Chapter 18 - THE LAST QUESTION

When Lily was twelve, she asked to visit Claire.
Ethan said no.
Then asked why.
That was progress.
“I want to see her.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“That worries me.”
“It worries me too.”
They discussed it with Lily’s therapist.
Then the victim advocate.
Then the prison.
Eventually, a supervised restorative meeting was approved.
Claire would sit behind secure glass.
No physical contact.
Lily could leave whenever she wanted.
Ethan accompanied her but agreed to sit several feet back.
On the morning of the visit, Lily wore jeans, sneakers, and a blue jacket.
She brought her wheelchair.
Her crutches were clipped to the back.
Claire entered the room.
She looked older.
Gray showed in her hair.
Her face had lost the polished certainty Ethan remembered.
Lily picked up the phone.
Claire did the same.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Finally Claire said, “Hi.”
“Hi.”
Claire looked at her chair.
Then the crutches.
“How are you?”
“Good.”
“I heard you’re doing well.”
Lily’s face hardened.
“From who?”
“My attorney sometimes receives public updates.”
“Oh.”
Silence.
Claire began crying.
Lily watched without reacting.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Claire seemed surprised.
“I got your letters.”
“You never answered.”
“I didn’t want to.”
“That’s okay.”
Lily shifted.
“I came because I have one question.”
Claire nodded.
“Anything.”
“When I stood in the driveway…”
Claire closed her eyes.
Lily continued.
“You looked scared.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Claire took a long breath.
“Because I knew it was over.”
“The money?”
“Everything.”
“What everything?”
“My life with you.”
Lily frowned.
“You could have told Dad I was getting better.”
“I know.”
“You could have stopped stealing.”
“Yes.”
“You could have gone to police about Mom.”
“Yes.”
“You could have done all that before the driveway.”
“Yes.”
“So why were you scared?”
Claire looked at her through the glass.
“Because until that moment, I still believed I could control what everyone knew.”
Lily became still.
“And when you stood in front of Ethan, I understood I couldn’t.”
There it was.
The answer Lily had spent years trying to understand.
Not love.
Not recovery.
Not money alone.
Control.
Claire feared Lily standing because Lily’s body told the truth without Claire’s permission.
Lily nodded.
“That’s all.”
Claire panicked.
“Wait.”
Lily stopped.
“I know you don’t owe me anything.”
Claire’s voice shook.
“But I need you to know…”
Lily waited.
“You were never weak.”
Lily’s expression changed.
Then she said the words Ethan would remember for the rest of his life.
“I know.”
She put down the phone.
Claire touched the glass.
Lily turned away.
She did not stand dramatically.
She did not walk out to prove anything.
She rolled through the door in her wheelchair.
Because she no longer needed Claire to witness her strength.
Outside the prison, Ethan asked, “How do you feel?”
“Hungry.”
He laughed.
“Seriously?”
“I skipped breakfast.”
“Why?”
“Nervous.”
“What do you want?”
“Tacos.”
They ate tacos.
May you like
Lily never visited Claire again.
