Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING EVELYN WANTED

The courtroom was smaller than Claire expected.
Evelyn sat at the defense table.
Gray suit.
Pearl earrings.
Perfect posture.
For one dangerous second, she looked like the woman Claire had met five years earlier.
Warm smile.
Homemade pie.
“You must be special if my Ethan loves you.”
Claire almost laughed at the memory.
Evelyn eventually accepted responsibility for multiple offenses connected to the assault, illegal surveillance, evidence staging, and the kidnapping.
Thomas faced his own charges separately.
When Evelyn was allowed to speak, she turned toward Ethan.
Not Claire.
Never Claire.
“I loved you from the moment they put you in my arms.”
Ethan’s face did not change.
“I gave up everything for you.”
His jaw tightened.
“I worked. I sacrificed. I protected this family.”
Claire felt Ethan’s hand close around hers.
Evelyn continued.
“And then she came.”
There it was.
“She convinced you I was dangerous.”
“No,” Ethan said.
His attorney touched his arm.
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“See? You defend her automatically.”
Ethan stood.
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Mercer.”
“Your Honor, may I respond?”
After a pause, the judge allowed it.
Ethan faced his mother.
“You keep saying Claire took me from you.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“She did.”
“No.”
“You stopped calling.”
“Because every call became an interrogation.”
“You stopped visiting.”
“Because you insulted my wife.”
“You moved out.”
“I was thirty-one.”
A few people in the courtroom shifted.
Ethan’s voice became firmer.
“You didn’t lose me when I married Claire.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You lost me when you decided loving you meant obeying you.”
Her face twisted.
“I’m your mother.”
“You are.”
His voice broke.
“And that’s why this hurts.”
Evelyn’s eyes flickered.
“But being my mother doesn’t give you permission to terrorize my family.”
“I would never hurt Lily.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“To protect her!”
“From her mother?”
“Yes!”
Claire stood.
Ethan looked at her.
She released his hand.
“I want to hear the answer.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
Claire faced her.
“Why the nursery?”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
For the first time, her anger disappeared.
What remained was grief.
“I had a daughter.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Evelyn stared at Claire.
“Before Thomas.”
The courtroom became silent.
“Her name was Rose.”
Ethan looked at his attorney.
Then back at his mother.
“She died at seven weeks old.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“I put her down for a nap.”
She swallowed.
“When I came back, she wasn’t breathing.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“They told me sometimes babies die and nobody knows why.”
She looked at Lily, asleep in Claire’s arms.
“When Lily was born, I started dreaming about Rose.”
Claire understood.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding.
“You thought you could do it over.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I could protect this one.”
“No,” Claire said.
Evelyn flinched.
“You didn’t want to protect Lily.”
Claire stepped closer.
“You wanted Lily to make your pain disappear.”
“That’s not true.”
“You needed to be needed.”
“Stop.”
“And when I stood between you and that fantasy, you hated me.”
“Stop.”
“You hurt me beside my daughter’s crib because you couldn’t stand that I was her mother.”
“STOP!”
Evelyn’s scream echoed through the courtroom.
Claire didn’t move.
“That’s why.”
Evelyn stared at her.
And finally, the mask was gone.
The court imposed a substantial prison sentence followed by strict protective conditions.
As deputies approached, Evelyn looked at Ethan one last time.
“You’re choosing her.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
He put one arm around Claire.
“I’m choosing not to become you.”
Evelyn was led away.
The doors closed behind her.
Claire released a breath.
“It’s over.”
Ethan looked toward the closed doors.
“No.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
He looked down at Lily.
“Now we have to learn how to live after it.”
May you like
And that, Ethan would discover, was harder than surviving the night itself.
