Chapter 1 - THE HATCH BENEATH THE FLOOR

“Mommy, hold on, I’m opening it right now!”

Lily Hale dropped to both knees on the polished oak floor and jammed the brass fireplace poker beneath the iron ring.

The wooden hatch shuddered.

Behind her, Victoria Crane went white.

“Step away from that hatch immediately, you foolish girl!”

Lily looked over her shoulder.

For almost two years, Victoria had spoken to her in that cold, patient voice whenever Lily asked questions about her mother.

Mommy left because she was unhappy.

Mommy did not want to come home.

Mommy chose another life.

Daddy was hurting too, so Lily needed to stop asking.

But the voice Lily had heard beneath the floor ten minutes earlier had not sounded like a ghost.

It had sounded weak.

Terrified.

And unmistakably familiar.

“No!”

Lily pulled harder.

“My real mother is trapped down there!”

Victoria lunged toward her.

“Silence!”

Her expensive cream dress caught against the corner of the coffee table.

“You are ruining everything I built!”

That was when Richard Hale stepped through the study doorway.

He had been downstairs speaking to guests who had gathered for Lily’s eighth birthday dinner.

He still held a half-empty glass of sparkling water.

“What is going on over here, Victoria?”

Victoria froze.

Lily did not.

She yanked the poker upward with both hands.

The hatch lifted three inches.

A smell rolled into the room.

Damp earth.

Metal.

Mold.

And something medicinal.

Lily coughed.

Then she heard it.

A woman crying.

“Lily?”

The poker fell from Lily’s hands.

Her face crumpled.

“Daddy!”

Richard crossed the room.

“Look inside!”

Lily pointed at the black opening.

“Mommy is down in the floor!”

Richard stared at her.

For one second, nothing moved.

Then he grabbed the iron ring and ripped the hatch upward.

A narrow staircase disappeared beneath the house.

A single bare bulb flickered somewhere below.

Richard took one step down.

Then another.

“Hello?”

There was a scraping sound.

A whisper followed.

“Richard?”

His heart stopped.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it in dreams.

He had heard it in old videos.

He had heard it in the final voicemail Elena had supposedly left two years earlier before disappearing.

Richard descended so quickly that he nearly fell.

At the bottom was a narrow concrete chamber.

A rusted cot stood against one wall.

Plastic water bottles were piled beneath a shelf.

A bucket sat in the corner.

There were food wrappers.

Medicine bottles.

A thin gray blanket.

And on the floor beside the cot was a woman.

Her hair, once dark and shining, hung in tangled strands to her shoulders.

Her face was painfully thin.

Bruises marked both wrists.

One ankle was attached to a chain bolted into the concrete.

Richard stopped breathing.

“Elena?”

She lifted her head.

Her eyes found his.

For the first time in two years, Richard Hale looked at his wife.

“Elena?”

Her cracked lips trembled.

“Richard.”

He dropped beside her.

“How on earth is this possible?”

Upstairs, Victoria backed toward the doorway.

Lily saw her move.

“Daddy!”

Richard looked up.

Lily pointed.

“Victoria’s leaving!”

Richard raced upstairs.

Victoria was already halfway across the hall.

“Victoria!”

She stopped.

Richard had never shouted her name like that.

The birthday guests downstairs fell silent.

Victoria slowly turned.

“Richard, please listen to me.”

He positioned himself between her and Lily.

“Get away from my daughter right now.”

“It was not my fault.”

Victoria lifted both hands.

“You have to believe me.”

Behind Richard came a weak voice.

“Don’t.”

Elena had managed to reach the stairs.

Richard rushed back and caught her before her knees gave out.

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!”

She ran forward.

Elena dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

For several seconds, Elena made no sound at all.

Then her entire body began shaking.

Lily pressed her face into her mother’s shoulder.

“I knew you didn’t leave me.”

Elena squeezed her eyes shut.

“I would never leave you.”

Richard looked at Victoria.

“You locked my wife beneath this house for two years?”

“No!”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“No, wait!”

Richard pulled out his phone.

Victoria saw him dial 911.

Her expression changed.

She ran.

One of the guests stepped into the hallway.

Victoria shoved past him.

Richard followed her toward the front door.

Before she could reach it, the security guard Richard had hired for the party blocked her path.

Victoria spun around.

“Richard, you don’t understand what happened!”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t.”

She looked toward Elena.

“You tell him.”

Elena’s face changed.

Fear replaced exhaustion.

Richard noticed.

“Elena?”

She clutched Lily tighter.

Victoria gave a desperate laugh.

“Go ahead.”

Her eyes filled with something almost triumphant.

“Tell him why you’re still alive.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Elena stared at Victoria.

Then she whispered something Richard barely heard.

“She wasn’t alone.”

Richard crouched beside her.

“What?”

Elena looked toward the open hatch.

Her eyes widened.

“There was someone else.”

“Who?”

“I never saw his face.”

Footsteps thundered outside as officers entered the house.

Elena caught Richard’s wrist.

Her fingers were ice cold.

“But I heard him tonight.”

Richard felt the hair rise on his arms.

“Tonight?”

Elena nodded.

“He came downstairs after Victoria left.”

Richard looked toward the black opening beneath the study floor.

“You mean someone was down there today?”

Elena’s lips trembled.

“Yes.”

Richard glanced at the officers spreading through the house.

May you like

Then Elena whispered the words that turned the birthday party into a lockdown.

“He’s still here.”
