Chapter 9 - The Box Beneath the Floor

The metal box was smaller than I expected.

It had been sealed inside a protected recess beneath the warehouse office.

A contractor opened the cavity under the engineer's supervision.

Daniel documented every step.

When the box was finally lifted free, I felt as though Thomas were standing beside me.

Inside were three folders.

A small cassette tape.

Several photographs.

And a handwritten letter addressed to me.

I opened the letter first.

Maggie,

If you're reading this, then something has gone wrong.

I wanted to tell you everything, but I was afraid of what Charles might do.

The land was never his to sell.

He forged the transfer documents and moved the proceeds through companies I couldn't trace.

I gathered what proof I could.

If anything happens to me, take this to someone you trust.

And please forgive me for keeping you in the dark.

I stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

Thomas had died of cancer.

For thirty years, I believed he carried no secrets from me.

Now I understood that he had spent part of his final years afraid.

Daniel examined the folders.

They contained original agreements, bank correspondence, and copies of canceled checks.

Some documents appeared to contradict the official records of the dissolved partnership.

The cassette tape was labeled:

CHARLES - NOVEMBER 1994.

We arranged for a specialist to digitize it without damaging the original.

The recording was poor.

There was static.

Background traffic.

Then Thomas's voice.

"You can't keep doing this, Charles."

Another man answered.

"You should have taken the money."

"Those properties belong to the partnership."

"Not anymore."

"You forged my signature."

A long pause.

Then Charles said something that made my blood turn cold.

"Prove it."

The recording continued.

Thomas threatened to expose him.

Charles responded with a warning about our family.

Then the tape ended.

I sat motionless.

Daniel switched off the audio.

"Margaret, this could be significant."

I nodded.

"But we need authentication and a full review of the records," he continued.

"I know."

Evelyn entered the room carrying a newly obtained corporate report.

"There's something you both need to see."

She placed it on the table.

Charles Whitcomb had been involved in several property companies over the years.

One of those companies had recently made substantial payments to a consulting business controlled by Chloe.

The payments began shortly after Julian moved into my mansion.

Daniel examined the report.

"How much?"

"Almost three million dollars."

I stared at the number.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"That's what we need to establish."

Then she turned another page.

"There's more."

The consulting company had recently transferred money into an account connected to Julian's struggling business.

And that account had been used to pay Richard Hale.

The lawyer involved in the questionable trust documents.

The past and present were beginning to fit together.

But the next discovery was worse.

May you like

Evelyn had found correspondence suggesting Charles Whitcomb knew exactly where Thomas's archive had been stored.

And he had instructed Chloe to retrieve it.
