Chapter 15 - MARGARET'S SECRET

Margaret refused to leave her house.

Police wanted to move her.

Richard begged her to move.

She sat in Jonathan’s old chair and shook her head.

“I have spent fifty years running from what happened.”

“No more.”

Richard stared at his mother.

“What do you know?”

Margaret looked at Elena.

“More than I told anyone.”

Lily slept upstairs under guard.

Elena sat beside Richard.

Brooks switched on a recorder.

Margaret began.

“When Richard was two, he became very ill.”

“Fevers.”

“Rashes.”

“Nothing worked.”

“Stephen Mercer told us there was a new treatment.”

Richard felt cold.

“My father agreed?”

“No.”

Margaret looked down.

“I did.”

Richard stared.

“You?”

“I signed the papers.”

“Jonathan opposed it.”

“But you were getting worse.”

“I was afraid.”

Her voice broke.

“Parents do terrible things when fear convinces them it is love.”

Richard thought about Daniel.

Victoria.

Jonathan.

A family built from terrible choices made in the name of protection.

Margaret continued.

“The treatment seemed to help you.”

“Then Daniel got sick.”

“We enrolled him too.”

“Did it hurt him?”

“I don’t know.”

“The doctors said no.”

Richard placed Daniel’s file before her.

Margaret read the note about aggression.

Her hands began shaking.

“Oh God.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“I swear.”

“Then what did you know?”

“Years later Jonathan learned Mercer and Calder had continued trials on other children.”

“He shut them down.”

“But?”

“But Calder had records proving we enrolled you.”

“He threatened to say Jonathan financed human experiments on his own children.”

“So Dad stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

“Nora found out.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Daniel killed her?”

Margaret began crying.

“Not that night.”

“When?”

“The next morning.”

Richard stood.

“You knew for thirty-one years?”

Margaret nodded.

Richard turned away.

Elena watched him carefully.

Margaret continued.

“Jonathan came home covered in dirt.”

“He told me Daniel had made a terrible mistake.”

“You helped?”

“No.”

“I begged him to call police.”

“He refused.”

“He said prison would destroy Daniel.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“So instead Daniel destroyed everyone else.”

Margaret lowered her head.

“Yes.”

Richard wanted to shout.

Instead he asked, “Calder?”

“Jonathan called him.”

“Why?”

“Because Calder already knew.”

Richard looked at her.

“Because he sent Daniel.”

Margaret nodded.

Richard paced.

“All of you knew pieces.”

“No one told the whole truth.”

“And Elena paid for it.”

Margaret looked at Elena.

“I am sorry.”

Elena’s expression remained unreadable.

“You believed I abandoned Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You encouraged Richard to move on.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You welcomed Victoria.”

“Yes.”

Elena stood.

For a moment Richard thought she would leave.

Instead she walked toward Margaret.

“I spent two years imagining what I would do if I got out.”

Margaret looked up.

“I imagined screaming.”

“Breaking things.”

“Hurting the people who did this.”

Elena’s voice stayed calm.

“But right now I only want one thing.”

“What?”

“I want all of you to stop protecting people from consequences.”

Margaret began crying harder.

Elena continued.

“Daniel.”

“Victoria.”

“Jonathan.”

“You.”

“Richard.”

“Me.”

“No more secrets because truth might hurt someone.”

Richard looked at his wife.

She had changed underground.

Not become colder.

Clearer.

Brooks’s radio sounded.

An officer at the rear entrance reported movement.

Everyone became alert.

The lights went out.

Richard cursed.

Backup power activated.

A gunshot shattered a window.

Officers returned fire.

Lily screamed upstairs.

Elena ran.

Richard followed.

They reached Lily’s room.

An officer guarded the door.

“She’s safe.”

Richard held his daughter.

Another shot sounded below.

Then silence.

Brooks shouted from the hallway.

“Calder is inside!”

Richard handed Lily to Elena.

“No.”

Elena said.

“We stay together.”

They moved toward the secure stairwell.

A shadow appeared below.

Thomas Calder.

He held Margaret by the arm.

A pistol pressed beneath her jaw.

“Richard.”

He looked exhausted now.

Desperate.

“Send Elena down.”

“No.”

Calder smiled faintly.

“Then your mother dies.”

Margaret looked up the stairs.

“Don’t.”

Calder tightened his grip.

“You have cost me everything.”

Richard stared at him.

“You did that yourself.”

“I built your family.”

“You poisoned it.”

“I protected your father.”

“You blackmailed him.”

“I protected Daniel.”

“You created him.”

Daniel’s voice came from behind Calder.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped from the lower hallway.

He wore a tracking bracelet and had two officers behind him.

Brooks had arranged his presence for identification.

Calder turned.

Daniel looked at him.

“You did not create me.”

Calder smiled.

“I shaped you.”

“You lied to me.”

“You were useful.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“At seventeen?”

“You were old enough.”

Something inside Daniel changed.

Calder saw it too late.

Margaret drove her heel down on his foot.

Daniel lunged.

Calder fired.

Daniel jerked backward.

Richard shouted.

Officers opened fire.

Calder fell.

Margaret dropped.

Elena covered Lily’s eyes.

Richard ran downstairs.

Daniel lay on the floor.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Daniel.”

Richard pressed both hands over the wound.

His brother looked at him.

“Did he get Mom?”

“No.”

Daniel smiled weakly.

“Good.”

“Stay with me.”

“I’m tired.”

“No.”

Richard pressed harder.

“You don’t get to escape this.”

Daniel laughed painfully.

“Still bossy.”

“You are going to court.”

“You’re going to tell the truth.”

“You’re going to look Elena in the eye.”

“And you’re going to live long enough to hate every second of it.”

Daniel’s eyes closed.

Paramedics rushed forward.

Richard moved back.

Calder was still breathing.

Brooks cuffed him while medics treated his wound.

For the first time in thirty-one years, Thomas Calder was not controlling the story.

He was just another man bleeding on a floor.

Then Margaret made a sound.

Richard turned.

She held a small key Calder had dropped.

“What is that?”

Margaret stared at it.

“I know this key.”

“From where?”

“Jonathan gave it to Calder the night Nora died.”

Richard’s face changed.

“What does it open?”

Margaret whispered, “The room beneath the room.”

Elena stared.

“There’s another room?”

May you like

Margaret nodded.

“And Jonathan told me if anyone ever opened it, the Hale name would never survive.”
