
“I love Emma.”
Her voice cracked.
“I love Olivia.”
She looked at Adrian.
“But every time I look at you, I feel your hand hitting my face.”
May you like
And Adrian finally understood that saving someone did not mean they had to stay.
