Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE

The message never delivered.

Police intercepted it.

But the meaning was obvious.

There was still something we didn’t know.

Vanessa asked to see me.

I said no.

Then changed my mind.

Not for her.

For Rachel.

The jail interview room smelled like disinfectant and old coffee.

Vanessa sat behind glass.

Bruise fading along her jaw from the hotel struggle.

Orange uniform.

No makeup.

For the first time since I met her, she looked small.

She picked up the phone.

“You look tired.”

“Tell me what happened to Rachel.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Mom cut the brake line.”

“I know.”

“No. You know part of it.”

I waited.

“She didn’t mean for Rachel to die.”

“Don’t defend her.”

“I’m not.”

“Then talk.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Rachel realized something was wrong before she reached the highway.”

I leaned closer.

“How?”

“She called me.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“She knew Mom and I were connected.”

“What did Rachel say?”

“She said she was going to the police.”

“And?”

“I panicked.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I called Mom.”

“You already told me that.”

“No. Before the crash.”

Silence.

“I told Mom Rachel knew everything.”

The words landed slowly.

“If you hadn’t called Diane...”

“I know.”

“No.”

I gripped the phone.

“Say it.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“If I hadn’t called Mom, Rachel might still be alive.”

I wanted to hate her completely.

That would have been easier.

But she looked broken.

Human.

And that made it worse.

“You married me after helping create the situation that killed my wife.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you saved me.”

“Yes.”

“You let Lily call you Mom.”

Vanessa started crying.

“I loved her at first.”

“Don’t.”

“I did.”

“You locked her in a dark room.”

“I know.”

“You drugged her.”

“I know.”

“You made her eat dog food.”

“I know!”

Her voice cracked.

“I know what I became!”

I stared through the glass.

“Why?”

Vanessa pressed her fist against her forehead.

“Because every time she looked at me, I saw Rachel.”

“That’s not Lily’s fault.”

“I know.”

“She trusted you.”

“I know.”

“And you punished her for reminding you that Rachel existed.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes.”

Silence stretched between us.

Then she whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

I felt nothing.

“I don’t forgive you.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“You’ll never see Lily again.”

A tear ran down her cheek.

“I know.”

I stood.

“Ryan?”

I stopped.

“Rachel left something.”

I slowly turned.

“What?”

“The night before she died. She gave an envelope to someone.”

“Who?”

“Dr. Shaw.”

My breath caught.

“She told me once when she confronted me. She said, ‘If anything happens to me, Ryan will know everything.’”

“Why didn’t Shaw give it to me?”

“I don’t know.”

I left the jail.

Called Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

She answered on the third ring.

When I mentioned the envelope, she went silent.

“You still have it?”

“Yes.”

“For three years?”

“I promised Rachel I would give it to you only if someone ever tried to hurt Lily.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Why?”

“Because that’s exactly what Rachel told me.”

An hour later, Dr. Shaw handed me a sealed white envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Rachel’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first line read:

Ryan, if you are reading this, then Vanessa got closer to our family than I was able to stop.

And the final page contained a warning that made me sit down.

Whatever happens to me, protect Lily.

Because I believe Vanessa’s real target was never me.

May you like

It was you.
