Chapter 1 - THE SCREAM

The scream came before Ethan opened the nursery door.
Not a baby’s scream.
Claire’s.
“You will answer for this!”
Ethan froze with one hand on the brass knob.
Then he shoved the door open.
And his entire world broke in front of him.
His mother had both hands tangled in Claire’s hair.
Evelyn Mercer—sixty-one years old, silver-haired, always perfectly dressed, always preaching about “family”—was slamming Claire’s head against the side of the oak crib.
Once.
Twice.
“Mom!”
A third time.
“STOP!”
Their six-week-old daughter, Lily, wailed from beneath a star-patterned quilt, tiny fists punching the air.
Claire tried to cover her face.
“Please—please stop!”
Evelyn yanked her back by the hair.
“You think you can take everything from me?”
Ethan didn’t remember crossing the room.
One second he was at the door.
The next, his shoulder slammed into his mother.
Evelyn flew sideways and crashed into the mahogany wardrobe. A framed picture fell, exploding across the hardwood floor.
Claire dropped to the carpet.
Ethan stepped between them.
“STAY AWAY FROM HER!”
His roar shook the room.
Evelyn stared at him from the floor.
For a moment, she looked shocked.
Then something colder settled into her face.
“You pushed me.”
“You were beating my wife!”
“She was stealing your daughter!”
“What?”
Behind him, Claire was sobbing, one hand pressed against the back of her head.
Ethan turned.
“Claire?”
“I—I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
Evelyn laughed.
It was a terrible sound.
“You don’t?”
“Shut up,” Ethan snapped.
“Oh, she hasn’t told you.”
“Mom, shut your mouth.”
“She was planning to leave you.”
The nursery went strangely quiet except for Lily’s crying.
Ethan slowly looked back at his wife.
Claire’s face went white.
Evelyn saw it.
And smiled.
“There,” she whispered. “Look at her.”
Ethan’s heartbeat thudded against his ribs.
“Claire?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Ethan…”
His mother pushed herself upright.
“Check the hall closet.”
“Don’t move.”
“Check it.”
Ethan hesitated.
Then he grabbed his phone, called 911, and put it on speaker.
“My mother attacked my wife. Send police and an ambulance. Now.”
Evelyn’s smile disappeared.
“You’re calling the police on your own mother?”
“I’m calling the police on the woman who just put her hands on my wife.”
“I raised you.”
“And she trusted me to protect her.”
Claire started crying harder.
Ethan picked up Lily and placed the screaming infant against his chest.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered.
But his own hands were shaking.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Evelyn stared at Claire with such hatred that Ethan instinctively moved closer to his wife.
“You think this is over?” Evelyn said.
“Don’t talk to her.”
“You have no idea who you married.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Enough.”
Evelyn pointed toward the hallway.
“Ask your precious wife why there’s a suitcase in the closet.”
Claire whispered, “Ethan…”
He looked at her.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not fear of Evelyn.
Fear of him finding something.
Ethan stepped into the hallway and opened the closet.
Behind two winter coats sat a large gray duffel bag.
Packed.
Women’s clothing.
Diapers.
Baby bottles.
Cash.
Lily’s birth certificate.
And two one-way bus tickets.
Ethan stopped breathing.
One ticket had Claire’s name on it.
The other simply said:
INFANT.
Behind him, Evelyn whispered:
“Go ahead, son.”
A thin smile returned to her bloody lip.
May you like
“Ask your wife where she was taking your daughter.”
