Chapter 11 - The Night the Mansion Went Dark

Julian claimed someone had entered the mansion through a service entrance.
He told police that several boxes of family records were missing.
He also claimed that I had threatened to take everything from him.
Daniel immediately contacted the investigating officer and explained that the documents belonged to me or to entities I controlled.
He provided proof of ownership and asked that all relevant evidence be preserved.
The burglary report complicated matters.
But it also created a problem for Julian.
He had now formally acknowledged that the archive existed.
For months, he and Chloe had denied knowing anything about Thomas's records.
Now Julian had described them in detail.
Evelyn found that interesting.
"People under pressure often try to control the story," she said.
"Sometimes they create a record that contradicts their earlier claims."
I was tired.
Physically.
Emotionally.
And in a way I had never experienced before.
Every discovery felt like losing another piece of my family.
But I refused to stop.
A week later, Daniel received confirmation that the occupancy dispute would proceed through the courts.
Julian could contest it.
He could hire attorneys.
He could argue.
But he could no longer pretend I had no rights.
Meanwhile, the lender froze its review of the suspicious application.
The real estate broker withdrew from the proposed sale.
And Julian's investors began demanding answers.
His carefully constructed image of wealth was collapsing.
Then came the phone call I had been expecting.
"Mom."
Julian's voice sounded exhausted.
"Please don't hang up."
I said nothing.
"I know I hurt you."
I waited.
"I lost control."
Still, I said nothing.
"I'm sorry."
The words hung between us.
For thirty years, I had longed to hear my son accept responsibility.
Now that he finally said the words, they felt strangely incomplete.
"Julian," I asked, "why did you hit me?"
He began crying.
"I don't know."
"That's not an answer."
"I was angry."
"About what?"
"The money."
I closed my eyes.
"What money?"
He hesitated.
"Chloe told me you were going to cut me off."
"Did that give you the right to hurt me?"
"No."
"Then why did you do it?"
His breathing grew uneven.
"Because I thought you'd forgive me."
There it was.
The truth.
Not an excuse.
Not a misunderstanding.
He had hurt me because he believed there would be no consequences.
I wiped away a tear.
"Julian, I love you."
He began sobbing.
"Then please stop this."
"But I will not protect you from what you've done."
His voice changed instantly.
"Mom, you can't abandon me!"
"I am not abandoning you."
"Then help me!"
"Help yourself by telling the truth."
He went silent.

Then he whispered something that made my heart stop.
"Mom, there's something about Dad's death you don't know."
