Chapter 1 - The Ribbon

The first thing I heard was my daughter screaming.
“Daddy!”
I turned just in time to see Vanessa drag Lily across the ballroom by a blue ribbon twisted around the little girl’s wrist.
My champagne glass slipped from my hand.
It shattered against the marble floor.
“LET HER GO!”
Three hundred conversations died at once.
Vanessa froze.
Lily was only five years old.
Her silver party shoes scraped helplessly across the polished floor as Vanessa yanked her toward the hallway.
Tears streaked my daughter’s face.
“Daniel,” Vanessa snapped. “Stay out of this.”
I crossed the room so fast two guests nearly jumped aside.
“What did you just say?”
“She stole something.”
Lily shook her head violently.
“I didn’t! Daddy, I didn’t!”
Vanessa tightened her grip.
Lily cried out.
That was when another man stepped between them.
Marco Stallone.
Sixty-eight years old.
Six foot three.
Gray hair.
Black suit.
And the kind of quiet stare that made people stop talking before he ever raised his voice.
Marco had been my late wife Amelia’s family security adviser for nearly twenty years.
He looked down at Vanessa’s hand.
“Release the child.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is a family matter.”
Marco didn’t move.
“It became my matter when you put your hands on a five-year-old.”
Vanessa finally let go.
Lily ran straight into me.
I dropped to my knees.
Her whole body was shaking.
“Hey. Look at me.”
She buried her face against my chest.
“She hurt me.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“What happened?”
“She went into my bedroom.”
“I was looking for Mommy’s picture,” Lily sobbed.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
“What picture?” I asked.
“Daniel,” Vanessa said quickly, “she’s upset. Don’t encourage this.”
Lily reached inside the front of her dress.
She pulled out something small.
A torn piece of blue satin ribbon.
Vanessa went pale.
Marco noticed.
“So did I.”
Lily whispered, “She used the rest of it.”
My stomach tightened.
“Used it for what?”
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“She tied my door shut last night.”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That is ridiculous.”
Marco blocked her.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa glared at him.
“You have no authority in this house.”
Marco reached into his pocket.
“No.”
He lifted his phone.
“But the camera system does.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
I stared at him.
“What camera system?”
“The old interior security network Amelia installed before she died.”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“I had that disconnected.”
Marco’s eyes stayed on her.
“You thought you did.”
He turned toward me.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“Earlier tonight, Lily asked me to help her find a photograph of her mother.”
Lily lifted her head.
“The one with the man.”
I frowned.
“What man?”
Vanessa suddenly lunged for Lily.
Marco caught her wrist before she reached us.
“Enough.”
Vanessa struggled.
“You don’t know what you’re doing!”
Marco released her slowly.
Then he looked directly at me.
“I found the photograph.”
My heartbeat changed.
“Where?”
“Inside Amelia’s old family album.”
Vanessa whispered, “Marco…”
He ignored her.
“There was an empty slot.”
He reached into his jacket.
“And the photograph had been hidden behind another picture.”
He handed it to me.
My fingers went cold.
Amelia stood beside a fountain.
She looked young.
Maybe twenty-four.
Beside her stood a little girl.
Dark brown hair.
Green eyes.
A tiny dimple in her left cheek.
She looked exactly like Lily.
I stared at the photograph.
Then at my daughter.
Then back at the photograph.
“That’s me,” Lily whispered.
“No,” I said.
It couldn’t be.
Because the date printed at the bottom of the photograph read:
March 14, 2019.
Lily had been born in November of 2020.
Marco pointed toward the background.
Behind Amelia and the little girl stood a tall man in a dark overcoat.
A man I had never seen before.
Vanessa stopped struggling.
Her voice came out barely louder than a breath.
“Burn it.”
I looked up.
“What?”
She stared at the photograph like it was a loaded gun.
“Daniel…”
Her eyes filled with panic.
“Burn that picture right now.”
May you like
And Marco quietly said:
“That man in the background entered this estate the night Lily was born.”
