Chapter 11 - WHAT RACHEL KNEW

Vanessa survived.
The hotel fire was contained quickly.
It had been deliberately started in a utility closet.
Diane remained missing.
Vanessa refused further questioning without a lawyer.
But her final sentence haunted me.
Rachel knew.
Three years earlier, the day she died, Rachel had called me at 4:12 P.M.
I didn’t answer.
I was in a meeting.
Her voicemail had been simple.
“Hey, call me when you can. I found out something weird. Love you.”
I never called back.
We planned to talk at home.
She never made it.
Cole recovered Rachel’s stolen wooden box from Vanessa’s abandoned car.
Inside were journals.
Most were ordinary.
Marriage.
Work.
Lily.
Then, two months before her death, the entries changed.
There is something wrong with Vanessa Blake.
She knows things I never told her.
Another:
Vanessa asked whether Ryan knows his father had another child. I thought she was trying to scare me.
Another:
I spoke to Diane Blake today. She says Ryan’s father ruined her life.
And finally, the last entry.
I ran the DNA test.
Vanessa is Frank’s daughter.
Ryan deserves to know.
My hands trembled.
Rachel had discovered everything.
But there was more.
Rachel had secretly recorded a conversation with Diane.
Her old phone still existed in evidence from the crash.
Cole had it examined again.
A deleted audio file was recovered.
Diane’s voice:
“Tell Ryan and you’ll destroy him.”
Rachel:
“He needs to know.”
“You think he’ll thank you?”
“I think he deserves the truth.”
“You have my daughter investigated behind my back?”
“Your daughter has been following me.”
“She loves him.”
“She barely knows him.”
A pause.
Then Diane said something that chilled me.
“She has known him her entire life.”
Rachel replied:
“That doesn’t make it love.”
Diane:
“You stole her place.”
“You’re sick.”
“My daughter was supposed to be part of that family.”
“She is his sister.”
“Blood is paperwork.”
The recording ended.
That night, Diane sabotaged Rachel’s car.
Maybe to scare her.
Maybe to kill her.
The crash happened at 8:43 P.M.
At 8:51, Diane called Vanessa.
At 9:10, Vanessa searched online:
HIGHWAY CRASH WESTBOUND.
At 9:14:
WOMAN DEAD INTERSTATE.
At 9:18:
HOW LONG DOES POLICE INVESTIGATION TAKE.
The prosecution now had motive.
Opportunity.
Digital evidence.
And Vanessa’s hotel confession.
But Diane was still gone.
Then my father disappeared.
He left home to meet his attorney.
Never arrived.
His phone was found beside the highway.
At 3:30 P.M., I received a video.
Dad sat tied to a chair.
His mouth taped shut.
Diane stood behind him.
Older now.
Gray hair.
But the same eyes as Vanessa.
“Hello, Ryan.”
She smiled into the camera.
“You have my daughter.”
I stared at the screen.
“So now I have your father.”
Then she leaned close to Dad’s ear.
“Bring Lily to me before midnight.”
My heart stopped.
Diane smiled wider.
May you like
“Or Frank finally pays what he owes.”
