Chapter 8 - The Inheritance

Margaret Hale had been wealthy before Victor Crane ever met her.

Very wealthy.

Her father founded Hale Maritime.

Victor married into influence.

Then absorbed company after company.

According to Sophie, Margaret created a private trust before she died.

“If I had a child,” Sophie said, “the trust transferred to that child.”

“And Lily is your daughter.”

“Yes.”

“What does she inherit?”

Sophie gave me a hollow look.

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Nearly thirty percent of Crane Global.”

Marco whistled softly.

I finally understood.

Victor didn’t just fear a family scandal.

Lily was a threat to his empire.

“If Lily’s real identity becomes public,” Marco said, “the trust becomes enforceable.”

Sophie nodded.

“My father loses control of the company.”

“And if Lily disappears?”

“He keeps everything.”

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Is Lily okay?”

“She’s fine.”

“Stay inside.”

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“There’s something strange.”

I heard Lily in the background.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Vanessa is here.”

I stood.

“What?”

“She came with police.”

Marco grabbed his coat.

We drove back.

Vanessa stood in the living room with two detectives.

Lily hid behind Rachel.

Vanessa didn’t approach her.

Good choice.

Detective Harmon spoke first.

“Mrs. Reed has agreed to cooperate.”

I laughed.

“She’s a little late.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“I can get you to Victor.”

Sophie entered behind me.

Vanessa froze.

“Oh my God.”

Sophie walked forward.

“You.”

Vanessa backed up.

“You’re alive.”

“You sound disappointed.”

“I thought…”

“What did my father tell you?”

“That you were dangerous.”

Sophie laughed.

“To whom?”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Everyone.”

Lily peeked from behind Rachel.

Sophie saw her.

Everything stopped.

She took one step.

Then another.

Lily gripped Rachel’s hand.

Sophie immediately stopped.

She didn’t force it.

Didn’t say I’m your mother.

Didn’t reach.

She simply knelt.

“Hi.”

Lily stared at her.

“Are you Sophie?”

“Yes.”

“My daddy says you’re family.”

Sophie’s lips trembled.

“He’s right.”

Lily studied her face.

“You look like me.”

Sophie smiled through tears.

“You look like somebody I loved very much.”

“Mommy Amelia?”

“Yes.”

Lily thought about that.

Then she slowly walked forward.

She didn’t hug Sophie.

She handed her the torn blue ribbon.

“Vanessa hurt me with this.”

Sophie’s face changed.

She rose.

Vanessa stepped back.

“I’m sorry.”

“You were paid to protect my father’s secret.”

“Yes.”

“And you took it out on her.”

Vanessa cried.

“I was scared.”

Sophie’s voice went cold.

“She’s five.”

Marco stepped between them.

“Not here.”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“There’s more.”

She removed a flash drive from her coat.

“Victor made me keep records.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against him?”

“Against everyone.”

She handed it to me.

“There are calls, payments, names.”

Marco connected it to a laptop.

Folders appeared.

HOSPITAL.

AMELIA.

SOPHIE.

MERCER.

LILY.

Marco opened AMELIA.

An audio file.

Date:

Two days before Amelia’s death.

He pressed play.

Victor Crane’s voice filled the room.

“You were warned, Amelia.”

Then my dead wife answered.

“You touch my daughter, and I destroy you.”

“She is not your daughter.”

“She is now.”

A pause.

Then Victor said:

“You have forty-eight hours to give me the file.”

Amelia answered:

“And if I don’t?”

Victor’s voice became quiet.

“Then Daniel becomes a widower.”

The recording ended.

I couldn’t move.

Sophie covered her mouth.

Marco stared at the screen.

Vanessa whispered:

“There’s another file.”

May you like

She pointed.

“It was recorded the night Amelia died.”
